While Dale may think that Forza Motorsport 3 is one of the best racing games ever made, it's not a game where buildings explode. Or planes crash. Or cars flip over on top of one another before exploding and going head-first towards an oil tanker that then explodes and takes out six other cars.
Split/Second, on the other hand, is. That's the reason why I've got my eye on this game, designed by the same folks who designed the hella solid racer, Pure. The game has you building up power to detonate "triggers" in the environment, like the ability to knock over an entire building or destroy a bridge are your opponents drive beneath it.
Sounds good? Yes, I'd say. Split/Second is schedule for release in 2010 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
Hmmm... Well as long as it doesn't fall flat on its face the way Fuel did, I think I can get behind this one. Might bring back some of the balls that the Burnout games used to have.
You know, my favorite moments in the Burnout games were always the Crash Escapes. You know, where some guy 50 feet in front of you crashes, and you find yourself driving under his car's flying carcass with barely enough room to breathe. And this game seems to have that sort of thing as its core concept. Allow me to say: Hell. Yes.
This game definitely has potential to be completely awesome. I hope they can pull this concept off. If they can I would probably fall in love with this game.
I played this at PAX, and I can assuredly say that it was at least the most surprising thing I found that I enjoyed on the show floor. Especially considering I even approached the Disney booth.
I played the demo roughly a dozen times. They sold me on the game on the spot, which very rarely happens in those kinds of situations. L4D2 didn't sell me on the spot, and I loved the first one.
I currently dont really like the concept of this racer. But, I have a lot of respect for Black Rock studio who consistently produce solid racers.. we'll see
Played this at the Eurogamer Expo last week and it blew me away, fast, shiny, explosive; ripping through the airport as it collpases all around you was a proper rush.
This game looks rad, but it seems like a lot of the intrigue comes from the unexpected, and after playing a course two or three times, you know what's coming, and it could become just a regular racing game to you at that point.

Split Second and Modnation Racers is where it's at!
I just hope it has the substance to back up all that style.
