Is Namco Bandi trying to tell us something here with these Soul Calibur IV box arts? Is the PS3 the evil side and the Xbox 360 the good side? Who cares, they both look amazing. It works out really nicely too. Having Darth Vader accompanied by Nightmare and Ivy who are a couple of the evil characters from the game matches nicely on the normally black system. The same goes for Yoda who's accompanied by Siegfried and newcomer Hilde as the light characters on the normally white system. The box arts have popped up on GameStop's Web site but it isn't known for sure if these are the final versions. Hopefully it is as they're both fantastic. Plus, they're pretty similar to Soul Calibur 2's box art variations so these could very well be the final versions, hopefully. So the only question left to ask is which version are you getting: Sith or Jedi? [Via Kotaku]

It's true.
is Ivy evil again?
damn.
The star wars characters look lame.
Nightmare is friggin awesome, so is DV, but dam... no Yoda blows, oh well hope they add all characters to DLC and let players just buy them online. Honestly, I don't like this splitting characters per console.
btw, does this mean nada for the Wii? Last time I remember Gamecube getting Link, PS2 Spawn and Xbox a fiery guy. Man is 3rd party games for the Wii blowing that much?
I'm sorry, but I hate, hate, HATE this cover art! I know that I'm going to be labeled as just somebody who hates Star Wars , but I think it's the wrong idea to sell Soul Calibur IV on the strengths of what are essentially novelty characters. Should they be mentioned on the back of the box? Of course they should, I have no problem with that. But these covers indicate that Yoda and Darth Vader are a huge deal, which kind of turns me off of the game. For me Soul Calibur's selling point has nothing to do with Star Wars, and should have nothing to do with Star Wars.
I can't believe how much I hate this Star Wars shit.
Well, DefunctGamer, they are in line with the Soul Calibur II box-artwork, which featured the exclusive characters on each one.
Of course, even Spawn is a better fit for the series than the Star Wars characters, but this is definately not unprecedented.
Hmmm, I think this is pretty bad-ass. I really hope that Vader is downloadable for the 360 and Yoda is downloadable for the PS3 eventually.
I think it's one of the best things to happen in the world of video games in a while...... I've always thought to myself that Lucasarts should have given the rights to Namco to make a Star Wars fighting game based on the Soul Calibur engine. This is as close as I'll get to that dream I think.
I do agree that they're pushing this Star Wars thing a little bit too much, but think about how this will sell this game. I told some of my friends that Yoda was in SC4 and they went fucking crazy (in a good way). In fact, a pretty hand-drawn picture of Yoda on the cover of any game would attract at least one more buyer.
Why is the "related products" section under the article tell me to buy "That's So Raven" for the GBA?
oh wow, it's only $8.45 at amazon Marketplace
Oooo, awesome. I like how they've done this split box art thing. I hope that doesn't mean each character is console-specific. Nevertheless, that PS3 art is gorgeous. Almost makes me want to waste my money on that system.
FUCK! This box art makes me feel even less likely that the X360 version will get Darth vader in any way. Just make them both available to both NAMCO you BASTARDS!!
@Pendelton21
They've already confirmed that each system is console-specific. At first, at least, later the character that werent on the disc might be available as DLC.
I still can't get over how weird all this is.
Classy. Tho I can't tell if the covers are drawn or CG due to the lack of detail, both look epic for a game cover. Gotta love the duality, too.
Still think its a terrible idea
time to return to the stage of history and start saying your frenid is chep because he keeps using the same chacter all the time. BASTARD!!!!
Ooh, modest sweet lil' Hilde or sexy dominatrix Ivy?
The screens for this game are GORGEOUS, too.
Ivy is evil? Since when? Anyway, neat cover art. Though, you know what would be better than Ivy and Nightmare on the PS3 cover? Freaking Kratos. One can dream after all.
Eh they're okay. But damn it, I want this game so badly!
go sith/ps3
I like old Star Wars a lot and all, but to me those boxes look so damn cheesy with the Star Wars characters plastered on there. I suppose Namco paid good money to use 'em so they're going to pimp the fact that they're in there, but this is way goofier than Link & co being thrown in part II...
That's so awesome. I don't have a PS3 but I want Darth Vader :(
@clockwork
the chance that Yoda/PS3 and Vader/360 are DLC later down the line is pretty high.
I don't know, they just seem... off to me. I was a big fan of the last few previous box arts... this, not so much.
I'll probably still pick it up though day one, just like the other SCs.
Dark Side FTW!
Damn good point, covah.
Well, at first I was very skeptical as to if these were real due to the fact that the Ivy art on the front is from SC3 concept drawings.
Now though, I heard an interesting theory that Ivy is only there as a place-holder for the other as-of-yet-unannounced new character. And if I'm on the right track, the other new character is going to be EVIL!! My hope, a dual hook-sword weilder that's all crazy looking like Kabal from MK.
That would also explain the whole "Ivy's evil?!" thing that's going around since she's not going to be on the finalized "evil" cover.
Oh, Darth for sure.
