Specialist: real combat and videogames are the same to a gamer's brain photo

"These video games -- gosh, they've gotten a lot more realistic over the years," says Fox 26's newscaster Ned Hibberd in the opening of a segment called Videogame Addiction on Houston's Fox station.

In the segment, which can be found in their Videogames can be Explicit, Addictive story, they talk with neurotherapist Ron Swatzyna, who says that gamers' "brains can not tell the difference between being in real combat and being in a game," and continues to say that "the brain is going into a survival mode."

This statement is followed by stock footage of fiery explosions while the newscaster likens this "survivial mode" to the posttraumatic stress disorder a soldier would get on the front lines of war.

Swatzyna also talks about videogame addiction, stating that he has "seen people who have stopped playing the game go into withdrawal-type symptoms - shakes and everything else."

Finally, Ned Hibberd rounds the segment out by saying that "Parents who let their kids pour their youth into an online alterego might be creating a pixelated Peter Pan."

You can watch this fine segment on MyFox Houston's Web page

Tell me, Destructoid reader and avid gamer, how are you coping with your posttraumatic stress disorder and incessant shaking?

[Thanks, TT]

I don't really understand these people. They're talking about some damned extreme examples. Sure, maybe this would happen if the person was glued to a game from morning until night. Sure, maybe this might happen if the person is mentally unbalanced. But normal people? The vast majority of people who play games? Uh, no. Real combat and video game combat couldn't be further apart, in my mind. I love FPSes and yet I hate real weapons.

Coming from Houston, trust me, the fox channel is the shittiest news station here. They were probably looking for some shock news header so they could get more than 5 viewers.

Man these "experts" really give actual decent doctors and neuroscientists a bad name.

"brains can not tell the difference between being in real combat and being in a game,"
Oh really? Is that the technical explanation neurotherapist Ron Swatzyna? Because I'd really like to see the study that demonstrated this you fucking quack. Neurotherapist... what a disgrace.

Naturally we can't tell the difference, I mean, when we get blown up in real life we can just respawn at the spawn point right? And of course ammo and special weapons are just left around on the ground for the first combatant to get to them so they have the advantage, NATURALLY.
The big monsters
Blasted landscapes
Corrupt Governments (oops, I think reality and video games are blurring again...)
And don't forget that damn loading screen first thing in the morning when you wake up.

I thought people just go on shooting rampages nowadays? That would be my first resort after playing 'super-killographic' video games for days at a time. After all, theres no consequences right?

I cant remember anything
Cant tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
Im waking up I can not see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please god,wake me

Back in the womb its much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But cant look forward to reveal
Look to the time when Ill live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please god,wake me
Now the world is gone Im just one
Oh god, help me hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell
