I hope you folks like adrenaline in your sports games, because 2K Sports has made sure to inject plenty of it into NHL 2K9. How so? The soundtrack, of course. With fourteen tracks -- many of them from old-school punk bands like NoFX and Bad Religion -- NHL 2K9 brings back memories of a simpler time, before emo was an entire culture (as opposed to a mere sub-genre of music).

What’s somewhat strange is that I received the post-jump press release (check it out for the full tracklist) announcing the songs today, but the game hit stores on Tuesday, September 9th. Weird. Releasing the game kinda lets the cat out of the bag, doesn’t it? Anyway, if you’re still on the fence between this game and NHL 09, you can check out the final trailer for NHL 2K9 above, but know that I’ll be doing a Destructoid review of NHL 09. (Aside: if you’re wondering which goal Rick Nash is referring to in the video, you need to see this. Start at the 27-second mark.)

Also, be sure to take a look at all our prior coverage of NHL 2K9: a Wii trailer, screenshots, and the debut trailer. You can pick up NHL 2K9 right now on PS3, 360, Wii, and PS2.

It will also be the first time that influential punk band Operation Ivy has ever licensed their music for inclusion in a video game.

"For NHL 2K9 we wanted to create an adrenaline-pumping soundtrack that will set the mood for the intensity of hockey," said Tim Rosa, 2K Sports’ director of brand and lifestyle marketing. "We have also licensed a few of the more popular hockey stadium songs, so when a player goes to the penalty box after a fight, gamers will hear tracks such as “Bad Boys” from Inner Circle or “Knocked Down” by Pennywise after a big hit, as they do in hockey stadiums across North America. For NHL 2K9 we have licensed a great collection of songs that complement the authenticity and spirit of the game."

NHL 2K9 is now available on retail store shelves in North America for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Wii™ home video game system from Nintendo, and PLAYSTATION®3 and PlayStation®2 computer entertainment systems. A free demo of NHL 2K9 is also available for download on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION®Network. The demo provides fans an opportunity to relive the excitement of this past season’s thrilling Stanley Cup™ Final in a brief three minute period as either the Pittsburgh Penguins or Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Happy they went with an old school Offspring song rather than their new shit. :)

NHL '94 got me interested in playing hockey, now I actually play in a league. Who says video games make you lazy. :)
