The VGAs may be looked at with cynicism and contempt by a great many among the gamer community, but there's no denying that it's about as mainstream an award show as we're going to get. With that in mind, the nominations are in, and we now get to see who's vying for the biggest accolades that Spike TV has to offer.
Game of the Year is between Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Best PS3 game is between inFAMOUS, Killzone 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time and Uncharted 2. Best Xbox 360 game nominees are Arkham Asylum, Halo 3: ODST, Forza Motorsport 3 and Left 4 Dead 2. For the Wii we have New Super Mario Bros. Wii, MadWorld, Punch-Out! and Wii Sports Resort. The PC contenders are Dragon Age: Origins, Left 4 Dead 2, Plants vs. Zombies and The Sims 3.
It's interesting to note that the 360 nominees include multiplatform games, one of which (Arkham) was better on the PS3. 2009 really was the killer year for PS3 exclusives.
On a personal note, I'm asking everyone to vote for Demon's Souls as RPG of the year. The very fact it's a nominee is amazing, but it would be incredible to see the game win. It truly, truly deserves it, even though I know in my hear that Borderlands or Dragon Age will probably beat it.
Anyway, go check out the nominations, vote, and let us know who you're rooting for.
The one that's been out, what, one day? Seriously?
It's sad, but it's gonna happen.
What the fuck: no Dragon Age?
No competition really, GTA4 DLC is huge.
@Magnalon - I KNOW RIGHT!? Travesty, even if you're evaluating the console version with those console games.
@Solidus- I'd agree with you, if Street Fighter IV had HD Remix or BlazBlue's online multiplayer netcode/lobby set up. Its a game that came out early and was enjoyed, but played later in the year and loved.
what would that matter? I've had it for a week as of today, and I'm sure people relevant to this have analyzed it long before.
I would easily rank SF IV up there as a GOTY candidate. Given that it's one of the most balanced fighters of all time to boot, it deserves some award credit.
PS3 Game: Uncharted 2.
I haven't got an of those 360 games, and I'm getting Dragon Age on PS3. Demon's Souls is the honourable mention for GotY for sure, but CoD MW2 will probably mop up.
That's just seems really lazy.
GOTY: MW2
Best (fill in the blank): MW2
Then everyone will turn of the TV.
I voted for Demon's Souls, if any game/developer/publisher deserves the recognition from winning the award DS/From Software/Atlus do.
Also, why the hell is ODST on the list for best multiplayer games? It's just Halo 3's muliplayer + Firefight and I don't think one new mode is enough to earn an award. I voted for L4D2 but there are far better choices for nomination than ODST (Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 and NSMBWii to name a few).
Anyway Dragon Age is probably my Game of the Year, but then I can't play a lot of these games because they either have no PC versions (Uncharted) or they were delayed on PC (Assassin's Creed 2).
The whole idea of a single game of the year is kind of lame anyway, really. Maybe a best game in every genre.
They should really have a seperate co-op multiplayer section, since there is a decent number of games that can be in it.
Also major fucking LOLs at the Wii list. Madworld GOTY! hahafuckingha.
Interesting how some are quick to point out multiplatform nominees on 360, yet PC has its share of mutliplatform game too. Just saying.
No one mentions it because Left 4 Dead 2 PC and Dragon Age: Origins PC provide considerable upgrades to the 360 version, to the point where they shouldn't even be in the same category.
As for the winner, it's not really likely anything but MW2 would win, but let's pretend. :p I also agree at the huge shock in nothing for Dragon Age Origins. A RPG that people have been all about, must not be 'pro' enough for the award show, and must come off to dorky.
For shame. :o
Failure. Pure and simple failure.
Also, I'm embarrased that this is supposed to be the gaming industry's answer to the Oscars...
I mean, nothing really against AC or LFD2, but c'mon. We had so many innovative and great titles across all platforms this year and these two get a nod? They're just sequels with mild upgrades.
But then again, I think Spike just does this to grind our gears, so they can get attention and ratings. Thankfully, I don't want TV anyway, its just a portal I use to access games.
Its certainly not overrated, but you're right. It will win regardless, so this is a pretty moot argument.
And cod6 sucks, yes I said it, it's just like odst, a 3 to 5 hour campaign, survival mode(which in mw2 you need to actually get from point a to point b) and multiplayer...
