Spore customers lash out at DRM, sabotage Amazon score photo

Customers feeling burned by the anti-piracy measures in the long-awaited PC game Spore have decided to take out their frustrations on Amazon, utilizing the review feature to tear the game to shreds for its "draconian" DRM and "dumbed down" gameplay.

Spore's DRM has been accused of eating up too much RAM, causing slowdown. Consumers are also outraged that they can only install the game three times before having to deal with EA's customer support. One reviewer called Spore a rental, pointing out that EA had total control over the title's use:

EA, of course, is not obligated to grant you that extra activation or even provide that service. In a couple of years they might very well even shut down the general activation servers, because "it's not financially feasible" to keep them running. What you will be left with is a nice, colorful $50 coaster. And you will be required to pay for another copy/license if you want to continue playing.

This basically means that you are actually RENTING the game, instead of owning it. The game WILL stop to function in the future. That's inevitable, because even if EA keeps the activation servers going, there IS going to be a time when EA will simply cease to exist because of financial issues or federal laws (like most business eventually do).

At the time of writing, Spore has an average Amazon review score of 1.5 out of 5. Of the forty people who reviewed it, thirty-three have given it one star, compared to the two who gave it five. Those five-star reviews, for reference, were posted in 2006 before the game was even out. Looks like Electronic Arts has a revolt on its hands, and not even Will Wright's charming little face can smooth this one over.

This is exactly what I said about Mass Effect's DRM. It's an attempt by EA to establish precedent to justify further attempts to "rentalize" game purchases. Face it: Spore and Mass Effect are so hyped up that they'll sell like gangbusters in spite of their DRM. So EA will say "Hey, our DRM fucked you all in the ass, but we still had great sales! That must mean it works, and that we should put it in ALL the games!"

And for those who insist that reviews be limited to "product, not politics", those reviews definitely pertain to the product. Would you positively review a car that comes with razor blades inserted into the steering wheel as a "product feature",or a book whose publishers insist that the covers be made of pure asbestos and mercury? I didn't think so.

Brilliant! I can save the money I was going to use to buy Spore for one of the October releases! Dead Space just made it into my top five.

You people are all asshats. The people pirating the game are the reason EA has to try to use DRM. The only reason EA bothers is in the slight hope that they can turn some pirates into sales. If people didn't pirate, EA would not protect, but EA has been around the block a few times and have seen people pirate its games time and again and now its trying to do something about it. If it allowed for 10 reinstalls half the people would still complain and the other half would give copies to 5 of their friends rather than encouraging them to buy it.

To the "I reformat twice a year" argument, get a fucking life and learn how to use a computer. If you weren't a twat you wouldn't fuck up your OS twice a year. Contrary to popular belief you can actually run a computer well for years until the hardware fails and even that can be avoided with proper maintenance. The reason your computer gets messed up and slows down is your fault, because you are not smart enough, period.

EA needs to get more sincere about its DRM efforts so that there is no discussion about piracy being an option for you cheap bastards. I would rather call up EA customer support and wait on hold for 45 minutes every time I wanted to play a game then give you people the satisfaction of playing for free at all.

And to Jim Sterling, you are renting the license to play the game. You never own the software; you just possess a limited use license. This is the case with nearly all software, videogames are no exception. I know Jim didn't say that but he should know by posting the quote he is in effect validating it.

And if this DRM did ANYTHING, AT ALL, to stop piracy, then I would be for it and would agree with you. Given that Spore was already cracked days ago, however, I would have to say that it does not.

Oh and calling people asshats is a fine way to change minds and get people to potentially see things your way.

Asshat.

I've noticed some of these arguments are similar to saying:

"Hey middle-easterners, quit complaining about being strip-searched every time you try to get on a plane. It's bin Laden's fault that we're such dicks to you these days. So SUCK IT UP AND STOP BEING SUCH A TERRORIST."

I think I'll start a furniture company and build chairs that fall apart after being sat in 3 times.

