Spike's Video Game Award nominations are here! photo

The VGAs may be looked at with cynicism and contempt by a great many among the gamer community, but there's no denying that it's about as mainstream an award show as we're going to get. With that in mind, the nominations are in, and we now get to see who's vying for the biggest accolades that Spike TV has to offer.

Game of the Year is between Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Best PS3 game is between inFAMOUS, Killzone 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time and Uncharted 2. Best Xbox 360 game nominees are Arkham Asylum, Halo 3: ODST, Forza Motorsport 3 and Left 4 Dead 2. For the Wii we have New Super Mario Bros. Wii, MadWorld, Punch-Out! and Wii Sports Resort. The PC contenders are Dragon Age: Origins, Left 4 Dead 2, Plants vs. Zombies and The Sims 3.

It's interesting to note that the 360 nominees include multiplatform games, one of which (Arkham) was better on the PS3. 2009 really was the killer year for PS3 exclusives.

On a personal note, I'm asking everyone to vote for Demon's Souls as RPG of the year. The very fact it's a nominee is amazing, but it would be incredible to see the game win. It truly, truly deserves it, even though I know in my hear that Borderlands or Dragon Age will probably beat it.

Anyway, go check out the nominations, vote, and let us know who you're rooting for.

Assassin's Creed 2?

The one that's been out, what, one day? Seriously?

L4D2 for best game. You know it makes sense.

GOTY: MW2

It's sad, but it's gonna happen.

L4D2 is not even close to GOTY.

What the fuck: no Dragon Age?

Also: anyone else think it's funny that two of the 360 nominees are cross-platform? It's sad that Shadow Complex was snubbed, likely because it was an XBLA title.

Honestly, I feel like Street Fighter 4 should be nominated for GOTY. Call me a fighting game fanboy, but SF4 did amazing things for the somewhat dying fighting game community by opening it back up to the "casual" players who hadn't played a fighter in years, as well as the hardcores, and spawned tournaments throughout the country/world. In my opinion it's one of the best games to come out this year for sure, but oh well.

The Best DLC vote is between two games, GTA4 and Fallout 3.

No competition really, GTA4 DLC is huge.

Ah GOTY Time!

@Magnalon - I KNOW RIGHT!? Travesty, even if you're evaluating the console version with those console games.

@Solidus- I'd agree with you, if Street Fighter IV had HD Remix or BlazBlue's online multiplayer netcode/lobby set up. Its a game that came out early and was enjoyed, but played later in the year and loved.

what would that matter? I've had it for a week as of today, and I'm sure people relevant to this have analyzed it long before.

I would easily rank SF IV up there as a GOTY candidate. Given that it's one of the most balanced fighters of all time to boot, it deserves some award credit.

No Dragon Age for GOTY? No Demon's Soul for PS3? WTF?

GotY: Uncharted 2. (Persona 4 from my choices. PAL 2009 release qualifies it)

PS3 Game: Uncharted 2.
I haven't got an of those 360 games, and I'm getting Dragon Age on PS3. Demon's Souls is the honourable mention for GotY for sure, but CoD MW2 will probably mop up.

How the hell did scribblenauts get in the best handheld game category? It wasn't playable! How did that get there when pokemon platinum, fire emblem shadow dragon, and pretty much all of the atlus handheld games get snubbed?

That's just seems really lazy.

How about Borderlands for GOTY? Tons more fun than MW2 is. I don't even have a PS3 and I hope Uncharted 2 wins just because of the bullshit nominees.

GOTY: MW2
Best (fill in the blank): MW2

Then everyone will turn of the TV.

Does anybody else get annoyed that these awards shows always seem to completely forget about games that came out in the the first half of the year?

I voted for Demon's Souls, if any game/developer/publisher deserves the recognition from winning the award DS/From Software/Atlus do.

Also, why the hell is ODST on the list for best multiplayer games? It's just Halo 3's muliplayer + Firefight and I don't think one new mode is enough to earn an award. I voted for L4D2 but there are far better choices for nomination than ODST (Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 and NSMBWii to name a few).

Why do the individual platform nominess not contain only exclusives? I agree Jim, that is odd.

Anyway Dragon Age is probably my Game of the Year, but then I can't play a lot of these games because they either have no PC versions (Uncharted) or they were delayed on PC (Assassin's Creed 2).

The whole idea of a single game of the year is kind of lame anyway, really. Maybe a best game in every genre.

They should really have a seperate co-op multiplayer section, since there is a decent number of games that can be in it.

How can Modern Warfare 2 and Assassins Creed 2 be on the Game of the Year list but not on the PC, 360 or PS3 lists. That makes no sense. If it was a consistent rule it would be fine but both Left 4 Dead 2 and Uncharted 2 contravene it. Just makes it look like they're trying to appease as many publishers as possible. That makes them fucking pussies.

Also major fucking LOLs at the Wii list. Madworld GOTY! hahafuckingha.

and that's why i could care less about the VGA's, because they always snub nintendo titles. not one title up for game of the year? there's no way that assassin's creed is anywhere near to nsmbwii in terms of quality. could give a shit what the hd fanboys think are good games. jeff keogley, you are a joke, and this program goes a long way to prove gaming isn't art

Interesting how some are quick to point out multiplatform nominees on 360, yet PC has its share of mutliplatform game too. Just saying.

No one mentions it because Left 4 Dead 2 PC and Dragon Age: Origins PC provide considerable upgrades to the 360 version, to the point where they shouldn't even be in the same category.

For real on the WTF, GOTY nominee that has been out for one day. How Borderlands isn't there is odd, unless they are just giving it best new IP of the year award.

As for the winner, it's not really likely anything but MW2 would win, but let's pretend. :p I also agree at the huge shock in nothing for Dragon Age Origins. A RPG that people have been all about, must not be 'pro' enough for the award show, and must come off to dorky.

For shame. :o

Considering how much praise it garnered, I am shocked that Little King's Story is not up for Wii GOTY. Perhaps I should not be surprised, though, considering how little hype/reaction there was for the game. And, of course, the fact that this is Spike TV and a cutesy RTS-ish type of title just would not fly with the audience.

Cant they at least wait until after the year is over before they start this GOTY bullshit!? Hell, Spirit Tracks and The Saboteur isnt even out yet! Also, either make the GOTY decisions fully based on the community's votes, or fully based on jury panel votes. The fact that they've pre-picked the nominees for us is just bollocks! My GOTY could have been a handheld title after all.

Also, I'm embarrased that this is supposed to be the gaming industry's answer to the Oscars...

This is why I know these award shows are mostly a joke. Most of these games just came out and most of the games save for Batman maybe that were released earlier this year get the shaft. Then again, holiday releases are usually the better ones.

I think Assassin's Creed 2 being up there says it all about Spike's credibility. Talk about some tacked on, paid-off nominations. Why not just put Rabbids Go Home up for GOTY while you're at it, Spike?

I mean, nothing really against AC or LFD2, but c'mon. We had so many innovative and great titles across all platforms this year and these two get a nod? They're just sequels with mild upgrades.

But then again, I think Spike just does this to grind our gears, so they can get attention and ratings. Thankfully, I don't want TV anyway, its just a portal I use to access games.

Since it's based on numbers, and not the quality of the game, and since mw2 is the most overrated game, it'll win, sadly...

These lists are a complete failure, too much mw2, and l4d2, I'll admit I'm a valve fanboy, but l4d2 isn't that great, it's really fun with friends, but not the best one ever...

And cod6 sucks, yes I said it, it's just like odst, a 3 to 5 hour campaign, survival mode(which in mw2 you need to actually get from point a to point b) and multiplayer...
