Space Station Tycoon makes Wii more useful ... at least it's not Mario Tycoon photo

Now this is what I'm talking about. In order for the Wii to survive, it needs quirky games that don't begin with Mario, Zelda, or Metroid and that at the same time use the Wiimote as it really is -- a glorified mouse. Just announced, Space Station Tycoon (from the makers of Outpost Kaloki X on Xbox Live Arcade) is exactly the kind of software that will make the Wii not so much of a doorstop.

The game will be out sometime this summer and sounds to be almost exactly like Outpost. From CVG:

Just like its Xbox counterpart, the focus in this game is on managing your money, investing in building outposts to increase business and, in turn, increase your income.

"The basic goal of building a station to serve customers and some of the economic elements will be very familiar to players of Outpost Kaloki X, but even the basic mechanics, like how customers make their buying decisions, have undergone an overhaul", Wahoo Studios designer, Jeremy Throckmorton, told IGN.

Now if only the Wii had some sort of functional online ability and we could play others. But hey, with the Wii, you gotta take what you can get, right?

Well this game certainly isn't going to make my Wii less of a doorstop.

Mine isn't a doorstop. I use it pretty often as it is. This game does interest me, however, and I do want to see more. Some company just announced 12 or 13 games for it recently too, so it's not like it's lacking interest from developers.

Looks ok to me... How's the Outpost game on Live play?

I liked Outpost, and to me, this game seems perfect for what the Wii does.

Looks like it could be a very interesting game.

You are absolutely right. Mario, Zelda and Metroid games obviously have way too much of the current Wii game market. And Elebits are Trauma Center apparently are poor examples of quirky games?

I was under the impression you couldn't play online with the XBL version either. Oh wait, you were just trolling Nintendo fans again. :)

If it's supposed to be new and improved, then wouldn't adding online play be a nice improvement?

I thought I was the only person to own this game? It's actually not bad.

Additionally, Outpost was a small, early XBLA title. Developing a "real" game for a console is a bit different, isn't it Mxyzptlk?

The article on IGN says they might use WiiConnect24, but there won't be online play. Sounds like they might do SOMETHING with the network, at least (like Elebits).

idk, Alien Hominid started out as a flashgame at newgrounds.com and it turned into a pretty good console game, it is at least worth reading through part of a review or something.

We need a sequel. Space Coster Tycoon.

Outpost was a great game. It's still one of my favorite XBLA titles... even if it did ship with some achievement glitches.

It sounds like it would be a good downloadable title for the Virtual Console, but am I correct in assuming it's on DVD?

For a tycoon-style sim game? I'll pass on the multiplayer. Unless it involves epic space battles with other stations. Pew pew pew!

Summa's three ingredients for any good game are:
1. Good graphics
2. Online play
3. Advanced A.I.
(He should write a book about it, seriously)

Off course - again according to Summa - the Wii isn't capable of doing either one of those three. It's stated many times before by Summa himself that it's just his own opinion and everyone is entitled to there own opinion. Mine is that all this tells a lot more about Summa than it does about the Wii.

As for the game I'm with Mxyzptlk here, the game need some Pew pew pew! for enjoyable multiplayer. A battle on who can build the biggest space castle doesn't really sound that interesting to me.

Do you people really expect this game to be good, or are you just posting to disagree with Summa?

Destructoid, hi. I know you don't care, because you don't depend on your readership, and this isn't specifically related to this article, but I'm going to stop reading this blog. It's gotten so fucking stupid lately with all the bitterness and fanboyism that it makes me wonder why I read it in the first place. Hell, even Joystiq isn't whoring for attention as much as this place.

When I can find better-reasoned and more timely opinions and facts on NeoGAF than on Destructoid, it's time for me to leave. I hope this place improves. Wouldn't count on it though.

O RLY? I'm just kidding. Sorry to hear you're leaving, Le Guru. Maybe if you stop by in about 6 months, the Wii will be pushing games with online multiplayer. Summa will ease up on the Nintendo hate. And in turn, everybody will ease up on the Summa hate. Sarcastic, bitter, gaming blog FTW!
