Soulcalibur IV gets balance patch, you have fewer excuses for losing photo

If you've been getting trounced in Namco Bandai's Soulcalibur IV regularly, it may not be because you're bad at the game. Why not blame it on balancing issues? You don't suck, people are being cheap!

A new patch is available for (at least) the Xbox 360 version of Soulcalibur IV that addreses some of these issues. It's an impressive list of changes, but perhaps only the most hardcore players will really notice. 8WayRun has put together a frightening list of tweaks, including details like "damage scaled down to 70 (before was 90)."

Honestly, I haven't played enough Soulcalibur IV to notice that frame-timing changes were made to character combos. But if you have, this may be the patch to level the playing field for you and your fellow competitors.

No word on the PlayStation 3 version of the update, but it should only be a matter of time before the speed of Darth Vader's "Imperial Storm Force Cannon" is tweaked. (Note: I totally made that up.)

Darth Vader's "Imperial Storm Force Cannon" is a piece of shit.

A beautifully named piece of shit, but it's still shit.

Based on 8wayrun's list. They buffed the Apprentice, he was overpowered anyway...pretty weird.

No changes to Taki, just what I wanted to see. My furry Grim Reaper Taki will destroy you all...when I get my 360 back. Ugh.

@Holytheline

If you like Soulcalibur games, then yes. It is.

"Soul Crushes are harder to pull off (moves generally take off less from the soul gauge)"

Those things are hard enough to do in the first place! What the hell.

"You can Just Impact throws."

I'm assuming this is for attack throws.

I haven't been playing this game a whole lot, so I guess these changes won't affect me too much. Gotta be honest, I haven't gotten my $60 worth yet.

I'm not sure I like all of these, but thats only because they made some of my fav. characters a little weaker. Oh well.

@Holytheline:

Yes, this is the first great SC since SC1.

Holy shit, a fighting game actually receives a balance adjusting patch. I thought this sort of thing never happened.

Meh. Just let me know when they decide to give us the rest of the custom character outfit parts and Vader (or Yoda for those other folks)

Yay! Wasn't sure if they'd be regularly patching for balance. I'm glad that they might take arcade updates into consideration for this. If the PS2 was updatable, it might have saved SCIII.

If they didn't make yoda taller then the game is still imbalanced :P

@Aurain: The apprentice isn't overpowered. He might seem that way, but that's just because the AI for him is boosted. He's actually pretty glitchy, and a lot of his attacks have broken hitboxes.

Anyway, I have mixed feelings about this patch. On the plus side, they got rid of some nasty glitches and infinites. Unfortunately, they mostly weakened characters who didn't need it, and didn't do much about the more overpowered ones.

I think he's referring to your comment about SC1 being the only other good game in the series.

As someone who has played the Soul Calibur games competitively, this kind of balancing patch is a godsend. While I fully understand that many don't give a crap when it comes to things like damage reduction and frames (which admittedly does get taken to an extreme sometimes), it's very nice that Namco/Bandai is addressing these issues to help level the playing field in more subtle ways.

Now if only online play could be smoother...

ALSO: Where on earth is that picture of Ivy from?

Holy shit, that Ivy is real. I couldn't even tell, from that picture. I had to look at the Flickr set. My mind is blown. Awesome cosplay.

This is what I get for not drinking enough coffee on a Friday. Oh well, that original pic is definitely my favorite of the bunch.

Meh, not like there's enough people to play it with. I haven't played it since the month the game came out because I have no one to play with, and the one person I would play it with got red-ringed, and he probably won't be able to play it when it comes back because he used a flashed Xbox and a flash copy of the game, so whatever.

Also, do want that Ivy in my house. Right now.

Or in my pants.
