Space Invaders Get Even to invade your wallet

Defending 3D cities from a wave of 2D retro baddies in Space Invaders Get Even sounded pretty cool to me. But, after hearing of this pricing scheme, some of the Do Want-ness has worn off..

Game|Life says that although the game is priced at 500 Wii Points ($5), you'll have to pay that much for each of the four levels, making the total package $20.

To be fair, I haven't had a chance to play Get Even yet. Game|Life seems to dig it after playing a bit of the Japanese release, but says that the thrill didn't last that long:

Unfortunately, my $5 went rather quickly -- it won't take very long before you've finished the first set of three levels and the game gives you the modern-day equivalent of "Insert Coin To Continue."

I love the ideas behind this game, but I don't love the pricing or episodic release structure. What do you think?

[Thanks, Andrew B.]

No thanks, I'm still set with Space Invaders Extreme. Maybe next time.

So, this game is apparently worth twice as much as Bionic Commando:Rearmed... somehow I doubt that.

It seems like a scheme to get more money out of a gamer than they would normally be willing to pay for such a game.

What is normal pricing for a game? If this was on the DS people would have no problem paying $20 to $30 for it. So because they give you the option to buy as little, or as much of it as you want to that's now a bad thing? No one will force you buy all $20 worth of content if you don't want to, but the option is still there if you want it. How is that bad?

I see what Pew did there.

@PEICanada7

I think it's just kind of a hassle to buy the game in packs like that. It's like selling each disc of Blue Dragon for $20 and asking you to buy all of them. For me it's not really the price but the idea that you have to buy a game in pieces.

Also, shelling out $30 isn't an issue for a game that I can physically hold. But when the game is downloadable, you're cutting some cost of materials. Because of this, I expect my DLC to be a bit cheaper than buying a disc or cartridge.

The episodic nature of the game is probably a work around to avoid the physical limitations of Wii Ware titles. If they break it up into multiple downloads the can make much bigger games... however, if thats the route more games are taken, I'm out, my Wii is already full. I don't like any of this episodic DLC crap, just finish the damn game first and release it on disc.

Of course no one is forcing you to buy the whole game or part of the game. My point is that they would probably get fewer people to buy the whole thing at $20 than at $5 for the individual parts. It's sort of like those collectable card/miniature games--the individual packs are cheap enough to get you started, but if you get hooked and you want the full experience you end up spending quite a bit more.

I also agree with nintendoll--due to limited capacity and no good way to backup content, you are essentially leasing a game. To me the price point seems too high for that.

This is entirely unsurprising. Squeenix seems to be trying to be worse than Namco when it comes to DLC rape.

I thought it was exactly the opposite - you were playing as the Space Invaders in this one?