I mean, otherwise people could be buying the chair and letting other people sit in it!

and I'm not trying to troll, but really, if people keep pirating games and the companies keep adding annoying DRM and people pirate even MORE because of that, then how can you say PC gaming is in no danger of going anywhere?

I knew there was a reason I stuck to console gaming. I had fun with the spore creature creator, but my computer is always in a state of flux (upgrades, uninstalling software to make room for other games etc), that I'd use the three installs within a year. Judging by the attitude of some of the toiders here, do you think EA will accept my reasons and give me more activations? "omfg stfu loooser, get a better pc and buy the game again! Thank you for calling EA customer support, your call is important to us.

And how often do hardcore PC gamers upgrade and change their hardware, because according to the wiki that counts as an install? Hmmm? Yeah, shut the fuck up if you don't know anything about anything.

what kind of asinine logic is that? pirates who pirate the games get a version of the game that doesn't have all the RAM hogging DRM. How is putting ram hogging DRM in a game encouraging them not to pirate? It's not. It's doing the OPPOSITE.

I don't pirate because I believe that the the developers who make games I think are worth playing should be compensated for making good games. But crap like this makes me not want to buy or play the game period.

meh doesnt matter, Spore is a jack of all trades and a master of none. Its design stuff is awesome. The rest of it is an indie game.

@Resting Sound:
I can't disagree more. And please adjust your tone.

This game would sell without its drm, with a basic CD check. It would still be pirated, yeah, but it is being pirated as it is. Three times activation is extremely stupid. PC users upgrade, format often. I am a very competent pc user, and I too format once a year.

Bought it (its still enroute) and i'm going to wait for the inevitable crack to show up on the inter-tubes.
Its a damn shame they didn't revoke the rediculous DRM after the flurry of protest when it was discovered/announced.

I hope this ends up being a time-release DRM and when theyve racked up some sales they'll release a patch to remove / disable the DRM.

As always legitimate consumers are punished in a bid to stop pirates who will get around it. And if it's no more effective then leaving your keys in the ignition of your car with a "DO NOT STEAL" sign taped to the window you're clearly doing it wrong.

Also this will effect sales if only slightly...anyone going on Amazon will see the 1 star out of 5 and immediately become more wary about the quality of the game. Plus the effect might not be immediate but as more computer illiterate people start running into problems with Spore they'll become more frustrated and vocal and less likely to buy from EA in the future.

I'm a bit annoyed that this was clearly a kick in the pants for Mass Effect, and they still pulled almost the same nonsense for Spore.

Its shit like this that keeps me from buying PC games. I dont usually play games on PC but i was kinda looking forward to picking up Spore. But i have no computer at home so i would have to use my work PC to play but because of the work firewall i doubt i would be able to activate it. So "FUCK IT!"

That's funny... I played all day yesterday and it wasn't until today that I even thought about the DRM stuff. It just played like a normal game to me. I bumped all the options to max, the game runs smooth, loads REALLY quick, and dig those save game file sizes?!

I watched all the DVD extras good stuff. I haven't gotten to the space stage yet, but damn is that game fun.

Reviews wouldn't of effected weather or not I purchased this game. I knew I was going to purchase it since GDC2005.

Things like this really do lead people to pirate. I had to download the Warhammer RTS because the disks kept giving errors. Any attempt at customer service was met with a basic and blunt "You could by another copy".

I get better customer service from pirates than the company selling the game.

I had no idea the game even had this....one more reason for me not to buy it!

This is another reason why I do not buy online only games as the servers could be shut down at anytime leaving you with jack all. That and monthly fees are stupid when I already paid for the game.

It's more fun reading the Amazon Spore reviews and forums than playing the actual game. Hopefully this will be EA's jumping the shark moment.

It's simply amazing, I can still play Soldier of Fortune II Double Helix Online with a backup of my original game, and EA says that an original game will only last 2 installations? I'm pretty sure people at EA is everything but gamers. That's a pretty stupid move, EA!
