SpeedGamers rock Metroid again for the good of others photo

Got some spare change laying around and want to support a good cause? The folks over at TheSpeedGamers are tearing through the entire Metroid series once again in order to raise money for the Halton Autistic Family Support Group. They do good things for families in need. The goal for this marathon is $15,000, and while they're rocking the games pretty hard they can use any help you can give to reach it.

The marathon began yesterday at 6 p.m. so they're still just digging their heels in for the full 72 hours of gaming. Sadly, they don't do the games in order, which I think would be awesome, but they're still doing all of them, even Metroid: Hunters. Check out the feeds if you've got some time to kill this weekend and donate a bit if you feel so inclined.

[Thanks to everyone who sent a tip in]

Then why is it genetic?

Keep in mind that they're playing the games in storyline order and not chronological order, just so everyone knows.

You're both wrong, do some research and you'll see that nobody really knows what causes it.

Oh, and before you call me an idiot, I have autism, so I should know.

It's storyline order. not release order. They are currently finishing a blind run of Metroid Prime 2

Ah metroid prime: hunters. One of my first online gaming addictions. I probably put like 300 hours into that game! Soooo much fun and very intense! Better see some of the hunters in Other M

What "powers that be" are you referring too? And yes, I don't think they know, many studies have been done on this, but they have never been able to establish a link.

I respect what the SpeedGamers do for charity, but the fact that they call themselves the "SpeedGamers" is a joke. I've watched their Final Fantasy Marathon (which they didn't even finish) and saw how agonizingly slow many of their players plowed through those games (especially Final Fantasy V, the guy would keep going through one dungeon only to die at the end eight times in a row because he was underleveled). There were some gems hidden within the inexperienced players, notably the FF1 and FF6 players, who knew what they were doing. The Mega Man marathon was an even bigger crock of shit. They played the Mega Man X games on a Gamecube controller of all things, and were stuck on Sigma's final form in Mega Man X3 for hours. It was appalling.

What NukaCola said.

These guys are by no means "speed gamers." They have multiple people playing at any given time (CHEATING!) and aren't even close to hitting any legitimate records.

@NukaCola, Arianol.

While some of what you say might be accurate, the point of our Final Fanstasy marathon was definitely more of an endurance test than one of speed. Some of our marathons may have a few weak links, but we are not what you would exactly call "professional" speed runners, people who will play one game non-stop for months, or even YEARS, perfecting.

We usually only have a few months between these events, so on top of the massive amount of work that goes into making sure one of these events runs smoothly, we have to find people to play and practice these games, people who also have their own lives outside of the group. Even so, we have many, many runs that are close to world record times, and actually at least one that BROKE a world record, but wasn't within the exact specifications to be officially counted by Twin Galaxies. If you don't believe me, I highly reccommend that you look back to our Zelda and Mario marathons.

But on top of EVERYTHING I just said... it's for charity dude... chill out. What do YOU do to help? Maybe instead of sitting around and bad-mouthing us, you should be helping spread the word about our cause, to both give back to the world, and to help change the view gamers have in the public eye.

A big thanks to all of our supporters, by the way. We couldn't do it without you. :)

Sincerely,
Tyler from TheSpeedGamers.com

Now Nintenuendo, its not nice to assume because someone doesnt understand what you're trying to do they're jerks.

I'm pretty sure they dont even care about it that much.

I never said they were jerks, but by their language they obviously didn't have the most respectful intent with their comments. Maybe I went a little out of hand, but I've been hosting all day, and I'm freaking tired. But to each their own. I just wanted my fair chance to add to the topic, and I'm gonna leave it at that.

Once again, I've said that I respect what the SpeedGamers do for charity (I've even donated some money during their Final Fantasy marathon), I'm just sharing some of the frustration I had watching some of their players play the games. People in the webcam chat would be posting polite, helpful comments for the players, and they would just ignore the help (And what was with their weird obsession with vegemite during the FF marathon, what the heck was that all about?). I understand the endurance level of it can be excruciating and I respect that as well; you're better off calling yourselves the EnduranceGamers.

Oh, and as for the insinuation that I just sit on my ass and moan about the Speedgamers, I actually shared the SpeedGamers Final Fantasy marathon news with several people, including a huge forum I go to. So I did my part in spreading the SpeedGamers name and their charity work.

I gotcha, I gotcha. I'll stop now. I'm just defending myself from people who think I'm some Grinch who's against charity. I hope they succeed in their donations (or even go over the limit, as was the case with the FF marathon). I'll let the forum I go to know that there's a Metroid marathon going on for charity.
