Space Battleship Yamato creator debuts new manga on Wii photo

I was less than ecstatic to see that the first manga offering for the Wii would be Princess Ai Monogotari, a series co-created by Courtney Love, as that type of thing just isn't my cup of tea. Leiji Matsumoto is more my thing, thanks to a little show called Space Battleship Yamato that made a big impact on me way back in the early eighties, and his new manga is on the way to the Wii on both Japanese AND English!

Kotaku reports that the series is called Out of Galaxy Koshika and goes on sale April 14th. Like Princess Ai Monogotari, it will have Japanese and English text options and retails for 500 points for the first chapter and 200 for each chapter afterwards. Of course, you'll need a Japanese Wii to get your hands on it. Personally I prefer to read scans of manga until it is released in the US (or if it ever is), so I'm not sure I would use this service even if it was available on my Wii. Would you?

I'm more a scanslation man myself, but it's not as if I have a Japanese Wii anyway. The demon of region locks should be exorcised from this world!

I just had a nerdgasm. I'm currently listening to Daft Punk's Discovery album at work. Then I see completely unrelated Matsumoto art on my dear dear dtoid.

I just don't see myself reading manga on the Wii. That's what I have my computer for. And is that girl in the header Stella from Interstella 5555?

* Space Battleship Yamato is the greatest anime ever. And the girls that Leiji Matsumuto draw are very beautiful, like Nova and Trilena :-)

Hmmm... It's cool for the sheer novelty of it. I'd probably only purchase some really good manga, but I wouldn't do it regularly.

It's pretty expensive, too. You could pick up full volumes of manga at cons for five bucks.

And fuck Courtney Love's gay ass manga. >:

I love Reiji/Leiji Matsumoto as much as anyone (especially Arcadia of My Youth) but I swear the man only really knows how to draw five or six characters. Granted, he has extracted an incredible amount from them, but I do hope we don't end up with three Maetels, two Harlocks and a Tetsuro.

The pricing is a bit strange. When you think about it on its own, it's not so unreasonable, but when you compare the first chapter of a manga to the price of an NES game, it seems ridiculous.

Wow! I've not seen this series for YEARS! (I originally got into it when I was playing an obscure Laser-Disc arcade game called "Freedom Fighter" in Orlando)
when I researched this game I came across this old series. I believe it's the same artist/concept artist. (The game was based on "Galaxy Express 999")

Now to go and find a copy of the old Anime. ^_^

here's an article about it:

And after a little digging, it's the same artist/author.

Galaxy Express 999 was what made me watch anime.

I have a HUGE soft spot in my heart for Leiji Matsumoto.

Plus he made an animated movie based on a daft punk album. That is just pure amazing.
