Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley has big plans for his division of Sony -- ones that involve the seemingly impossible. He has stated his belief that a console MMO has the potential to be as successful, if not moreso, than Blizzard's dominating World of Warcraft for PC.
"... In fact I think by having a stable platform where every customer has an online capable box is a huge, huge potential advantage in building an MMO because you've already got an online userbase," Smedley suggested after stating he "absolutely" believed a console MMO could match WoW. "It's a massive advantage over the PC and we don't have to worry about graphics cards or things like that. It's going to be very big."
Sony is currently working on strengthening its position in PC gaming, and is looking to release more PC games on the PS3. We already know that The Agency, a spy-themed MMO shooter, is being released on computer and PS3, and Sony's DC universe project and Free Realms game will be released for both mediums.
As the owner of a PC that seems to suffer from Alzheimer's, I've never been able to try MMO's, so I'm still looking for a solid console version to try out. The market is still ripe for a console MMO to take hold and Sony seems to know this. Will it create something bigger than WoW? It would seem that only WoW 2 could ever do that, but stranger things have happened.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Also, I think you know where this thread is going to go too, lol.
If a console version proves good then im sure Blizzard will just do a deal with 360 / PS3 to bring the game to the consoles as well.
Possibly because the don't want to pay royalties to either of the console manufacturers. Possibly because they're batshit insane.
The only way for wow to die, is for the internet to collapse, or for it to hara kiri.
Anyways, I would think that a console MMO would have to be insanely accessible yet incredibly deep (given the control limitations, although I suppose USB keyboard support could be included...) and involve a massively popular property to have a chance at overtaking WoW.
Massive online multiplayer (M.O.M?} on a console sounds dandy, but please Sony no RPGs.
I remember looking at a screen of this game and thought it looked really crappy.
APB will come close to being a console MMO.
Maybe a freaking PC too, while you're at it.
This is ridiculous.
I have little hope for this title
try winning a console war with that machine first sony because you take on goliath
Further, I prefer playing on a game pad than a mouse and keyboard myself...I know unreal boys would like to melee me in the face for that one...
"wondering why Sony hasn't released a console MMO yet"
Everquest Online Adventures.
'nuff said.
it's not going to work
That shit was terrible. How can they expect that load of crap to even sell?