It's cool that they are included in the game, but putting the star wars characters on the cover is just plain stupid.
not true chao, I'd say that decision will pay for itself in the number of Star Wars fans (those who aren't DTOID frequenters or hardcore gamers) who buy the game based purely on the fact that they can play as Darth Vader/Yoda
besides, it worked pretty well for Soul Calibur 2 with Spawn, Link and Heihachi
@Dubbya, actually, I think in SC2's case, it paid off the most for the GC version. That is the version that almost everybody wanted. I mean, c'mon it was the first "next generation" rendition of Adult Link in a time when GC owners only knew about Wind Waker.
@ Microsoft Zealots who love Darth Vader (only):
I looks like Ivy is not a 3D model but a from concept art or something.
Not sure about Nightmare or Darth Vader though...
If only Ivy is art and others are 3D models... Well it has to be fake. If not... 360 has 3D models and PS3 has Concept Art on the cover?
Maybe I'm getting nick picky over nothing special?
Yea im not really diggin the box art. Looks kinda cheesy to me. Really the only thing that im wondering is whether or not theres going to be more than 3 new characters, well 2 for each console. It would be kinda dissapointing if all i have to work with is yoda and that new chick.
Sooo... much... fail...
With the damn SW characters on the front. It just looks retarded.
And Wii got Soul Calibur Legends, oh dear.
I'm surprised they'd decide to theme the cover art entirely around the novelty characters. Perhaps there is some corporate monkey whispering horrid phrases such as "casual appeal" around the offices of NB?
Nightmare looks sick and Ivy looks smokin' (Even Vader doesn't look bad himself) -- I think I'm going to join the dark side on this one.
awesome, can't wait till respective owners have to pony up extra cash to get both yoda and vader as downloadable content because god knows $59.99 is not enough $$$ to get you both....weasels.
Vader's my only option. Although if I'm going to pay $60 for a fighting game, I'll probably go with Ryu.
hell yeah darth vader!!! definitely getting the PS3 version... also i don't have a 360...
I'm getting the wii version, you know, the one with JarJar Binks as the special character.
@Max that is a woderful point. I too think I'll wait for the new Street Fighter
Am I the only ones not digging the Star Wars characters on the front of the box?
Go Yoda!. >.>
That box art is DISGUSTING...specially the 360 version.
If I had this game, I would get some liquid paper or whatever to erase Yoda's stupid face off it. =/
Both boxes look stupid and I hate how these characters are in the game. Let Star Wars have another fighting game, don't add them into SC for christ sakes.
Letting the guest stars take point?? I really hope this isn't the final art.
If it wasn't dumb enough that they put Star Wars in my Soul Calibur, they had to put it on the cover, too?
Lame.
too bad we can't play vader versus yoda ingame.
Because Soul Calibur didnt sell a copy until they insulted its fans by putting Star Wars characters on the cover...
Guess everyone has forgotten about these.
I'd say these are final or near-final, and I'd also say that Namco-Bandai doesn't care what you whiners think. That Star Wars peanut butter is going into that Soul Calibur chocolate whether you like it or not.
It be nice if they did a multi-platform re-release of SC3!
My biggest concern isn't who's in what version, it's what version of the characters we will get -- the Vader and Yoda from Ep. 4-6 (original trilogy) or the excessive CGI Vader and Yoda from Ep. 1-3?
Be afraid.
Be very afraid.
@ Mister Disco
Thank you, you saved me the trouble of having to hunt down box art pics.
Box art's nice and everything, but I'm really not intending on sitting in front of my TV staring at the case for hours on end.
Awesome boxart!
Box art's nice and everything, but I'm really not intending on sitting in front of my TV staring at the case for hours on end.
yeah indeed, the people whining about the box art should really get a grip :-)
whoa that's pretty cool.
I'm excited about hilde. spears are the ultimate martial weapon of the ancient battlefield. fucks swords.
I actually like the 360 cover. I think the white looks good but I'm not a fan of the PS3 cover. I just think it looks ugly.
What the hell? How long has Ivy had a face?
The 360 one would be perfect without Yoda, (I know...Bandwagon, but not because I don't like Star Wars in my Soul Calibur, but because the pic of him doesn't fit. The PS3 case is the perfect example of how to blend in the character.
PS3 case > 360 case. Which in turn obviously means PS3 > 360 in gameplay, consolewise, saleability of console. Yes, That's sarcasm.
I think the PS3 art looks better, but I'm fine with the 360 art, which is what I'll probably be getting. For a moment, I considered buying both, but then I remembered that I never did that for SCII and decided on 360.
You should’ve titled this post “Something something Dark Side”.
SPOILERS:
That is Ivy art from SC3. FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE
Sony has always been the evil side since they started game consoles in 1994,
Who wouldnt push the SW characters in the game, it sells millions and its awesome! Get down from yur purch people!
Just shame i cant battle Yoda and Vader!!
Personally, I like the SW additions, as long as they won't be used as a main point in the game, just new characters...
If this game kicks ass (which it likely will) it will be the last straw and i will finally force myself to buy a 360.
And thereby starving to death as i wont have the cash to feed myself.
Damn you university fees!
My copy of Game Informer tells me both characters will be availible as DLC in the near future of this release.
Nice. I 'll be pikcing up the 360 version becasue I only own a 360 but I'm also interested in how Yoda will work.
I'm going with Sith, since I have a PS3. But I would really have loved to play as Yoda, Darth Vader is cool and all, but Yoda flippin around everyone is so cool looking.
