Sony wants to rumble, but so far it's a fumble photo

It's not exactly an insider's secret that the PlayStation 3's lack of rumble has something to do with past licensing issues between Sony and Immersion Corp. After a settlement was reached back in February, it was a no-brainer to imagine Sony hard at work on putting rumble back to work for them. In short, a rumble filled Sixaxis is all but a given.

With that out of the way, the focus now is on when we can actually expect to see rumble technology added to future PS3 controllers. According to the guys at Innerbits.com, the time may be soon -- if Sony can work through some battery life issues that have cropped up as a result of trying to add more features to the Sixaxis

Many have suspected that since the agreement, Sony will have been working on a new controller with rumble support. We can now confirm that this is the case. We’ve heard from two independent sources at Sony that they have been working on prototypes for several months. Officially, the corporate line is still “no comment”. Unofficially, Sony is facing some difficulties with battery life; i.e. between the rumble and the wireless support, the batteries are draining too fast to be acceptable for consumers.

This is certainly refreshing news for gamers who are less concerned with motion-sensing controllers, but are still reeling about the loss of a feature we have come to expect as standard fare on a PlayStation console. With technical comments aside, it will be interesting to see how Sony will handle the PR side of introducing a feature they were quoted as labeling last-generation technology.

Of equal interest will be how well this is received by consumers who already have a PS3. Will they buy the new controllers with glee, or criticize Sony for not settling with Immersion sooner -- like Microsoft did. Having done so would have allowed them to include rumble in the Sixaxis from the start. Sony just might show us that it's never too late to arrive at the party, as long as you come in an expensive suit, and manage to swoon the ladies by the end of the night.

I think we are all ignoring the more important issue of the (I think) mathematical flaw in the name "Six Axis." There are only three. The negative and positive of any axis aren't a new axis. Didn't they also say their system was 4-D? What the hell does Sony have against the law of physics?

The coolest thing about the six-axis is tilting your controller towards people to check them in hockey games.

I'll probably buy one as long as the damn thing doesn't get to be as large as the 360 controller with a larger battery. I hate that thing.

Rumble is more important than people realize. With rumble, you are using 3 of your 5 senses. Without rumble, you use just 2 senses.

The difference between tilting and rumble is: with tilting, you do something to the game. With rumble, the does something to you.

@PKN

Really? The 360 controller is one of the most comfortable I've ever used. But then again, I've always hated the way the PlatStation controllers feel, so to each his own, I guess.

I used to think the PS2 controller was the best thing ever, until I held a 360 controller for the first time. Now the PS2 controller feels funny when I pick it up.

Can somebody call Phil Harrison? He said rumble was a last generation feature. Why would Sony put a last gen feature into their new controller? Sony is a bunch of fuck ups.

dprime, your ability to use physics as an argument fails as you are proven to be a failure by actual scientists

now that insulting dprime is out of the way
as a ps3 owner with not just one but two controllers I can say I'll definitly be getting the new rumble controllers, although it certainly helps that I have broken both of my controllers due to intense sessions of flow, and super rubadub... I just had to save those cute baby ducks from those damn sharks... I don't care if a wall gets in my way!!!
I'll still keep a light sixaxis for long play times. I really hope sony gets its battery issues solved because I'm very happy with not having to buy any extra accesories, or batteries for my sixaxis'

also, dprime, heres some more on the whole planes of existence and why its sixaxis and not three axis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_degrees_of_freedom

Rumble isn't that important. I play PC titles and have never missed rumble. Not once. That said, the PS2 had it and it does have some uses so it should be available for those that want it. I think battery life would be an issue. The SIXAXIS has excellent battery life and I wouldn't be too gone on cutting that just for rumble.

How are they having battery life issues if wireless controllers with rumble have been around since last generation? Logitech made great controllers with both features, as does Microsoft right now. I think Sony is full of shit on this one. as always.

I never liked rumble anyway. It's about as immersive as having a bicycle bell play the sound effects. Shoot gun = ring. Get shot = ring. Crash car = ring. If that wouldn't annoy you then there's something wrong with you.

if your playing a sensor based game like flow, blast factor or... urm... Super rub a duck. >_>; and its based on the sixasis motion, with a rumbler rumbling... wont like um that mess up the sensors causing the duck to go all crazy then sink down?

The sixasis is as/almost accurate as the wiimote, but putting a rumbler I think its going to mess it up.

Cjpkiller would have realized that I was right if he read through the FIRST sentence of that article while paying attention. But of course the more reasonable arguement was his earlier one, which discredits me by pointing out that a bunch of people made fun of me over a joke someone didn't like a few months ago... infallible logic.

I love my PS3, but the lack of rumble was (and is) still a huge negative aspect of it. Not having rumble functionality completely kills two-player baseball games. When you’re pitching without rumble, it’s impossible to know how close you are to the edges of the strike zone; you have to feel it out and guess. That wasn’t an issue on the PS2, obviously, and it isn’t a problem on the 360. To be honest, though, that’s really the only instance where the lack of rumble actually had an effect on success at a particular video game. Oh, so my controller doesn’t rumble when I get shot in Resistance? Meh, big deal.

A deal letting you trade in your old sixaxis with Sony for one of the new ones with rumble would be nice... but will never happen.

It's funny how no one talks about how the XBOX honchos denounces motion control earlier on, then tried to implement it with "Gears" and the developers said no. At least Sony has the balls to just do it, instead of letting Epic decide it for them. The important think to focus on ins that PS3 controls will have rumble and motion, not who said what when
