Sony: Xbox 360 is too expensive, Wii lacks features photo

While it's somewhat hilarious for Sony to accuse anybody of having an expensive console, the PS3 manufacturer has come out fighting anyway, deflecting its own criticism by attacking both the Xbox 360 and the Wii. All of this trash talking would be much better if the companies were playing basketball at the same time.

"The Xbox 360 requires additional money, multiple upgrades and additional external devices, putting a burden on the wallet and add[ing] clutter to the entertainment center," claimed Sony. "The PS3 is the perfect example of a product featuring superior technology and a sophisticated design creating an ideal all-in-one entertainment product."

What Sony says is actually rather true, but unfortunately for the PS3, consumers will see on the shelves a $400 console next to a $200 console. A customer only really cares about what they see in front of them, and a vast majority of them probably don't even know about the important Hard Drive or other features. Also, considering I needed to buy an HDMI cable for my PS3 not to have terrible visuals, while the 360 still looks fine without one, I don't think Sony can fully have the upper hand here.

Sony also had some words to say to the Wii: "The Wii’s lack of enhanced features comes at the expense of a comprehensive entertainment solution. So as PS3 continues to evolve without the need for additional parts or expenses, expect the competition to continue peddling add-ons in an effort to keep up with the Jones'."

Yes, imagine a company peddling add-ons in a sad effort to try and keep up with a more dominant console. Sony would never do that, right?

In other news, Home

PlayStation Home.

Jim Sterling beating a dead horse and wanting to get a couple more hits to his stories.

1) This is hardly news.

2) Wheres the source of this story? I would really like to know when/where Sony, who has been quiet for some time due to internal struggle and general fuck ups, still have the time/PR to say such 2006 comments.

Jim you fail at journalism and pretty much life itself.

PD I miss the Workman and Nex. Not so much one that left long time ago that had prison tats of his forearms... what was his name... hmmm...

sorry, seamonkey420...but backwards compatibility is a valid point if Sony wants to use all their talking points. Sure you dont need BC, but in that same essence you dont need blu-ray or wireless internet.

As far as "out of the box, playing games," the 360 is the cheapest console hands down.

I hate to say Microsoft was smart here, but they were. Taking out all the huge multimedia components that jacked up the price of a PS3 was a brilliant move.

I am a hardcore gamer....yes I paid for the wireless adapter, yes I pay for xbox live, yes, I even paid for rechargeable batteries. The thing is, I chose to get these component over time without having to throw down $500 at one time. Most gamers will never need any of it

That is why the 360 is ass raping the PS3 this generation

I agree with Sony about the 360 price thing, and I was just talking about that with a friend. But they really need to stop coming out and saying "Oh, we're better than everyone else." Microsoft does that too, but I think Sony does it much more often. I love my PS3, but let's be professional here.

As for their comments about the Wii... Let's see if the people at Nintendo agree while they're sleeping on their beds made of cash.

About fucking time Sony stopped crying and got out of the corner.I've been saying this for AGES. Specially with an annual subscription for XBL and a proprietary wireless adapter that costs $100 fucking dollars the 360 is MUCH more expensive. It also breaks alot more.

Sony should just take out the built in wireless and drop the price. They've been too good to their customers on what they're getting but no one cares because they've been brainwashed by MS advertising.

BTW, I have all consoles and PC and play them all regularly. Well, maybe not my wii.

To the people saying that 360 has better games: that argument was true 2 years ago. My friend was making that argument and I pointed out that every single 360 game he had was on the ps3. The only exclusives I have are Dead Rising, Lost Odyssey and Earth Defense Force. And dead rising soon won't be an exclusive.

Sony's right on this one, the ps3 is a better complete package, free online, bluray, built in wifi (nice to have lots of people actually need it), and controllers that don't need batteries, or rechargeable battery packs. People use the price point to rag on the ps3 but it's clearly not true.

No games? You people still saying that? Come on now, not only does the ps3 have a year behind 360 since launch, but has many, very awesome games, exclusive and not exclusive across the board. It's time to stop making excuses to justify your purchase, be a true gamer and stop judging consoles, just enjoy the games.

Just to clarify, some fool made the gross exaggeration that the PS3 out-of-box USB cable is 3 feet long...it's 10 feet long.

Our 4th 360 RROD'd on us yesterday, which means in the time we have had our PS3, we have gone through THREE FUCKING XBOXES! We don't even put a hundredth of the time on the piece of shit xbox that we do on the PS3! That's bullshit Microsoft.

Another friend of mine just bought a arcade 360 the other day. It came with one controller, and no memory solution whatsoever. Luckily for him though since xboxes are giant steaming piles of shit we had a couple extra 20gb hard drives. You may not need wireless, but you DO NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED some sort of storage device, and the shit costs 100 fucking dollars, for 60gb! THATS BULLSHIT MICROSOFT!

Not to mention the only games aside from GH/RB that are worth playing online (generally) are dirty fucking lame pew pew games that attract the trash of our species (see L4D, Haloz, Gearz). Not to call you all trash, but the people you complain about are.

And lastly, yeah, I refuse to pay twice for the internet. It's not like MS needs to make people pay for their service, they could totally do it for free and have it suck just as much, but they make you pay for it because you were trying to be "thrifty" and fifty bucks is nothin', right? That's an ounce of shwag that could be ruining my lungs!

