Spelunky gets a new look for its XBLA debut photo

The prospect of free-to-play indie PC games being upgraded visually and in terms of features for digital distribution on consoles is something that excites me greatly. Super Meat Boy, Cave Story, and Spelunky are the three that immediately come to mind.

We recently got our first look at the shiny new Spelunky for Xbox LIVE Arcade: four screenshots, all viewable here. It's difficult to say this, because I appreciate all the work Derek Yu is doing to HD-ify the game, but I absolutely adore his pixel artwork. So much so, that I dig the original look over the new style.

What do you think? Am I being unreasonable here or what? And yes, I realize there's a little "work in progress" disclaimer attached to the images.

I know nothing of this, and are too lazy to research it.

Is this a reskin of the NES Spelunker?

Love it. And no it's not Spelunker. Check it out, the game's free on PC and fun as heck. One of the better indie games in the last few years.

What I want to know is...when will Dereck get back with Bit Blot and help bring Aquaria's goodness to a console (wii would probably be best given the style, but I did try the 360 controller on windows and it worked well enough. The inability to leap as accurately as the mouse and quickly fire in various directions was missed though. Certainly worked though.

But bring it on Mr. Yu, I'm eagerly awaiting more indie games i enjoy coming to the consoles. Just please, don't forget the PC ;).

Prefer the old style. It feels less cluttered than this.

The HD graphics don't seem like anything I won't be able to get used to, but I still hope there will be an option for retro graphics.

If the retro artwork already exists (it does) then just include it, a la Geometry Wars.

Yeah, retro is definitely way better.

Prefer the old graphics, but I guess it'd be better to see in motion.

It's hard to complain cause its Spelunky...but the original pixels were too legit. I'd rather pixels over HD for Spelunky, lets hope for DLC that lets one switch to the pixelated format...

I actually prefer this look. 8-bit has its charm and all, but the art style for this is really gorgeous. It reminds me a lot of Yoshi's Story in a way, only more oil painting than patchwork. My only possible complaint is that the backgrounds could be a little less detailed, or at least faded out more, so that it wouldn't be a distraction in moments where life-or-death agility is big.

BRING THIS STYLE TO PC DAMN IT D:

It's gorgeous but I prefer the pixels. I also don't have an Xbox and this isn't coming to Wii yet, so I'd probably bitch regardless :P

Am I the only person who thinks the HD graphics are gorgeous, and crush the pixel graphics in every conceivable way?

Yes, most likely. HD looks too shiny and crisp... or maybe I am letting his abnormally huge nose blur my true opinion.

Whilst I love the original sprites.... they wouldn't look so great on my HD tv, so the HD makeover is great. Here's hoping he keeps the original sprites in as an option though.

Spelunky is basically the champion of video games, so I'm excited for an update. The new graphics look pretty great, too.

I've stopped playing any of the updated versions of Spelunky on the PC because I want to be endlessly surprised when this comes out.

Ohh man, these graphics are looking gorgeous.

Love the new look. Stays true to the original (I could instantly see what it was before reading the headline) but with extra shininess. Good work.

I like the new look, but love the old look.
But then this coming out doesn't prevent me from still playing my PC version so no big deal.

they should offer both versions, but this still looks good.

I like the old, but I think that's because I'm of a certain age... 20 years ago I would've been dreaming about HD graphics for all the pixely games I played.

The old style makes me think of pixel precision collision detection, but the new makes me wary of being caught out.
It's also a bit weird to see such old style games in such new style pixels; like seeing an old classic car done up in pearlescent fliptone paint :s

Yeah, gonna have to agree. I love the pixel art, but maybe it's because I've spent so much time with it already.

The modern tag heuer carrera
comes housed in a black plastic case with stainless steel lugs at each side. The black
wristband is nicely crafted from leather, and in case you plan on banging your new watch
around a bit, the display is protected by a durable, scratch-resistant mineral crystal
face.
