That clip up there is some newly released footage for Namco-Bandai's Soul Calibur Legends, the adventure game offshoot of their very successful weapons-based fighting series. I don't think anyone should ever judge a game before they've actually played it, but I'm also a terrible liar, so I have to say I was quite underwhelmed by that clip.

It seem that the devs behind SC Legends tried their hardest to ape God of War, but were hamstrung by the higher-ups who forced them to put emphasis on the Soul Calibur characters. Fighting games allow for much more intimacy than adventure games, and when trying to recreate that feel in something like this, the entire thing seems disjointed; like a beautiful woman making out with a cardboard cutout of George Burns.

It remains to be seen if the Wiimote-enabled swordplay can save the title, but just based on that above footage *cue traditional gaming writer repetoire* the soul may have cooled quite considerably since its last outing.

Ick. I feel so dirty ...

@nicojay
I might miss the point of what you're saying, but there's 2 player whoring at the same time. The tag action is for single player I guess.

It's amazing to me that the game sometimes looks as good a Ninja Gaiden on the X-Box, then suddenly slips into Dreamcast looking territory.

All the same, I'm going to have to disagree with Nex when I say that for the first time I'm now sort of excited to play this game.

I like the camera staying behind the character at all times, reminds me of God Hand. And I like the tag outs, very Marvel VS Capcom.

Over all nothing about the game seems original, but it looks like it's borrowing from all the right places. And it's a 2 player Co-Op beat 'em up. How can it really go wrong?

That looked horrible. Especially the part where the giant smashed the ground with his fist only it looked like he just placed it there and then pink circles came out. But especially the part when Ivy kept doing the same move over and over to that dragon thing.

Terrible.

Well, slicing stone looked kinda neat.

But nothing really reacted to the fighters. Stone man (though he's made of stone) doesnt' even flinch when Mitsurugi's laying down his combo. I would completely accept that thing glowing red on each hit for no good reason, if it meant I had some feedback for actually doing something to him. Whole thing kinda looked like that.

Except slicing stone, which looked kinda neat.

I don't know what everyone's bitching about, it looks like fun to me. Not the best game I've ever seen, but if it uses the Wii remote in an interesting way instead of just replacing pressing a button with setting off an acceloromoter, then I could enjoy it. It doesn't look any worse than the Dynasty Warrior games, or Heavenly Sword gameplay wise. Just hack and slash.

It never ceases to amaze me though. People bitch about having one fighting game after another, one FPS after another, one racing game after another, but whenever a publisher goes in a new direction with a franchise, they get shat on for ruining a franchise that was "perfect" as it was.

You know who else thought trying a new genre with an established franchise was a bad idea? Hitler.

that's a bummer. in some ways reminds me of the MK spin off Sub Zero stories . This is SC in name only. I agree that the only thing that can help it is if the Wii controls are solid. The graphics and gameplay appear pretty meh to me.

It' s not that everyone is bitching about the new direction of the franchise. I think everyone would be very excited if they made a truly amazing SoulCalibur adventure game. It's just that the video was kind of uninspiring. And when company's make seemingly uninspired spin-offs of beloved titles like SoulCalibur, people get upset.

Weird, I've somehow never even heard of this particular game before now.

Looks like a slightly improved version of the Konquest mode from Mortal Kombat Armageddon. I kind of enjoyed the Konquest mode from MK:A though, so that's not really knocking this game.

This looks way better than Tekken Force mode! I can't wait to unlock it in Soul Calibur 4!

...what? This is a stand alone game you say? Wii exclusive? Son of a bitch!
