Spore customers lash out at DRM, sabotage Amazon score

Spore customers lash out at DRM, sabotage Amazon score photo
     Controversy

Customers feeling burned by the anti-piracy measures in the long-awaited PC game Spore have decided to take out their frustrations on Amazon, utilizing the review feature to tear the game to shreds for its "draconian" DRM and "dumbed down" gameplay.

Spore's DRM has been accused of eating up too much RAM, causing slowdown. Consumers are also outraged that they can only install the game three times before having to deal with EA's customer support. One reviewer called Spore a rental, pointing out that EA had total control over the title's use:

EA, of course, is not obligated to grant you that extra activation or even provide that service. In a couple of years they might very well even shut down the general activation servers, because "it's not financially feasible" to keep them running. What you will be left with is a nice, colorful $50 coaster. And you will be required to pay for another copy/license if you want to continue playing.

This basically means that you are actually RENTING the game, instead of owning it. The game WILL stop to function in the future. That's inevitable, because even if EA keeps the activation servers going, there IS going to be a time when EA will simply cease to exist because of financial issues or federal laws (like most business eventually do).

At the time of writing, Spore has an average Amazon review score of 1.5 out of 5. Of the forty people who reviewed it, thirty-three have given it one star, compared to the two who gave it five. Those five-star reviews, for reference, were posted in 2006 before the game was even out. Looks like Electronic Arts has a revolt on its hands, and not even Will Wright's charming little face can smooth this one over.

Heh, I notice the scores when i went to order Spore and was wondering what was up. Not sure how I feel about them. On one hand, I kind of feel that they should be rating the game itself, not it's DRM policy, but on the other hand, the Amazon reviews aren't video game reviews, but reviews of a product (Makes sense in my head :P) and so they need to review things like the DRM and the installation and what nots.

Ham-fisting your customers is really the wrong way to handle this problem. The pirates get away with no DRM, but the legal owners have to put up with this crap.

Also, this whole idea that you don't own a game when you buy it is insidious and is only going to get worse. Fear the coming digital download-only era.

Good. Since Will Wright's a proven talent, this won't hurt him, and I'm sure he'll understand why it's being done. Hopefully it will send a message to either him or EA and they'll at least consider doing something about it. Tough odds, but you never know.

DRM is killing entertainment. The industries need to get with it and stop biting the hands that feed.

yeah, it plays fine for now, unless you take the manual's word for it when you buy it that you can, say, have extra accounts created and linked to 1 of your 3 validations... which.. EA suddenly says you can't.. otherwise, yeah it does work well, although not entirely as advertised.

Yeah, the DRM on this game only affects people who bought the game legit. If you want to play, you can easily pirate it. If you want to pay, you have to agree to their BS. Yeah, great job guys.

woops, too much CR, not enough finish:

what i mean to end with is that if people don't bitch about it to EA and any other medium they have, then Spore dies a death of a Thousand Cuts...which isn't entirely Spore's fault.

but yeah, nation..nay, WORLD of whiners. :p

This is one thing that's been worrying me about digital distribution for a while, and part of why I haven't hopped on board the $35 id Megapack steal on Steam this weekend. Steam's a lot better about it, but in the end it's still a rental with an indefinite expiration.

I wouldn't doubt Will Wright himself would be against the DRM. I think it's only a matter of time before EA is pressed to the point where they remove it with a patch.

Well, that's what I'm hoping happens anyhow. Please, press on people. I'd actually like to buy this game sometime.

@Skimy:

Your ignorance is showing. Zip it up.

The pirates are not having problems. The game probably plays better pirated simply because it bypasses this sillyness.

That's the eternally silly thing about DRM: you piss off your customers and reward the pirates.

People knew it was getting the same DRM as Mass Effect way before the game came out...and BioWare removed it from ME, not EA. No clue as to why people didn't realize it would have the horrible DRM.

Such a shame. And all that hassle for a game was was cracked days before the release date. I'm not really sure if people will really want to play the game beyond the date EA ceases to exist though. I mean, can you even imagine that playing a 2008 PC game after that day?

On another note, Spore is a game ideally suited for educational use and for installations on school computer. Why be such a dick about it and limit it to 3 installs? EA could get their name branded into kids' retinas who will grow up to be potential customers. Hell, people who share the game with their friends and even pirates get the same exposure. Let them!

If they are not going to buy an EA game now, they might in the future. Unless you're going to be a dick about it of course, costing you more in brand image than it will cost in sales...

I thought they had dropped this scheme. they didn't?

well, thats it, then. as much as I want this game, I'm not going to buy it. not worth the money if the DRM wrecks the performance and potentially breaks the game after 3 installs.

Please, EA won't address this unless people don't buy the game, and since that won't happen, they have no incentive to change it.

@Ratcliff, do you actually believe Spore will sell very well? I'm certain it won't sell anything like Sims did, and I'm placing my bets now that it barely makes a dent in the casual gaming market. And since the hardcore market is really shitting on this game, they best be praying to their deities.

They will have this DRM up for a while but eventually when they feel the the risk of piracy affecting sales has diminished they will release a patch so you don't have to activate it anymore.

Oh and the game is awesome by the way.

I hope this helps EA to wake the hell up and realize that A) nobody but them wants this shit and B) this shit doesn't even do what it's supposed to do (i.e. stop hackers/pirates). All it does, and all it has ever done, is hurt legit costumers who aren't comfortable with using illicit third-party cracks to fix their legitimately purchased, but legitimately broken, software. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for them to remove it, though.

I was debating whether or not to buy this as I'm too busy with other games more worthy of my attention, but this DRM totally killed it.

I like to rebuild my PC at least once a year to get rid of those nagging Windows issues that start to creep up over time. It also makes me realize how many programs I install that I really don't use. With this bullshit DRM I might as well just call this a lease or rental. Bullshit, EA!

Wow. EA's primary server (www.ea.com) is getting crushed right now. DDOS in protest or something? The timing is a bit coincidental.
