Spore Galactic Edition announced photo

Due to the worrying level of DRM included in the PC version of Mass Effect, one can’t help but be nervous over the upcoming Maxis-developed game Spore, which is also being published by ... *umphf* ... What? That’s weird, I seem to have blacked out there for a few minutes. Hey, where’d this mysterious, shiny box on my desk come from? It appears to be a copy of Spore, but the packaging is noticeably different. I wonder what special secrets could be hidden in this edition of the game. Let’s crack it open and find out.

  • 'Making of Spore' DVD video
  • 'How to Build a Better Being' DVD video, by National Geographic Channel
  • 'The Art of Spore' hardback mini-book
  • Fold-out Spore poster
  • Premium 100-page Galactic Handbook
While none of these items appear to be truly noteworthy, they have nonetheless distracted me from whatever negative line of thinking I was originally engaged in, along with camouflaging the additional $30 in the price tag.

Aside from getting the box, it also seems that at some point in the last five minutes I preordered five additional copies, bought two more copies of the Spore Creature Creator, and designed seventeen new creatures to join the 1,000,000-plus on Sporepedia. For some reason I also have a business card from John Riccitiello in my pocket, along with some stitches in my head that weren’t there before. Hmmmmmm.

As I said in the Clog about this very issue, I won't be buying this either, because of the DRM issue. I will not pay $60 for a game that I can install only 3 times, as I have often had to wipe my computer for various reasons, or even get a bad patch from the Publisher itself and have to reinstall the game to get it to work.

And I will DEFINITELY not be paying $90 to rent a a game either.

Off that rant and onto another one.....That "special edition" stuff is really lame actually. If I WOULD buy this game, I would just be buying the normal edition.....but I won't cause of the DRM. (And we are back to the original rant)

When they throw out the DRM like they did with Bioshock, I'll get it...

I have to say, I've seen quite a lot of crazy janx on here... just search anything and it comes up with something genius.

$30, wow, thats a lot extra for a special edition isn't it??

I guess they need to cover all the R&D it took to come up with 'limit the installs'. Cutting edge DRM right there.

more then i hate the 3 time install is the constant need to be connected to online. with a true online game i can understand this. even with playing half-life 2 i can give it some slack because it only needs to be online once. but this? THIS? you do stupid things, i don't care how wonderful your game is, you don't get my money.

You know, the fact that a simple resolution change caused the Spore Creature Creator to reliably crash on the splash screen everytime I ran it but was miraculously fixed by a uninstall/reinstall of the application makes me EXTREMELY concerned about the DRM. If the game is anything like the creature creator, this whole coded for Mac and PC thing is going to be a problem. (I love Unix flavors, but the game is weirdly unstable with my graphics card for some reason and that's the only thing I can think of.)

Wait... what, your running it on Unix and a certain reolution caused a reliabe crash. Well you could ofc just not use that resolution. It is a Demo after all and as such is alpha or beta code. This was developed on PCs for PCs.

But yea that DRM sucks satan's hairy balls.

I'll hardly give my money for the stupid DRM issues, I'm not even touching a special edition under these conditions, no matter how much I want it!
