South Park XBLA game gets a genre, still ten years late photo

Announced at this year's E3 as an Xbox LIVE Arcade exclusive, some details on Doublesix Games' South Park title have been revealed. Well, two details at least.

According to a listing on Xbox.com, the South Park XBLA game will be a strategy game. While I'm not sure how that's going to work, it's good to hear that it won't be a party game, a kart game, or -- God forbid -- another first-person shooter game. It's also listed as being published by Xbox LIVE Productions, Microsoft's internal first-party "publisher" for Xbox LIVE content.

As someone who hasn't watched a single new episode of South Park is close to eight years, I'm a bit confused as to why Microsoft is deciding to push this game now of all times. Is anyone really still interested in playing a South Park game? Are we still laughing at this stuff?

South Park is still huge, it's one of Comedy Centrals best rated shows even after all these years. It's arguably become more funny as the years have gone on. I don't see why they wouldn't think it could be a money maker.

The show's still funny, and hasn't really hit a dip in terms of the writings, save for the one season where the staff was doubling their work to release Team America. Aside from that, it's been surprisingly strong.

I am with you Nick. The show is just not interesting to me anymore. As such, I don't really care about the game either. On the other hand, I do have friends that still mention the latest episodes of south park. So I guess someone watches it.

I really liked the FPS south park game on N64 :( Of course, I haven't played it in a very long time.

Just watch Imaginationland.

That right there...is just gold.

But yea, South Park is still good. Kinda surprised their coming out with a game though. You know, after all this time.

I'm torn:

On the one hand, as a South Park fan, I'm squeeing inside. Some of the best South Park episodes have been on recently, and I don't know what kind of crazy shit Matt and Trey have concocted for this game.

But, as a gamer, every South Park console game that has existed has reeked of pure, putrid, organic stink-ass. Never in my life have I had an enjoyable experience controlling any of the SP characters, and I'm pretty sure I never will.

2 halves of one nerd: can they co-exist?

Nick, you didn't see the World of Warcraft South Park episode? Even if you're not into WoW, that episode is pretty funny.

Hopefully the strategy game will be based on the "Imagination Land" episode. That would be awesome.

The N64 game was great! A South Park strategy game... sounds iffy tbh.

So, something is not funny just because it's old? Is it cool to just stop liking stuff after a few years? I guess I shouldn't watch Seven Samurai or Lawrence of Arabia anymore, or play any vintage games.

I'm with you, Nick. I don't really get all the fuss about South Park. It's not that funny. It may still get ratings, but it's not really "hot" right now. A new game does seem kind of odd.

I agree with everyone in that South Park has actually gotten better over the years. It's still pretty big.

That said, I have no desire to play a game based on it.

I don't watch it that often, but whenever I catch an episode, its not too bad. I'm not going out of my way to watch it, though.

But seriously, what the hell? I'm having N64 cow tossing flash backs.

@Penelton21

Did you play, and/or What did you think about Chef's Luv Shack? I thought it was pretty damn good, but I haven't played any of the others, (coz I know they're prob crappy).

Since I never played any SP on N64, any new SP games do still interest me. I know SP has saturated the airwaves enough, but, I don't tend to watch it except once or twice a week. Every new one still has some new twist to me. ;D

"Are we still laughing at this stuff?"

is Nick a humor snob? or is it an unintentional confession that his tastes in comedy are dictated by fads and trends?

If South Park is funny, then its funny. the popularity of the show should have no direct influence on whether its funny, even though whether the show is funny would likely have a direct influence on whether its popular.

I would definitely say South Park has gotten funnier and cleverer over the years -- I can't stand the shit and dick jokes of the earlier episodes. Some of the episodes as of late have been hit or miss, but there have been some great ones over the last few years.

How can you knock the N64 game? Any game that lets you piss on a snowball and throw it at your friends in split-screen multiplayer is A-okay by me! Of course that was quite some time ago.

I can see as to how you would wonder how people would still be laughing at South Park having not seen an episode for some 8 seasons. Really you should do yourself a favor and check out some of the newer stuff with an open mind. Although most of the newer stuff is probably best when watched at release as it generally has something to do with whatever hot topic is in the news that week. Or maybe you just are old and lost your sense of humor :p

They should make a point and click South Park adventure game with the player put in Cartman's shoes and he needs to get revenge on someone (ala Scott Tenorman). Or escape from a rain forest. Or something else.

Fuck yeah I'm gonna buy this game. South Park is a lot better now days. While it still has toilet humor, most of the time they make fun of topics in the news to make people realize how stupid those news stories are. Like Static Jak said, watch the Imagination Land episode and your thoughts will change about South Park.

I don't think anyone said you and nick don't have the right to have poor tastes, i think part of the response was based on nick's implication that he hasn't seen the show recently and still judged it. I also don't think my or other's comments are too be taken too seriously.

Honestly, the last few seasons of SP are far better than any before them.. or anything else on television. Your attempt at SP sarcasm really failed here buddy.

South Park is the best show on TV.

To be fair, I have seen parts of some episodes, including the much-lauded World of Warcraft episode. Straight up, I was mildly amused. And that's fine; humor is relative. You're well within your rights to believe that South Park continues to be on the cutting edge of humor and biting social commentary. You'd just be wrong, that's all.

Also: JUST KIDDING.

I'll admit I'm wrong and that South Park is still totally relevant and hilarious to some people. That doesn't mean I'm adding it to my DVR recording list, though. Or that I'll necessarily be excited about this game.

To all the South Park fans: what single recent episode could I download and watch that should change my mind? What's the pinnacle of South Park greatness these days?

NICK: I would suggest "Cartman Sucks" here is the description from wiki:

"Butters' father catches his son about to perform oral sex on Cartman and sends Butters to a Christian camp for "confused" children. Meanwhile, Cartman blames Kyle for stealing an incriminating photo of himself and Butters."

other episodes of note: "Guitar Queer-o" (its another video game episode!)

"Britney's New Look": The last episode to really shock me

and of course the 3 parter: "imagination land"

South Park is still great and most often relevant.
this game, however, will probably be neither.

best relevant episodes of the last 1 1/2 seasons:
- More Crap
- Imaginationland (even if it ran a little long)
- Canada on Strike

The show, as people have said, is still great.

Games based on shows, however, generally suck. I don't see how they will be able to do anything good with the licence and still make it an actual game, unless they do an old school point and click adventure game ala sam and max...

Nick, as a South Park lover, I couldn't disagree more on your opinions. While the last 1 1/2 seasons were hit or miss, as someone said before, when it hit, it hit hard

However I also disagree with most of the episodes people here have been recommending Try these gems from the past 4 seasons:

Stanley's Cup
Super Fun Time
Imaginationland Trilogy
Night of the Living Homeless
Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow
Free Willzyx
Cartman Sucks

Don't watch the Guitar hero or Britney Spears episodes. Those were pretty awful. The episodes I recommend are full of the satire that makes South Park more than relevant today.
