SCEA bigwig Peter Dille has been giving the Blogocube a lot of mileage with his Gamasutra interview, coming up with plenty of quotes that can be extracted and screamed about without context. Here's another one, with Dille offering a few stolen words from Jack Tretton and attempting to quantify the statement.
"Yeah, I don't want to steal [CEO] Jack [Tretton]'s quote, but he's fond of saying: "Microsoft owns the office; Sony owns the living room; and Wii owns the closet." And that's an aggressive, probably quotable line," says Dille, providing an aggressive line that we just quoted. "But the point he's trying to make is something that we find backed up in a lot of our research and focus groups: that people who are playing the Wii bring it out when friends come over and then put it back away — that the console that stays connected to the TV is a different system."
So there you have it. The PS3 is the best system because Sony said so. Do we actually believe this, or is Sony doing the unthinkable and making stuff up so that the PS3 sounds better? I think the problem is that if Sony sets up a focus group, it will probably be made up of people who play the PS3, and let's face it, people who play the PS3 are not indicative of the general public. I'm sure Sony has the results to back up the "Wii doesn't get played argument," but if that's just coming from traditional gamer demographics, that's not reliable fact.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
That bloody bat has bewitched you, hasn't she!
These guys are paid to say this bullshit. It's a trifecta of lies and tomfoolery.
And I'm not sure which is worse, gay guys tonguing or MLP softcore. I mean, it's lesbionic action, which should be totally hot.
And yet...
*Shudder...*
I commend you on a new level of depravity Mr Sterling!

Yes, Microsoft "owns the office", but that kind of ignores their gaming unit while pretending that their personal computer software unit is their only functioning unit. Both Sony's and Microsoft's entertainment units are not exactly profitable at the moment and rely on these other businesses in their parent corporations to survive.
The Wii (until I gave it to my folks) was only brought out for the occassional play, whereas the PS3 is always HDMI'd to my LCD and runs PlayTV, all my Browsing, all my Music, Blu-rays and all of my gaming. (Except the away from home gaming, the PSP takes care of that!)
So, uh, yeah, Sony OWNS my living room, me, my fiance and our housemate all use it for any media based entertainment in the living room.
I imagine that most (read again MOST - not all, you don't need to tell me if you're not in that MOST) X360's are in bedrooms.
Sony - Living Room
Wii - Closet
X360 - Bedroom
Generally (again, I'm not talking about YOU personally I'm talking generally) most 360 users are Chilluns playing in bedrooms, so their parents can't hear them swearing at each other on Live. That's just what happens when your console is cheap enough for welfare parents to buy their kids. More power to them, MS are raking in cash from that market.
I think this Sony comment is bang on the money.
I mean look at Wii games sales! Sell a tonne of Wii's but don't sell many games. a Huge amount of Wii's are sitting there with Wii Sports still in the drive. Even my folks only turn it on when the nephews come round, for a bit of Wii Sports.
Sell not so many PS3's but 90% of users buy new games each month.
Which one is being played most I wonder?????
The PS2 I believe.
Which doesn't invalidate the "quote" but I think it's funny how much he's saying Playstation 3 and the fact that Sony are still pumping out PS2's seems to be in the past or in a different reality for the duration of this interview.
Sony really needs to get in gear and start thinking about market share For The PS3(!) instead of the "Grab, Greed & Go" strategy.
I have mates with 360's in their bedrooms and mates on welfare who got their kids 360's for xmas - that fucking irritates me. I do not give up 25%+ of my wages for you to spend it on 360's for your kids!!! (but that's another rant) FOOD STAMPS REQUIRED!
The 4 mates I have with PS3's all have them in their living room, always hooked up, I'm the only one with Play TV but i don't have Sky or a PVR. They all use them for music and blu-rays etc.
The 5 or 6 people I know with Wii's barely ever use them. Non-gamers for lack of a better term.
You wanna try your hand at those software numbers again? I think you maybe be a little bit mistaken.
My PS3 owns my living room and bedroom other than our HD DVR, whereas my 360 typically sits quietly aside, sticking out like a sore thumb because it's the only white thing in the vicinity. My Rockband drums and guitars act as my Wii replacement, coming out entirely when friends are over, otherwise being used occasionally.
Sexual chocolate, you are a cunt.
"I mentioned earlier that Shadow of the Colossus didn't break a million, but it still performed extremely well."
Why do you sound so upset? im glad that the people on welfare are able to buy an xbox for their children..hooray gatesfoundation. I mean they are spending it on their kids, to have fun, and feel normal. Poor people/ people unemployed because of the economic crisis don't just deserve food staples and a roof over their home as you insinuate...they deserve some leisure too! be it Xbox or Wii, but i guess a PS3, since you own one is way too extravagant for the likes of them...
A colleague of mine today said "my son's X360 died at the weekend, but i'm not going to bother replacing it, he's still got his PS2"
As far as sony is concerned, they have 3 top of the pile consoles still pushing revenue their way. The PS2 is proving their 10 year promise.
In 8 years time we will be sitting here, going "i wish Sony would quit supporting the PS3 and concentrate on the PS4!"
It's just their way and it's a pretty smart way to go. By the time they stop supporting the PS2 the PS3 will be in a much better place for "converts" than it was at launch.
