Spend $40 to teleport in FFXI photo

Recently, Square Enix decided to drop the first item in their Final Fantasy XI Player’s Collection. It’s a pendant with the price tag of $42.99, complete with silver-plated metal and synthetic leather. To their credit, Square Enix realizes that regular consumers are not willing to buy expensive and ugly items for no reason. So instead of just allowing the pendant to speak for itself, the company is offering an in-game bonus for consumers. Buying the pendant allows players to teleport around FFXI’s virtual world at will.

I think it’s always a bad deal for every MMO player involved when special abilities hit an external market. The necklace is a “unique one-time opportunity,” which may mean it will disappear in the abyss when all ten of them are sold, but I’m still a bit confused as to why a company would encourage players to break their own game. There’s a reason free-to-play MMOs aren’t any fun past the first couple of days, and it’s a direct result of this kind of system. Who wants to party up with a dude that can teleport around like a madman, or in extreme cases, use boxing gloves instead of gauntlets?

What do you guys think? Is it okay to toss out these items for in-game abilities that others won’t have access to? Does it hurt your MMO experience?

if you're enough of a grinding fan to play free asian mmos, then you prolly don't mind something like this either. these people can put up with anything.

Selling forty dollar telaportation? Don't the other diablo clones (MMORPGs) have portals to take you around the world?

Way to be different Square-Enix.

I don't see what the issue is. If people who really want this necklace thing buy it, and get rewarded with a teleport item it's not going to break the game. FFXI isn't like wow, this item probably lets you warp back to your home town or something similar. It's not going to be used for attack purposes, etc. There are already items that let you do this, i'm sure this is just another way to do it, or maybe it last longer.

every teleport the item gives you is already available but using a slower method, i.e. boat, or you can get there instantly if you have the destination homepointed and have BLM at 18 (which everyone does). most dedicated players (the kind who would spend $40 on an FFXI item) wouldn't use this very often, maybe once or twice a week, if that. the main benefit is that it's usable by lvl 1 characters, which makes a lot of the ports unavailable otherwise

here's what it gives you:
from 3 main cities to jeuno
jeuno to kazham
aht urgan to some other expansion area
selbina and mhaura to each other
i think that's it. mostly useless.

KoL has a 'donate to us get swag' option, and that was actually pretty cool. I think some MMOs can pull that kinda stuff off.

Actually if you can port to all those places, that is pretty cool. I don't think the necklace is ugly, and i dont think i'll buy it, but ya it's kinda cool.

My respect level for square since the square-enix merger has gone from 0 to 0. It would go lower and lower if it were possible...

Something doesn't seem right about this, but then again I said the same thing about Final Fantasy going online in the first place.

Yeah, it doesn't break the game. It just gives you the same teleport ability white mages are able to get. And I'm sure there's a minimum level requirement. If anything FFXI is too difficult and could use more stuff like this to make the game more accessible to non-hardcore players. I used to play and I'd go back if it were more like WoW, honestly. I loved FFXI.

mostly a waste for old players... just level your WHM to 40 and BLM to 18 and you have those same abilities...

but the pendant is kinda cool...

This entire game is just a pure waste of the FF name. I'm glad I never played it.

If you have ever played this game like a hardcore MMO fan, you would definitely drop 40$ on this pendant. Plus, it looks sweet as hell.

Also, the game is actually quite fun if you have someone to show you around so that you don’t just walk out and get your ass handed to you.

Also, also, cocks.

This item is nothing, honestly. You pay 45 bucks so that you can get the little pendant, not the in-game item. As others have said, the teleportations that you do with this are just instant versions of taking a boat or airship, which would take ~20 minutes anyways. On top of this, you can only use this teleportation once every 40 hours, then it has to recharge.

tl;dr The items saves 20 minutes every 2 days, doesn't break the game at all.
