Outspoken Sony UK man David Reeves is all about the hardware. Making a thinly veiled swipe at Microsoft and the Xbox 360, Reeves has stated that "shoddy" machinery is not how this market grows. It's all about quality electronics.
"... Another thing we have committed to for supporting market growth is putting out quality hardware -- you don't grow the market by putting out shoddy machines," he boasts. "So we try to make sure that PS3s have a failure rate of just two to three percent, which is very low by industry standards."
To be fair, Reeves isn't one to just rag on the competition, praising Nintendo for having "only done good things" and even Microsoft for bringing down its prices and building online "in a meaningful way." Classy man. But he still thinks the high powered hardware of the PS3 is the way to go.
In a way, he's right to say what he says. At least compared to the Xbox 360 as a machine, the PlayStation 3 is magnificent. We just installed one here last night and I love it. However, Sony has sat back and beamed about its hardware for two years while doing very little else. I think the downfall of Sega and even Nintendo in the past went to show that hardware is NOT how you get ahead in this market, it's software.
As the company that developed the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, you'd think Sony would understand how important a strong, varied and well publicized library would be. The PS3 has games, this is true, but nobody knows it -- because Sony won't shut up about the hardware.
My PS3 is awesome though, I don't have to bring it to where my internet is to download stuff and play online. Keep it in my room and never leave!
The first thing a company should do is make sure their hardware is top notch. Only then they should sell games. Sony sold me a shitload of games for a device that actually works.
Really? How about all of the broken PS2s you twat. PS2s were just as bad as the Xbox 360s are now with the shitty hardware.
Luckily, my 360 hasn't RRoD yet.
To be fair, these consoles each lead in the following areas
Sony - Hardware
Microsoft - Software
Nintendo - Marketing
This generation is full of hiccups, including the following:
Sony - Software(System OS, Launch Library), Marketing
Microsoft - Hardware(Reliability), Marketing(The poorly executed casual focus of recent)
Nintendo - Hardware(Console capabilities), Software(Game Library)
;)
Seriously, the bastard weighs a ton, I think sony is just behind Nintendo when it comes to hardware reliability this generation, good for them.
Am I wrong on this? Just seems strange to be throwing stones from a glass house, but then again, I guess there is always a dependence on short memories.
And while we are at it...
My NES still works, my SuperNES, still works, my N64 still works, my GameCube still works, my Wii still works, my GameBoy still works, my GameBoyColor still works, my GameBoyAdvance still works, my GameBoy SP still works, and my DS still works.
I am on my FIFTH 360 and it still freezes all the time.
one thing that did come to mind when i saw the headline was when I went to Target I saw this...
What a way to display the 360 during the holidays lolz Target FAIL....
Why does everyone pick on Sony's software when the biggest loser for software for 3 cycles in a row has been Nintendo. N64 had about 25 decent games, but PS1 had over 100. Gamecube had maybe 20 good games, and we all know how many hundreds of good games are out on the PS2. PS3 already has, imo, 40+ great games to own...Wii doesn't even have 10 that interest me. If you want to complain about software, complain to Nintendo...they've been screwing people for years. Yea, the x360 has a lot of hardware problems...but at least it has games worth playing!
Common Wii owner response: "OH, BUT THE WII IS THE BEST! IT HAS MARIO, SUPERSMASH, METROID, AND ZELDA!!!"
...yea...so did the last two consoles of nintendo. Give us something new Nintendo...not cruddy family part games.
I really dislike the fact that we, gamers, have to BEG publishers ourselves to add 1080i/p support to games and then the majority of these titles just float on by without any acknowledgment that the game looks like ass on older 1080i only sets.
And I know EVERY PS3 game has the capability to be patched because it's been done. UT3 did it, Burnout Paradise did it, Uncharted did it... But every game I want to consider buying on the PS3 has to be weighed against whether or not there will be 1080i support or not vs if I really want the game that badly.
I'm no 360 fanboy. I had to send my machine in due to the RROD, but c'mon.