I have all 3 consoles, and all 3 of them are fucking expensive if you want to fully outfit them...

I've got 4 controllers for each plus a wheel for PS3 and a wheel for 360, so I sank close to 1000 € into peripherals...

( G25 for PS3, Xbox racing wheel, 3 extra wireless PS3 dualshocks, 3 extra wireless 360-controllers, 3 extra wiimotes, 3 extra nun-chucks, 2 gunholders for wii, wii-classic-controller, wireless headset for 360 and one for PS3 etc etc )

they're all HUGELY expensive...

@Shirley

You are correct about many games sharing consoles, but the lion's share of those games are superior on the 360 builds. Only a couple have faired better on the PS3 and the difference in graphic fidelity is not even as great as comparisons between the XBOX and PS2.

I am very familiar with the argument that were multi-plat games developed with the PS3 as the lead format the PS3 versions would have an advantage (slight advantage but an advantage nonetheless). But this argument does not reflect reality due to too few PS3 Multi-plat games being purchased by PS3 owners. If PS3 users bought more games maybe the trend would change. But, the last time I checked console attach rates (console owners actually buying games); the 360 purchases dwarfed those of the PS3 with mutiplat titles doing significantly better on the 360. I won't debate whether this trend is fair or right...it simply is what it is.

Now, as a “gamer first” (not a hipster who is more into techy gadgets than he or she is into actual games) what is the more logical choice for me? Do I go with the jack of all trades that was developed with the concept of cross-marketing other products (this was Sony's announced business plan "media hub/bluray" when they prepared to launch the PS3) to me as the priority? Mind you a "jack" that due to its business plan has put itself in the position where many of the titles it shares with a competing system are inferior, more costly to develop, and in large part unsupported by its own install base. Or do I choose the system that most demonstrates that games come first? M$ crafted a system aimed at making the process of development/programming simple and carried that same thought over to game players with an easy to use online service. The choice was/is simple. Spin will not save Sony, attention to games and gamers will.

@Obshaky:

"The only exclusives I HAVE". Castle Crashers isn't that fun (friend has it, I much preferred you'd said Braid, but that's gonna come to ps3 as well), L4D is NOT exclusive, I have it on PC. And Halo 3 is an over rated pile of ass. You could have gone for GoW and maybe had a decent argument. But it still doesn't compare to my ps3 exclusives: LBP, Valkyria Chronicles, MGS4, Echochrome and soon to be Killzone 2.

I gots:
Xb360 Pro (Came with 20g)(I want to say $300)
120 gig harddrive off of some amazon deal for like $120
HD DVD Player [free Heroes season 1] for $180
3 HD DVDs left (Traded the rest for blu-rays, but 2 were free for buying the player), and I got Big Lebowski used for $20
Wireless Network adapter $100
Extra controller, two rechargable batteries, and plug-in charger- around $90
Wireless headset $60
Memory card (Has my Gamertag on it, so I can leech achievements if I go over a friends house) ( I think it was $55ish
I have a year of live, but a $50 a year bill doesn't hurt so $50
I think Im forgetting something or another..but Im up to almost $1000.

PS3-
got the 80gig for $400
HDMI cable, blu-ray and remote for $50 (I lost my mono-price one :-[)
around 12 blu-rays purchased- some for being on sale, others not...(Including Lost season 4) so I think I spent around $200 on that.
So 650 in that. But the main difference is this

360 games owned-29
PS3 games owned-5

So because I Spent more on the 360, it isn't as good of a value? I'm playing MGS4 more than anything right now, because I haven't yet and it's a fantastic game. But I absolutely love How everything I listed for the 360 is pretty much optional. But plain and simple- the 360 has more games. I feel like Sony and Microsoft switched consoles this generation. Where PS2 was my main system, and I just used the Xbox for it's features (XBL and it's hard drive). I usually got multi-platform games on the PS2, and just the xbox exclusives on its system. then my ps2 died on me and I just went with the xbox because it didnt die...on...me. Maybe they did just switched sides >.<

does everybody have wi-fi? i'm one of the 3 houses on my neighbourhood with it. password protected :p

does everybody have blu-ray? again, out of my many friends and aquaintances, i'm the only one with 1080p to even notice the blu-ray difference.

is the ps3 HD ready out of the box [this is really perplexing since the ps3 touts itself as a player of blu-ray movies which require HD accesories]? no and there are certainly many sad saps who've purchased the overpriced cables.

is there a bluetooth headset? no. can it use any bluetooth headset? yes. and any wired cell phone headset work with the 360? yes.

it appears here sony either has the same old problem of telling the consumer what they want rather than listening to the consumer; they're assuming we all have the same wants. the 360 on the other hand is like a barebone system where the consumer CHOOSEs what to add on. and no, the HDD is not necessary but extremely useful. if say someone just wants to play rockband for the office/bar/waiting room, then the consumer is just going to get the arcade system.

that being said, sony is being very decietful in choosing the arcade model to compare since if they compared it with the pro-model, they'd be caught with their pants down

you can get HDMI cables for 5$ so that's hardly a cost consideration and games meant to be played in HD look bad on the 360 as well if you are playing them in standard definition
