Did you watch the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards for the actual awards themselves, the slew of announcements, or not at all? Based on some viewership data provided by The Cut Scene, that last choice applies to an increasingly large number of TV-watching individuals.
While it seemed to be an improvement over the previous VGA ceremonies, I still found myself only wanting to hear about Arkham Asylum 2 rather than the award winners -- Best Performance by a Human Female winner Megan Fox says "hello" -- for obvious reasons.
Even still, the show's viewership has continued to drop in the major live-viewing demographics. At 647,000 viewers, the 2009 VGAs' ratings "were down about 5 percent from the 2008 show and 30 percent from the 2007 show." Ouch.
Maybe people are finally starting to realize that most of the exclusive content worth caring about minus the random celebrity appearances and commercials can be seen online right after the show first airs.
So how did the VGAs do in the ratings? [The Cut Scene] [Image]

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I just wanted them to tell me news about games. Fgts.
Most awards shows are meaningless back patting affairs, the SVGAS are no different, probably even more so.
Captain obvious?!
I'd imagine most of the veiwers are tabloid journalists and politicians looking for something to RAGE about.
Or little kids wanting to spank the monkey at Megan Fox.
I propose kidnapping them and forcing them to do so at gunpoint.
That or just kick VG award shows in the head now and be done with it.
I've never seen a game box that says "Nominee/Winner at the Spike VGAs". Therefore, nobody cares.
Here in Britain, videogames have the Golden Joystick awards and the BAFTAs, and they mainly consist of games industry execs patting each other on the back while a comedian desperately tries to work a Mario joke into their routine.
Why? Because he has no idea what a real gamer wants.
All this Spike Awards show is, is a payoff for the developers to show an add for their game. Even the awards are a payoff. Practically an add. And next to none of the "exclusive" previews captured any interest. Most gamers would have just waited until they hit the internet.
What cracks me up, is how Uncharted 2 was game of the year all over the internet and on Spike, but if you ask some random person, they couldn't tell you what the game is. Of course, that's if you ask a random person ;).
Regarding the actual awards, I couldn't care less. It's not hard to take a glance around, determine what the most popular/best selling titles are and affix an award to them. It's great that video games are so popular now that they have an awards show, but I'd prefer something less patronizing.
Yeah! Let's take an entertainment industry that is based entirely around the visual medium and create games for the blind! It'll make so much money! While we're at it, they should also release songs in Braille for the deaf and blind! Yeah!
Feel Good Dollars don't translate well into actual currency. I hate to sound bad here...but if you're blind then it sucks to be you as far as games go. Just like the deaf have to suck it up as far as music goes, if you're blind then you have to accept that no studio is going to spend millions of dollars to make you a game.
Please make an awards show that has something to do with the actual gaming community and isn't some stupid star-parade.
We were certainly surprised that MW2 didn't get GOTY like we all expected. =P
The part with Jack Black's award was kinda funny though.
because real actors who do a video game deserve to win because they're actors in movies people know.
Yes, we do:
MANswers and 1000 Ways To Die
Well, unless it's at least somewhat entertaining. ;)