I was wondering when someone would bring that up. And besides, Sony should know by now that superior hardware doesn't necessarily equel superior sales -- just look at the Xbox and PS2 for starters.
Also, the DRE's weren't actually "broken" machines. The only problem was a lens that gets dirty and out of alignment. I STILL have a working day of launch PS2 because I opened it up myself and simply cleaned the optical lens a couple of times. And I've done this with several other peoples' PS2's with the same good results.
I know so many people who just threw theres away when it stop working when they were only 15 minutes away from a fixed system. I mean, seriously, if it's a doorstop now, what harm is there to opening it up and cleaning that sucker out?
RROD is a frickin BRICKED machine (sometimes right out of the box) due to crap hardware, and there's no excuse for that. At least Sony's PS2 error was just a result of long term use (no way to really see it coming) and could be fixed VERY easily.
hell My nes and VCS2600 still work for realz
The DREs the PS2 had are fixable with a q-tip, rubbing alcohol, screw driver, and 5 minutes of time. The PS2 just gets dusty.
The 360 on the other hand is a genuine piece of shit. The GPU melts off the board? The console can scratch disks even in a perfectly stable position while not moved (Yes I've had this happen)? DREs are no where near as bad as a console eatting a $60 game you can no longer find.
I still have my original PS2. My cousin still has his original PS2. He is however on his 5th fucking 360. Not 2 or 3 but 5.
Sony has much better hardware than microsoft. Nintendo has traditionally had the best hardware but I've found the Wii a bit below their usual standards (I've been through 3 defective...).
PSTRIPLE GOT GAME.
360 has a solid games library and online I'm quite happy to pay for.
And the PS3 has great hardware (though in all honesty I prefer the 360s controller except for its crappy D-pad), blue ray and a pretty okay games library.
I've never taken a loss on any 360 I've owned. So, me buying multiple 360's is more like managing inventory. My system RROD back in January, I bought/returned an arcade unit until the new one came back from repair. When that one's RF unit died in June, I sold it for $250 with a spare wired controller and bought a 60GB on a price match for $299. And when you contrast that with the $115 in MS Points that MS has refunded me through my multiple RROD failures, it balances itself out.
Also, I'll have you know my HDTV is a 60" set, and not cheap to replace of similar size and picture quality for properly scaled HD content.
Once this TV genuinely breaks down and ceases working, I will replace it, but in the meantime, it's a real problem that Sony won't properly address and asshat comments like "Buy a new TV" aren't a solution to their problem.
And it should be Sony that fixes it.
NOT ME.
Bullshit. I worked at a videogame store and we saw dozens of PS2s broken a week after about the first year. Those lens were pieces of shit.
Don't forget all the damn problems with the PSX. Lid issues, overheating, having to turn it on it's side or upside down to get it to play games.
Sony has zero track record prior to the PS3 of a stable console.
Even the PSP was plagued with dead pixels, dust in the screen, drive read errors/eject issues, crap battery life.
I second that thought.
My Intellivision resets if it even gets slightly bumped. Mattel sucks!
Colecovision is the wiNNz0R!
Why the fuck is anyone bringing up the PS2? Way to talk about last generation idiots.
If you think a 1080p set is the fix, then you pony up the cash and in trade you can have my old set and you can do whatever you want with this "archaic" 1080 capable set.
If not back the hell off because it IS a flaw since they do have proper upscaling for DVD support that they added in through software, but still ignore the games.
I almost need two hands to count how many fucking 360s I went through before I decided to give up! I figured it wasn't worth the hassle, I have a buddy with one so if they put out a game I REALLY want I just play it there, he does the same with my PS3 so it works. (of course hes on his 2nd and counting)
And my wii broke once. But since I hardly use it, that doesn't mean much.
I think bringing up PS2 problems (which I never had) will not make the RROD go away. And I HONESTLY doubt that the PS2 problem was worse than the 360, but whatever. Maybe it was and no one talked about it. I don't remember it.
