Spector tried to obtain Deus Ex, planned a successor photo

Famed designer Warren Spector wasn’t done with Deus Ex after he and his studio finished the follow-up Invisible War. In a recent interview with Variety, Spector said that he tried to acquire the rights to the IP from Eidos, but before that, he had plans for a game in the vein of Deus Ex ready to go and needing a publisher.

“There were and still are Deus Ex stories I would like to tell,” said Spector. “That story is not done for me. [For the sci-fi game] I sort of filed the serial numbers off.

“Deus Ex was very much a game of the millennium,” he continued.

It makes you feel fuzzy, right? Alas, it doesn’t seem likely that Spector will snatch Deus Ex 3 from Eidos, We’re also willing to guess -- just to throw it out there -- that Spector is too busy now to mess with whatever he had cooking at Junction Point a few years prior. Epic Mickey is happening.

I can wait. Soon as Spector wants to make anything even reminiscent of Deus Ex, I will be standing by with my wallet.

Aw man, Deus Ex 3 would have been awesome. The world needs another good conspiracy theory game.

deus ex is a true masterpiece in need of an hd remake. i don't want any more sequels because they'll never come close to the original and would just pervert the originals story like invisible war did. i would like more games that are inspired by deus ex though.

Deus Ex is my favourite single-player PC game of all time, easily. I only played it once (on the Realistic difficulty, so it was long playthrough), and would love for an HD remake to come out before I get around to replaying it. That being said, I think the graphics are cool in a retro kind of way and I don't mind them, unlike System Shock 2 which, unfortunately, does not hold up so well.

After Invisible War he can keep his damn hands off.

Then again, I'm not much more confident for the third one that's in development now.

I never understood the hate for Invisible War, aside from the lack of exploration, which made it shorter, which is never cited as a complaint. IW took everything that was redundant in the original and eliminated it.

Go on, tell me how certain weapon mods didn't negate the role of certain biomods or vice-versa. These totally added depth and complexity, not redundancy or lack of balance. PC gamers never looked at the original through rose-tinted glasses because DX2 was also on Xbox, not at all.

All the same, I would have liked to see the franchise continue, but sadly anyone that shares their IPs with Eidos or Crystal Dynamic seems to share the same terrible fate - they will take your franchise and turn it to shit. Or in Tomb Raider's case, just alternate between shit and good.

Maybe SE can help them fix that now that they own them. At least CD hasn't fucked up the Thief series yet.

@ The Silent Protag

I felt a lot of the original DX was built around the cyberpunk philosophy of everything being customisable, and cutting your own path through the world. IW took away ammo types, skills, weapon mods, but also made the augs swappable--which I think removed a lot of the consequence of the first game.

I definately agree that the smaller maps lessened the exploration and freedom of the first, and I think that changed the gameplay significantly enough that many people ended up hating IW. Personally I didn't mind it too much, and I thought the story was pretty good. JC Denton ended up being a total douche, but.

Seconded on you both. Deus Ex was amazing, and I personally loved DX2, as well, and am cautiously optimistic about Eidos's DX3 that's in development, along with Thief 4. Speaking of which, it's about time for them to make an actual press release for DX3, rather than a teaser site, with surprisingly active forums, for how little news is out.

Anyway, Spector needs to finish up Epic Mickey, which I hope will build his war chest up, so we can get another truly great game (not that EM won't be great, it just doesn't mesh with my interests like DX did/does)

There is actually an HD remake in the works by the mod community (project HDTP http://offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/). They are taking their sweet time though which is understandable since this game is so complex. There is also the Deus Ex REVISON mod in the works which will add a lot of new content to the core game.

That's how awesome Deus Ex is; almost 10 years after its release, there is still an active mod community involved with it. I personally still play it once a year.

As for IW: I liked the game but the lack of exploration and customization really decreases the replay value for me. I sold my copy immediately after finishing it.

lol @ "This guy broke Deus Ex." This guy MADE Deus Ex. It wouldn't have been what it was without him. He didn't have nearly as much involvement with DX2 as he had with DX1.

After finishing this article, I am now in the process of inventing a parallel universe travel device in order to live in the same world that Warran Spector is making Deus Ex games instead of disney holiday fodder.

WANT = Deus Ex 3 with or without Spector.
