Spore rated PG by BBFC for 'little buggers' reference photo

The British Board of Film Classification have thoroughly laid down the law on Will Wright’s upcoming game of creature modification and evolution, Spore. The BBFC, which also rates some videogames, have decided that the ostensibly mild violence and the reference of a small alien species as “little buggers” is enough to warrant a PG rating. The rating means that there is a possibility that the game could “disturb” any child under eight-years-old. As to the reference, here is the BBFC’s comment on the matter.

…the language in the game comes late on, as the creatures and organisms at the beginning have no method of communication. Once players get to the space level, a group of aliens are referred to as ‘little buggers’ by a character training the player to fly a spaceship.

Of course, violence also plays a part in Spore. According to the BBFC, the violence shown in the game is presented as a “brief flash of red and a few spots of ‘meat’ which the organism must swim over to eat and grow.” After reading about the disgusting amount of gore in the game, I had to stop and take a deep breath. I am afraid I can no longer report on this decidedly nasty and terrible title. I can only hope that children never get their hands on Spore. Humanity’s future could very well be compromised if developers continue to spew out this filth into our culture. What’s next Mr. Wright? Are you going to include longer claws and teeth?

"That will be £5000 for finding one instance of the word "bugger", just thank god you've only got one language in there or it'd be double that

PG means nothing. It's 'Parental Guidance' but who ever experienced a difference between a U and a PG while growing up???

'Bugger' is another word for 'fuck' though.

PG seems about right; very mild violence and a demi-swear word. PG isn't exactly an 18 rating, it just means parents should be at hand, which makes sense.

Ok, I looked up the actual rating and parents dont need to be there, but they "are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children."

I guess this is to prevent a sensitive 5 year old seeing spore creatures fight to the death and eat each other whilst sat on his own. The BBFC even said "the whole effect is rather comic and the fact that the participants are clearly fantastical animals means there is very little impact."

But, to get a U rating the game would have to have "occasional mild threat or menace only". So no violence at all.

Horrors, such language! If children play this they may go around calling each other little buggers and then what, will they sink so low as to call each other rapscallions and scalawags? Won't somebody think of the children?

That's awesome. It sounds like the bugger reference is straight out of Ender's Game. They're even training some kind to fight against them with space ships. I wonder if this is a blatant rip-off of the sci-fi classic, or if it is simply fan service. Either way, it's pretty cool.

12A made PG even weaker Wardrox. A child of... errrm.... 3 can watch Batman if they are with an adult nowadays.

Yeah, PG are the films parents give their kids to watch on their own and the kids think "woah, I'm hardcore on my own with a PG", while the mum is in the garden smoking a joint and staring at the neighbours hose.

What!?

Does "bugger" mean something in England that it doesn't mean here?

I would be disturbed by Buggers too. They would have killed us all if Ender didn't stop them.

UK slang "Buggery" means getting sodomised.
The word "Bugger" however has mutated over the years to mean almost nothing at all. "Oh Bugger, me teas gone cold" etc.
The word "Bugger" has almost no rude connotations but "Buggery" still has and "Getting Buggered" Still definitly means getting buttfkd.

So yeah, its a very mild swear word, linked to bigger swear words and arse-sex.

Wait... So it's like watching a wildlife program... and that means Parents must be with the child whilst they play it?!

Well done BBC! You're definitely the professional, non-couple-of-blokes, game-understanders you accused PEGI of not being!

*cough* BBFC is the rating board, BBC is the TV/Radio broadcaster.