Still didn't say it wasn't successful. Sue me for making the mistake of not tracking that ONE game. So aside from that ONE game, let me know what other mistakes I made. Please, go on. I'd like to know what other information of mine is faulty.
I know of at least 10 people who are better off not working than they would be if they got a job, and i pay so much fucking tax that i struggle to afford the extortionat fuel prices to get to work and back.
Meanwhile these people are the same people you see in the pub every weekend, and as i say, spending MY money on consoles for their kids. While I had to borrow money to buy my PS3. it's just not right.
I'm all about giving up a portion of my earnings to feed and clothe their kids but NOT for them to spend on ANYTHING considered a luxury.
They don't live a normal life, they don't deserve what the rest of us think of as normality.
These are the same kids they had specially to get a council flat or perhaps the 2nd and 3rd kids were so they would be given a bigger house.
it cuts me pretty fucking deep when i see my annual Tax paid, knowing that I've been to hospital once, i pay for my own dental care and I generally get NOTHING from that.
Oh and yes i do suck Sony cock - they fucking deserve it, they treat me fucking well. They sell me a top of the range peice of equipment at a loss, they secure all the BEST games and avoid putting shit money grabbing shovelware in front of me. My Blu-ray drive died last week, well out of warrantee, one quick call to Sony and they've fixed it FOR FREE.
So yeah, they deserve a fucking blowie.
Ok, I'm going to calm down, because I've gone a bit wonky, but you really riled me with your classist 'Xbox children with welfare parents' bullshit.
Sorry for using the C-word - maybe I went too far.
Don't forget to lick your lips, once you've finished zipping up. peas.
I keep all three of them in my living room, and I work from my home/office. It's also true that my entire house is a Nintendo closet :)
i work every day and have a decent job, and i started at the bottom and worked my way to where i am. i could afford to buy a PS3 without credit (was only 4 month catalogue credit) if it wasn't for the fact that I pay so much tax - which rarely get's spent on anything I use. Hell i could buy one with 1 months income tax payment!
- On a note of borrowing - The current economic problems are caused by people borrowing what they can't pay back, not by people borrowing short term and making all of their payments. Google "toxic debt"
I chose the most expensive console because I didn't want to have to buy another one every year! x360 is a false economy. Plus i need WiFi, charging controllers and didn't want to have to pay for a service which should be a given on any modern console. you know getting a 360 to standard PS3 spec actually costs MOAR!? - Not to mention the 320gig HDD I got for £50, rather than a "special" 120gb Microsoft one for over £100. Fuck that.
That and the fact that I had the foresight to see that DVD is the past and Blu-ray is the future (i held out till the HD DVD battle was done). Had HD DVD won that one I would probably be in a different position right now.
I didn't get it because it was expensive. i got it because I see the value in it.
Sony have never done anything but good by me. The treat me like I'd like every company to treat it's consumers. A rare occurence in todays world. For that they get my gaming cash and they have me ranting in their favour on sites like this.
I have total sympathy for anyone who's not working because of the current economy, but those who CHOOSE not to work can go fuck themselves, in the ass, with a fucking razorblade laden cactus.
Also I think Mr Brown and Mr Bush have a lot more to answer for on the topic of borrowing than i do for borrowing a couple of hundred quid for a console.
Phew - rant over.
Funny how that logic works. So, if I prove you wrong once, does that mean I can safely ignore everything you say from here on out?
I disagree on Blu-ray, though. I think it's potentially doomed. It's only real use will be on the PS3, or should another games console take it up (incidently, I think it's a great medium for gamers, because the extra storage is a real benefit, not just a cosmetic one). I don't know anybody who uses it in a non-gaming capacity. Maybe I'm wrong, and the future is Blu-ray, but the future just took a great big economical stab in the arse, with a fucking razorblade laden cactus. Not exactly the perfect conditions for a new, more expensive medium, that is replacing something which most people don't actually need to replace.
Oh, and Xbox live is fucking awesome, and I have no issue paying 3 pounds a month to have that service; probably the best online gaming provider. Hell, my mobile costs me 40 per month and gives not even the teensiest fraction of pleasure that I get from Xbox live. But yes, the RROD was an issue, a big issue, but it's testament to just how damned good the machine is that we put up with it. But you eat your toast, and I'll eat mine, and I'll try not to get upset by your ramblings...
I like how they dismiss the 360 entirely. Maybe they'll even do an ad a lá PC & Mac.
Thats a good point. The Xbox 360 may have the largest library of games at the moment, including many good titles, but the hardware is an issue, as well as the subscription based online service (Nintendo WFC and PSN are free.)
I would have considered getting a PS3 for the good hardware and currently decent catalogue of games, but a ~£300 asking price is a bit much for me.
Though the xbox isn't plugged up to the TV at the mo either, cause it's buggered.
"Yeah, who the hell keeps a Wii in the closet? I keep all both my Xbox and my Wii on my entertainment center. Xbox plugs into the HDMI and the Wii into the AV... PS3... Still haven't been dumb enough to drop $400 for a blue-ray player."
What this man said. Someone give him a prize for being the most coherent and intelligent post in this whole thread.
