Space opera DS RPG Infinite Space looks good photo

If anything is my "jam," it's the RPG space opera. These games usually have confusing plots that don't make much sense in the end, but it's all about the journey, right?

The new journey will be called Infinite Space, coming to Japanese DSes in June. MadWorld makers PlatinumGames will be releasing Infinite Space at home (Japan) first, though Siliconera says that the game slated for a worldwide release.

In this RPG you'll create a fleet of spaceships, pilot them, and work your way up the ranks to eventually become a captain for the fleet. Naturally, with this kind of setting there's a story mode, but there's also local wireless spaceship duels to be had. Sounds good to me!

Unfortunately the screenshots show us nothing in the way of game play yet. Just pretty pictures, heavy on the anime style. But I'm already digging the concept and the art, so we'll mark this one down as one to look forward to.

YES! There are far too few spaceship games in the world, and a space FLEET game is a good step in the right direction.

Do you play the entire game with the "chick" staring at you from the top screen? Creepy.

@Bluexy

Mass Effect

Martian Succesor Nadesico (Anime)
Harlock (Anime)
Some consider Robotech/Southern Cross/New Generation (Anime)
Outlaw Star (Anime)
Star Wars
Battle-Star Galactica

It's also referred to by it's sub-genres, Space-Western/Space Romance. Honestly, it's very broad, and a lot of people consider anything in space to be a space opera.

As far as I am aware, this is a first of it's kind for a Japanese developer, other than maybe the 360 Sylpheed (didn't play it so dunno). That being you play this thing with actual space ships instead of a normal JRPG with elements in space. All the anime properties with space stuff got made into SHMUPS or were terrestrial bound mecha action stuff I think.

They showed plain looking screenshots of some gameplay stuff a long time ago and it was just a bunch of space ship data and stat looking screens. Really excited to see what the actual gameplay will be, considering who it's coming from.

I really didn't like the battle system at last year's TGS, but it still was pretty interesting.

My copy is already ordered and paid off. Has been since like January. To say that I want this is an understatement.

I've read an article about this game; it's meant to be based on a sci-fi novel, and starts with the protagonist escaping a planet on a spaceship. In doing so, his sister/girlfriend/female partner is imprisioned by those on the planet in retaliation. Then begins a mission to get re-enforcements to rescue her.

And what the hell is going on here?

A JRPG mated with a Star Control 2/Starflight game? Here is my money. Gimme.
