Adorable "OMG Zelda" RPG 3D Dot Game Heroes features a cameo from legendary hole-digger Spelunker, and he seems quite excited to be in the game. From Software has been releasing a series of Japanese videos featuring Spelunker, where he tells us all about the retrotastic new game. He's talking in Moonspeak of course, but that doesn't matter. He's just fun to look at.

From Software is a studio that did a complete 180 in my estimation. When I played Ninja Blade, I honestly thought From was a load of crap, because I hadn't played such a derivative, unimaginative, mediocre game in ages. Then I played Demon's Souls from the same studio, and became utterly enchanted. With From having proven its prowess as an RPG developer, I have incredibly high hopes for 3D Dot Game Heroes.

It's out in Japan in a few weeks time. We're crossing our fingers that a Western release will be announced soon.

Like how I felt about Rocksteady until I played Arkham Asylum. Or how I hope to feel about FreeStyle after I play DJ Hero. Hurray for shitty devs making good games!

Only crap they made Ninja Blade! I guess they must have just been having a bad couple of... months?

Chromehounds was a legitimately interesting experiment, at least in multiplayer. In that game, From played with communication range and the loneliness that accompanied radio silence.

Maybe they've got one team making derivative single-player experiences (sorry, I'm not sold yet and would lump 3D Dot Game Heroes with Ninja Blade and Enchanted Arms) and one team making curious multiplayer ones.

"Shitty Devs" wouldn't turn out anything like Demon's Souls, sorry. It's more like quality devs making shitty games.

@Dreyfuss - Are you dumping 3DDH in with Ninja Blade and Enchanted Arms in the catagory of games you haven't played but are judging?

Also, do want.

I was suprised to see that this company also did Armored Core, and some recent Tenchu games. Both those series need a proper new installment that's actually good.

In the mean time this game along with Demon's Souls is great. I'm really hoping they make sequels to Demon's Souls already.

@TheStripe
I dunno. They have a pretty long rap sheet.

Maybe we can just call Robert Johnson-esque shenanigans.

Otogi, Chromehounds, and Armored Core are also solid From titles. :D Ninja Blade was indeed pretty disappointing, but I liked Otogi and Armored Core (though Armored Core did lose its flair after a while).

See, that's the thing with From. For the most part, when they make games, they don't fucking care what you or the last three-to-five years of game design thinks of what they made. They just went and made it, simple as that. That attitude leads to more failures than successes, but when it does work out...whew!

FROM SOFTWARE is a cool studio. They are responsible for Otogi and Otogi 2, which are the most underrated action games ever created.
Ninja Blade was a fun action game. It wasn't nearly as bad as uppity reviewers have said it was.
Enchanted Arms was a good RPG, although it got blasted by critics.

With Demons Souls and 3D Dot Heroes, I guess From has finally appeased the pretentious lot of game journalist. Yay!

From what I've understood of From, they make decent games that have 1 or 2 unique ideas. Chromehounds had the communication thing, Armored Core has the plays like a mech game before there were 3d mech games thing, Tenchu is Tenchu, Enchanted Arms had that unique battle system and Demon's Souls is everything you could want from King's Field only better.

Ninja Blade was an exercise in how to make a DVD game. Too bad people like playing real games and not pressing x in a split second.

From also is one of those companies that brings out a lot of different games regardless of how they will be received. The only games they don't bring out over here are the ones most people can understand why they don't bring it (see A.C.E.).

I might not like a lot of their games, but I respect the company for its attempts.

@ The Stripe: That's really cute. I said I "would" lump it in with those given what I know thus far. I've played Ninja Blade and Chromehounds. Sorry that we couldn't have a respectful discussion on both sides, maybe next time.

Strangely enough, I'm still curious about Enchanted Arms. Should I?
