The prospect of free-to-play indie PC games being upgraded visually and in terms of features for digital distribution on consoles is something that excites me greatly. Super Meat Boy, Cave Story, and Spelunky are the three that immediately come to mind.
We recently got our first look at the shiny new Spelunky for Xbox LIVE Arcade: four screenshots, all viewable here. It's difficult to say this, because I appreciate all the work Derek Yu is doing to HD-ify the game, but I absolutely adore his pixel artwork. So much so, that I dig the original look over the new style.
What do you think? Am I being unreasonable here or what? And yes, I realize there's a little "work in progress" disclaimer attached to the images.

Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Is this a reskin of the NES Spelunker?
No.
What I want to know is...when will Dereck get back with Bit Blot and help bring Aquaria's goodness to a console (wii would probably be best given the style, but I did try the 360 controller on windows and it worked well enough. The inability to leap as accurately as the mouse and quickly fire in various directions was missed though. Certainly worked though.
But bring it on Mr. Yu, I'm eagerly awaiting more indie games i enjoy coming to the consoles. Just please, don't forget the PC ;).
The HD graphics don't seem like anything I won't be able to get used to, but I still hope there will be an option for retro graphics.
BRING THIS STYLE TO PC DAMN IT D:
Ohh man, these graphics are looking gorgeous.
But then this coming out doesn't prevent me from still playing my PC version so no big deal.
The old style makes me think of pixel precision collision detection, but the new makes me wary of being caught out.
It's also a bit weird to see such old style games in such new style pixels; like seeing an old classic car done up in pearlescent fliptone paint :s