I just don't understand why anyone who owns a 360 and has to live in fear of the ominous RROD would make excuses for Microsoft. YOU"RE THE ONES WHO SHOULD BE PISSED! You don't hear the PS3 folks keeping quiet, we bitched about the XMB and they fixed it, we bitched about no games and look how the library has grown, LBP is on like it's 4th update and theyve fixed the search feature, trophies. You have to be vocal to make change.
If you're worried about the "credentials" of the system for which you are a fanboy, complain anonymously. You won't lose your fanboy card then.
Sony is one to talk. Yes, the Ps3 is a fine machine with a low failure rate, but they seem to have forgotten about the issues with the PS2. Maybe they just don't want to remember.
Nintendo has been the only one, based on my experience with consoles, who has managed to live up to its status as a reliable and impressive console manufacturer. Yeah, the Nes had some issues and the orignial DS looked like crap, but the rest of their consoles were reliable and of good quality. I never once had to contact Nintendo's repair service for all the years that I have been a gamer since the days of the Nes.
Microsoft has a lot to be proud of, but the quality of its hardware is obviously not part of it.
even 700mb movies look very good on the biggest screen ("Let the right one In"). Now my friends bought batman dvd, I told them to come watch it at home cuz I had it on blu. They couldn't believe the amount of detail they were seeing on peoples faces, wall textures. They have a 360 elite and watched it on their big screen TV and noticed the big difference. They told me all of this, not me making it up.
but back on topic. Yea Sony had PS2 problems, but at least Sony took responsible and took care of most people with this problem. Microsoft you get charged or screwed for their shitty hardware in general. Big difference. Yes some of you might get lucky like EDS that got some free XBL games and a month of xbl, but thats a lucky 1% out of 15 million.
How can all of you compare a faulty dvd drive on the PS2 vs a faulty 360 system/faulty drive/faulty chip/faulty HDD/broken discs?
Seriously. Just drop that ps2 argument cuz its no were at the horrible level as the 360.
My PS2 on the other hand, lasted about 4 years(i think) before the stupid drive gouged a MASSIVE scratch into Guitar Hero that I had to resurface 13 times!!!
Dreamcast still works. Genesis still works. N64 still works. The old boys knew how to make a system.
I think we can all see the trend here, "they just don't make 'em like they used to" truly applies here.
That said, the perception of quality can really hurt a company. I say this because my friend's 360 just died for the third time, (2 RRODs and now a Disc Tray), and although he loves his system. He said next time he'll probably buy sony. It's hard to argue with that. When my 360 died last year it was in mid-november. AT THE WORST POSSIBLE TIME!
I absolutely love my 360 and have hated Sony (not the playstation, just sony in general) for a long time now, but next generation, I just may go with them again due to quality of the hardware.
Although RROD has yet to affect Microsoft 360 sales this generation, I just wonder how many converts from other systems (like myself) are going to jump ship back next generation because of the problems faced with poor quality hardware and poor service.
I will be the first person to tell you that the PS3 and PSP are amazing bits of beautiful and solid hardware, but the broad statement that Sony does not do defects is hardly the supreme truth.
I'm also the last man to defend Microsoft . . . but maybe they'll take a page out of Sony's book . . . and their 3rd console may actually be reliable.
*Hugs PS3 and Wii*
Has it ever crossed your mind that gamers like the 360, Wii or PS3 for different reasons? Yeah, no console is without its share of problems, but people buy home consoles that meet their personal taste. Believe it or not, not all gamers care about HD gaming or Blu-ray or motion controls or online gaming or Halo, Gears of War or Little Big Planet and Metal Gear or Smash Brothers and Zelda.
I knew people who bought the 60GB PS3 just because they were sick and tired of buying their *6th* PS2.
I don't know why people don't talk more about Sony issues. Out of the three companies, Sony is by far the worst when it comes to customer service. Nintendo and Microsoft Both back their systems with customer service and extended warranties. Sony gives you the finger because your System is too dusty, or you used a surge protector, or third party Video cables.
