When the VGA teaser for the newSpec Ops game was revealed, I went ahead and said the game will probably be crap. Mostly because of that horrid PS1 series. Well, I'm eating my words as this trailer for Spec Ops: The Line looks good. Really good.
It's hard to say if this trailer is a cut scene, all in-game or a mixture of both. The action scenes certainly look like they're in-game at the very least. The sand mechanic seems like this will set the Spec Ops apart from your typical third-person shooter too.
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

I was only when I downloaded the HD trailer that I could positively confirm it was ingame. Those off-screen youtube vids had me guessing. I could have swore this was CG.
Bjork is a really odd choice for that trailer. The game looks interesting... dunno what kinda angle they were coming from with the music though. Nothing wrong with some Bjork, she's rad, but it felt weird paired with the footage for me.
I'm really intrigued by the dune blasting out from under you. What I'm left wondering is if it's going to be something akin to CoD games which are heavily scripted and the same thing happens over and over, or if it's actually dynamic. If it is dynamic, that'd be bloody awesome.
Right now, I'm actually rather looking forwards to it.
It was an awesome trailer yes, and throwing Bjork onto anything resembling chaos and war is ALWAYS a good decision...but one thing bugs me. Anybody remember Fracture...ya know, that other game that had focused on strategic terrain deformation? Remember how it sucked? Yeah, I can't shake the fact that this'll wind up the same way...though I really hope it doesn't, this seems to have a lot more goin' for it then that.
Out of this whole trailer, the story is what has me intrigued... I mean the upside down flag, all those upside down dead soldiers, the destroyed city covered by sand, the insane guy waiting for his captain to rescue him... sounds mighty interesting
"Anybody remember Fracture...ya know, that other game that had focused on strategic terrain deformation? Remember how it sucked?"
Yeah but that game didn't look HALF as good as this, nor did it have any real identity of a game at all. This seems to have more with only a trailer. Granted I may just be hyping it up but im excited.
If this game is actually open world, Ygar or whatever has something on their hands because I don't really recall any open-ended games with strict 3rd Person controls.
I'm very intrigued... I love how he's hiding behind cover and then suddenly has to grab hold to the top of the cover because the sand is flowing away beneath him...
Looks very intense. I wonder if Bjork approved the use of her music in the trailer or if it was a record company tie-in. It's not that she is a pacifist, as she's been known to go apeshit on paparazzi, but is this the type of setting that would gel with her? Just wondering because I'm a big Bjork fan. As for the game, looks like more desert warfare on a catastrophic level. That tends to be fun, and with what looks like destructible environments, this has potential to be great. Then again, I'm getting tired of firing guns in games. Maybe its just my age creeping up, but the whole "shoot to kill" angle of games is wearing thin for me.
Maybe it's my personal tastes, but wow. I really didn't think that music went with the trailer.
Looks good. Think it was both. In game graphics, but a movie scene.
Of course, at this point 90% of games coming all look amazing graphically. I'm still sitting back looking in the developers direction with crossed arms and no expression on my face.
Not impressed yet. They have a lot of past bad games to overcome.
How did the music not match the desensitized feeling of a battlefield, the desperate struggle of survival and the explosive despair of possible oblivion?
That "type" of music could fit fine...with the right song. Just personal taste, but that song sounded more like nails on a chalkboard. I'm not a Bjork fan and her high wail just bugged me, closer sounding to nails on a chalkboard than sadness or lonliness.
This game looks like a scripted, linear storyline to me. I can't see where people are getting 'open world' from. The developers talk about the sand like it's dynamic, but I'll bet you anything they are just scripted events. That's all FINE to me...so long as the story and gameplay are good. I prefer to keep my expectations to 'linear scripted' so that I can only be pleasantly surprised if it's not.
