Spore. DS. Confirmed. photo

You loyal readers may think I hate Nintendo, but you're wrong. Know why? Because I LOVE my DS. So when I saw this, the happy dust in my brain exploded all over the that empty organ. According to an EA conference call, Spore is coming to the DS. Yes, you read that right: Spore will be on your DS. If you still needed an excuse to buy this awesome handheld, then you just got your perfect reason.

That's not all that was revealed during this call. Check this out:

“We have shifted and acquired resources and are attacking these successful platforms,” said EA CFO Warren Jenson, referring to Nintendo’s platforms.

My Sims will be coming to both the DS and the Wii, and SimCity will also be coming to the DS.

I don't need an excuse to get one, I need a store to have one.

Hmm interesting I wonder how this is going work. Hopefully it will have the whole download random creatures feature like its PC brother.

*debates whether to go off on another rant*

Spore will rule the world...
Ever since it was announced at GDC all those years ago I have waited and waited and waited some more...

God I hope it kicks as much ass as I think it will

I'm very much excited, especially since I don't have a computer that will run Spore.

When I checked out the link to Next-Gen, I had this staring at me.

This is wrong, it should say "I Fucking Get It. Fuck."

Haha, that's awesome twisted.

BTW, if Spore came to the Wii ... well fuck, that'd be a fuckin' system seller if I ever saw one -- especially if it had online functions.

This is awesome news, I sure as hell hope it comes to the Wii as well. Spore on the ds hopefully will be excellent.

In my magical dream world every version of Spore would be compatible with each other, your creatures would procedurally upgrade or downgrade depending on the system. PC, Wii, DS, PS3, PSP, and 360 players all contributing to the same shared universe. That would be incredible.

For sure I will be getting this for my DS, the only thing I wonder is how it can possibly handle the graphics. I mean, I know Spore is supposed to be deceptively easy on your system, but I've yet to see anything on the DS come even remotely close to Spore. Anyway, as long as all the gameplay mechanics are there, I'm sold. I'm just afraid it's going to look like shit.

I'm with you Mxyzptlk. If it had a crossplatform online system, Spore would be the biggest thing since sliced bread.

My excitement for Spore has waned in the decade since I first heard about it. Even so, this might be the push I need to finally get a DS and completely hand my life over to slackerish tendencies.

Spore. DS. I don't really care, seeing as I don't have a DS and I think Spore is awesome yet severly overrated.

Can the DS version come pre-packaged with the PC version so I don't have to buy it twice...please?

I'm trying to not get too excited about spore. I remember how hyped I was about black & white back in the day. That was so hiddeously disapointing, I couldn't bring myself to be bothered getting past the second level. Spore seems like the same kind of animal. I really hope it'll be good, but I'm not throwing all my chips in just yet.

That said, 'tis indeed awesome news it's coming do DS. Think I'll still need the PC version, because it just will have better functionality(nintendo look like they're sticking with friend codes = gimped online). If the game is as awesome as it has potential to be, mayhaps I'll pick up the DS one as well.

Why would you people pick up two versions of the same damn game? This makes no sense to me.

I thought the Spore dude said months and months ago that the game would be on pretty much every current platform? I'm not really sure that this is news... Don't get me wrong, Spore looks like teh r0xx0r zomg, but I think this was already public knowledge?

Then again, I'm usually wrong. Spore ftw.

He alluded to it, but this is official confirmation. This is flippin' SW33T. Especially since I probably don't have a good enough computer to run it. I wonder how stripped down it'll be on the DS though...

@deanhatescoffee:

It's been strongly hinted that the game would be coming to every platform, but this is the first time there's been official confirmation on a version other than PC.

Wow, this is such a surprising tidbit of news. Who knew that EA would port one of their games to the highest selling handheld?

Next: Spore Mobile. For real. Like, everyone has a cell phone!

The graphics can be poor, the gameplay and the evolutionary options that have to be great.

Spore is going to be whored out to every system ever created. I wouldn't doubt if there is a mobile phone version, and a GBA version.

I'll stick with the PC version, that way I KNOW I'll get assaulted with other creatures.

Besides, I'm not sure the DS is up to procedural texturing and all that jazz.
Im OK's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/02/2007 02:47

If Spore were only coming out for the DS, it would likely be what convinced me to finally buy a DS (I keep meaning to do so, but I still haven't gotten around to it yet), but since it's not... meh. I'll be getting the PC version, and a DS version feels like it can't help but be a watered down port of that. Then again, if it's not a watered down port, and they actually somehow manage to get the full game onto the DS, then that would be uber-hardcore.

From an IGN interview back in August:

"IGN: Can we confirm you plan to eventually bring Spore to other consoles?

Will Wright: Well, we're focusing solely on the PC version at the moment. But we're thinking of Spore as a franchise, definitely, that will be across all platforms. Cellphones, too."

Here's another good interview with Wright from August on Gamespot.

Cool. Let's hope it pushes the tech limits of the DS and isn't a horrible port a la Lego Star Wars.
