Ok, confession time: I don't know much about the Splinter Cell franchise. Stealth-y tactical shooters aren't really, y'know, my thing. But I was really intrigued by Conviction's visual style and the write-pertinent-info-on-the-walls mechanic that Ubisoft showed off at E3 this year, and co-op kind of is my thing, so I guess I ought to start paying attention.

For those of you in the dark (like I was), Splinter Cell: Conviction features a co-operative campaign that serves as a prequel to the rest of the game. It's pretty standard spy stuff: A rogue Russian military officer has stolen some warheads, and America and the rest of the well-behaved Russian military team up to stop him. Of course, this is is a videogame, two dudes—one American, one Russian—are going to do it all themselves. Naturally.

Even if the story is kind of bland, the gameplay should make up for it, right? I hope so. The co-op campaign doesn't feature any of the dark and gritty espionage we're used to seeing (the Russians prefer explosions, apparently), and I didn't see any haunted messages floating on the walls, so I'm not sure this all ties into Conviction.

Luckily, Ben PerLee has a preview coming tomorrow morning that will put all of this in way better context than I can. This trailer will just have to hold you over until then. And in case you just really like it for some reason, the same trailer is available on Xbox Live.

Like, right now.

So Conviction has two campaigns? This isn't like the "two" campaigns in MGS2 that are really just one main campaign with a short little intro campaign on the side, is it?

@lakai

Since Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is the greatest stealth game ever made, I'd say you are missing out.

Last two Splinter Cells had co-op sections, whole section of levels built only for co-op instead of the single player levels with another person slapped in. (the last two on xbox original anyway, 360 double agent had no co-op, despite the original version's double agent did. I'm such a nerd for this series I actually played both the original and 360 versions of the same game).

Anyway...I never really liked the versus, but co-op was a lot of fun and well done, with only one complaint. They were too short.
There'd be like three or four levels which you and a friend could go through the whole thing in about a half hour. It was a great half hour, but it was a shame they never made more levels.

So here's hoping Conviction will give MORE co-op than the past, because given how fun the past ones were, I can't imagine them screwing it up in this new one.

When I saw this trailer it set me hoping this will be one of those buddy cop movies from the 90s where the Russian and American operatives start out not getting along, but by the end of the movie (game in this case) they got each other's backs. Also they encounter many shenanigans.

More on topic I only recently noticed that I wanted to try out these Splinter Cell games and got Chaos Theory CE from Goozex. My interest in the game is almost entirely based on how much I love Amon Tobin and the great job he did with the soundtrack to that game. So yeah, co-op sounds fun, I'm looking forward to seeing how this game comes out.

I borrow Chaos Teory from a friend and freaking loved it, but I never tried the multiplayer so I wonder if this will work like MW2's Spec Ops, or would provide a new narrative/campaign. (because I don't know if I'll be able to play with friends, it's very expensive to aford a game where I live :/ )

Old Splinter Cell Co-op was a lot of fun. Good to see them coming back to it finally.

i love he idea of the co-op campaign being the prequel to the single player! good thinking on ubi's part! splinter cell is my second fav series so im really hoping this doesnt turn out to be smokescreen for another double agent caliber adventure

For those not in the know, Chaos Theory was the first Splinter Cell (and stealth game, for that matter) to feature co-op. It had 4 levels and acted as a side story to the campaign.

Double Agent gets tricky as Ubisoft had the next-gen and current-gen versions. Xbox/PS2/Wii were lucky to get a fully featured, 15 level co-op campaign while 360/PC/PS3 got nothing.

It looks like Ubisoft realized the errors of their way, here. It's nice to get a traditional Splinter Cell element tacked onto the new campaign. This is looking rather interesting.
