Spore is getting pirated like crazy: Karma at work? photo

I don't usually find piracy easy to justify, but considering that EA has been pig-headed to the extreme over the use of SecuROM in its products -- a measure deemed harmful to the enjoyment of the paying consumer -- it's kind of karmic to learn that Spore's piracy levels have been deemed "extraordinary" by by one peer-to-peer research firm.

Spore has been at the center of a big DRM controversy, as its piracy-protection program generated a huge user backlash on Amazon. We also learned that EA's "draconian" level of control limits people to creating only one account per copy of the game. People are understandably angry and upset at Electronic Arts for exerting this kind of dictatorial power over its customers, and it looks like they are doing what they can to punish the publisher.

"The numbers are extraordinary," exclaimed Eric Garland, boss of P2P researcher Big Champagne. "This is a very high level of torrent activity even for an immensely popular game title."

The game has been downloaded 171,402 times since September 1, and users such as "deathkitten" on The Pirate Bay are urging users to add to that figure, claiming that it's "the right thing," to do. The right thing it may not entirely be, but EA was kind of asking for it. If you punish your paying customers by using detrimental DRM, something like this is bound to happen. It also proves that SecuROM doesn't bloody work, either.

I'm seeing a small detail that the defenders of EA are missing: If I bought this game and decided that I selfishly wanted to play it first, then unselfishly decided that my sister could play it too, she is totally screwed because of EA's crap DRM.

That's all irrelevant though because my computer can't run Spore, but the point still stands.

Now I wonder how many of those 141,000+ people are like me and just going to pirate the game to make a statement. Probably a lot.

"C'mon people, seed!"

now the hit n runners. they're the ones with no morals. P2P should be all about caring and sharing in a free (digital) world.

can't you people see that piracy promotes loving each other and potentially prevents war?

What I feel bad about is that an otherwise half-way decent game is getting dragged through the mud due almost solely to tacked on malware that doesn't accomplish what it what it was meant to accomplish. Assuming, of course, that EA is using the DRM to combat piracy and not for some of the other, more sinister reasons that have been bandied about.

I'm eagerly waiting for the real backlash to come when EA pulls this exact same shit with Red Alert 3 and The Sims 3.

Secretly I'm afraid that I could be the Francis Drake kind of pirate. The kind that sinks the Spanish armada right after his torrent is finished.

There's no winning here. If you buy the game, EA thinks "Hey, people accept this shit!". If you pirate the game, EA thinks "Hey, this shit is NECESSARY!". If you don't download or pirate, EA thinks "PC Gaming is dead!".
I'm doubtful EA will ever learn the lesson that DRM caused this piracy, and their DRM was useless because the game was leaked and cracked and playable a week before the actual street release.

In conclusion, FUCK YOU EA.

I feel bad for Will Wright and the rest of Maxis. EA fucked them over big time.

i sympathize for will because he'so cool game on his hands and while i'm not big on gaming piracy i can't say i'm ready to discourage piracy in this particular instance.

On the other hand, I suppose that they could just consider themselves fortunate that EA even deigns to allow Maxis to continue to exist, such as it is.

(insert angry rant about Westwood, Origin, Bullfrog, etc. here)

I will most certainly be pirating this. I was going to buy it but as it turns out its now $60 for a rental or own it for free.

EA should rename to FAIL INC.

1) Karma doesn't exist and is a maddeningly stupid concept.

2) Whether or not you pirate this game, you should at least recognize that the REASON this annoying DRM exists is because people pirate games. So go ahead, and they'll just come up with more annoying DRM. And yeah, you'll just say that "well, I'll download the next game, too". Which is fine and dandy, until companies just say "fuck the PC" and stop messing with it altogether. And then you'll all bitch that your favorite platform is dead.

I don't mind the piracy, hell, I've done it. But don't bitch and whine when companies attempt to step their game up from doing shit that, let's face it, you shouldn't be doing.

There is no justification for piracy. You didn't want to shell out the money + it's easy to torrent it = everyone's real motivation to download it.

If you really want to flip the bird to DRM, don't touch DRM-infected products with a ten-foot pole! That includes pirated copies!

Yes, how silly...game companies want to make money for the products that THEY spent time, money and resources on!

Crazy!

I under stand that companies want to make money. What I don't understand is why they are punishing the people that bought it and rewarding the pirates.

It's like I buy a burger and get punched in the face while the guy robbing it gets a handy.

Also when I buy something I kinda like to, ya know, OWN it. As it stands now all your doing is renting it.

My god, its a whole new type of merchandise. After 5 washes your pants dissapear and you have to buy new ones. 50K miles and your car stops dead so you buy a new one. Watch your fav movie 5 times then buy a new copy. Even better the company that makes your chair goes under so no more sitting in it for you. The shirt your wearing has been discontinued so you can't ever wear it again. Awww your remote stopped working. Time for a new TV.

Yeah all that was crazy but what they did with Spore makes perfect sense.

Anyone know where I can get a used parrot that won't die after 5 "Polly want a cracker."?

zeronil-

Most of your examples are pretty bad, as pants do get holes in them and cars do stop dead. But whatever.

The idea that you're "renting" the game because the biggest software publisher in the world may suddenly go under and stop supporting Spore is so ridiculous. EA has been around for how long? By the time EA would disappear, Spore would be a distant memory.

@akathatoneguy: His examples aren't bad. what he is getting at is what if that happened after wearing them a number of times set by the manufacturer.

It isn't a case of them going out of business, it is more about them deciding not to support the game further once a sequel comes out, something they already do by axing the servers of many of their games with online play.

@ Timmeh-

His examples are bad. There is a clear difference between an item such as a pair of pants, which requires no further maintenance from Levis (or whoever) after they are made to continue performing their function, and a game which requires servers for continued function. It's not as if EA hides the fact that they axe the servers of old games. If you don't like it, don't buy it, but that doesn't justify piracy. I don't just steal shit from Wal-Mart if I don't agree with the price, or if I think the product is shitty in some way.

Hey, download shit all you want, but please spare us the lame justifications.

Why do people keep insisting that it's only the pirates complaining? The pirates would only complain if they couldn't play the game, but since the DRM was useless, the game is less of a hassle when pirated than when legally bought. THAT'S THE MAIN PROBLEM. Pirates don't have ANYTHING to complain about.

They should just lower the price(by 50% or more), put adds in loading screens or something like that.
There ya go.

We get the games cheap and they actually make Money.

However Internet connections are needed...and im not a fan for adds... i think its fair though.

DRM sucks ballz xD.
Their strategy is just totall nonsense.
