The British Board of Film Classification have thoroughly laid down the law on Will Wright’s upcoming game of creature modification and evolution, Spore. The BBFC, which also rates some videogames, have decided that the ostensibly mild violence and the reference of a small alien species as “little buggers” is enough to warrant a PG rating. The rating means that there is a possibility that the game could “disturb” any child under eight-years-old. As to the reference, here is the BBFC’s comment on the matter.
…the language in the game comes late on, as the creatures and organisms at the beginning have no method of communication. Once players get to the space level, a group of aliens are referred to as ‘little buggers’ by a character training the player to fly a spaceship.
Of course, violence also plays a part in Spore. According to the BBFC, the violence shown in the game is presented as a “brief flash of red and a few spots of ‘meat’ which the organism must swim over to eat and grow.” After reading about the disgusting amount of gore in the game, I had to stop and take a deep breath. I am afraid I can no longer report on this decidedly nasty and terrible title. I can only hope that children never get their hands on Spore. Humanity’s future could very well be compromised if developers continue to spew out this filth into our culture. What’s next Mr. Wright? Are you going to include longer claws and teeth?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
'Bugger' is another word for 'fuck' though.
BBBUUUGGGEEEERRRRRRR!?!?!?!?!!?
I guess this is to prevent a sensitive 5 year old seeing spore creatures fight to the death and eat each other whilst sat on his own. The BBFC even said "the whole effect is rather comic and the fact that the participants are clearly fantastical animals means there is very little impact."
But, to get a U rating the game would have to have "occasional mild threat or menace only". So no violence at all.
Yeah, PG are the films parents give their kids to watch on their own and the kids think "woah, I'm hardcore on my own with a PG", while the mum is in the garden smoking a joint and staring at the neighbours hose.
What!?
The word "Bugger" however has mutated over the years to mean almost nothing at all. "Oh Bugger, me teas gone cold" etc.
The word "Bugger" has almost no rude connotations but "Buggery" still has and "Getting Buggered" Still definitly means getting buttfkd.
So yeah, its a very mild swear word, linked to bigger swear words and arse-sex.
Well done BBC! You're definitely the professional, non-couple-of-blokes, game-understanders you accused PEGI of not being!
