Sony wants to topple Warcraft with console MMO photo

Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley has big plans for his division of Sony -- ones that involve the seemingly impossible. He has stated his belief that a console MMO has the potential to be as successful, if not moreso, than Blizzard's dominating World of Warcraft for PC.

"... In fact I think by having a stable platform where every customer has an online capable box is a huge, huge potential advantage in building an MMO because you've already got an online userbase," Smedley suggested after stating he "absolutely" believed a console MMO could match WoW. "It's a massive advantage over the PC and we don't have to worry about graphics cards or things like that. It's going to be very big."

Sony is currently working on strengthening its position in PC gaming, and is looking to release more PC games on the PS3. We already know that The Agency, a spy-themed MMO shooter, is being released on computer and PS3, and Sony's DC universe project and Free Realms game will be released for both mediums.

As the owner of a PC that seems to suffer from Alzheimer's, I've never been able to try MMO's, so I'm still looking for a solid console version to try out. The market is still ripe for a console MMO to take hold and Sony seems to know this. Will it create something bigger than WoW? It would seem that only WoW 2 could ever do that, but stranger things have happened.

I'll tell you..This MMO interests me and I hate MMO's. Isn't this also supposed to be one with no monthly fee as well? Looking forward to this.

Also, I think you know where this thread is going to go too, lol.

There is no beating WoW. In order for something to beat WoW it has to have a pretty popular "name" and good gameplay mechanics. Star Wars Galaxies could have been bigger than WoW but SOE blew that one.

I highly doubt anything other than a Star Trek or a Pokemon MMO will be able to topple WoW.

If a console version proves good then im sure Blizzard will just do a deal with 360 / PS3 to bring the game to the consoles as well.

Blizzard has stated in the past that they want to keep WoW out of the console market.

Possibly because the don't want to pay royalties to either of the console manufacturers. Possibly because they're batshit insane.

The only way for wow to die, is for the internet to collapse, or for it to hara kiri.

Awww... They're gone. :(

Anyways, I would think that a console MMO would have to be insanely accessible yet incredibly deep (given the control limitations, although I suppose USB keyboard support could be included...) and involve a massively popular property to have a chance at overtaking WoW.

If "Real fucking life" can't seem to defeat WoW, then another game is definitely going to have problems.

I've never been interested in WOW, this I could play. Also WOW's name should be changed to MEH.

What happened? Why was this promoted from the cblogs? Why was it in the cblogs?
Massive online multiplayer (M.O.M?} on a console sounds dandy, but please Sony no RPGs.

@Tragic Hero SWG was out a bit over a year before WoW. That being said, SOE has a horrible reputation for how they treat MMOs in general. They see any stagnation or dropoff in subscriptions as a reason to scrap the entire format and overhaul it. Usually for the worse as was most definitely the case with SWG. It may be the best thing since sliced bread, but I'm sure with their track record SOE will blow it big time.

No monthly fees I can handle.

I remember looking at a screen of this game and thought it looked really crappy.

Hmmm looking forward to it, but hundreds of hours of constant MMO gaming would definitely put a HP/MP bar burn-in on my Plasma =/. Gah its already got the frickin' SDTV lines on it. *sigh*.

I don't know, this game sounded a lot more interesting before I saw gameplay. It sounds like it would be fun to create your own agency but the missions aspect of it looked lame.

I'll believe it when I see it. hell, Sony can't even do PC MMO correctly. There's really no stopping WoW. The only thing one can do to compete with them is to become a viable alternative for the percentage who tire of the game. I think there's where WAR is pretty much focusing their game as. Not as a WoW-killer but a second option for those who have outlived WoW and want something similar.

Wow will fall, when a young girl trapped inside a boys body shall fall into a coma, and thus be trapped inside the game. It is there that with his companions, she shall try to discover the Legend of Twilight to free him from this torture. Eventually Morgana shall sendeth the 8 phases to collect data on humans for the impending doom that awaits, however a young man of the azure flame shall put an end to all of this, surfacing the evil behind CC Cor..er Blizzard.

Console users, got your keyboards yet?

Maybe a freaking PC too, while you're at it.

This is ridiculous.

I've never been into PC based MMO's...My friend and I were both just talking the other day, wondering why Sony hasn't released a console MMO yet...To me it seem s like a great idea. And Sony has been known to produce themselves a fine MMO to add to this....
Further, I prefer playing on a game pad than a mouse and keyboard myself...I know unreal boys would like to melee me in the face for that one...

The Agency seemed interesting until I saw APB, now I have little interest in that game. I don't know that Sony is in the position to really launch a WOW-scale MMO on he PS3. I'd gladly be proven wrong though.

I think a console MMO could be huge but Sony doesn't seem to have the touch anymore for good MMOs. Maybe they will start designing their games to be fun instead of designing around how to make people pay them the most money to play.

There is no way to make a decent MMO on consoles without a keyboard. Still, APB and the Agency do interest me, maybe enough to get them for PC.

I just renewed my WoW subscription and bought two copies of the WoW Battlechest. I'm already on edge after Blu-ray's victory; I won't let this happen.

If so then why is Sony releasing "The Agency" on PC? Problem is World of Warcraft had taken that fantasy medieval setting and perfected it to where no one else has a chance. Also the success of WoW isn't based on WoW just popping up out of no where, it had a good 10 years of a developing storyline that players were a part of shaping. Not to mention that I believe it was development a years prior the release of WC 3. So for almost a 1/3 of its life it being developed as an MMO. An MMO can be done on a console, just be like blizzard: take your time and do it right. Looking forward to Champions online.
