Sony wants Nintendo to stop mocking 3D glasses photo

Sony is continuing to pour its hopes and dreams into the 3D white elephant, and it actually seems offended that other people aren't doing the same. Talking as if it's stumbled across a gift from God, Sony wants rival Nintendo to stop mocking 3D glasses, and join hands to promote this wonderful new technology that certainly hasn't been around for the past twenty years.

"I have hope that they have a broader perspective with 3D," says Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida. "When you listen to what they are saying about the effect of 3D perspective to the games, they are saying the same message we are, but they don't have to bash some small part of what the other company is doing,

"We'd like to work together to promote 3D."

Aww, a message of peace and harmony. Isn't that sweet? Yoshida also defended the glasses, claiming that in order for the true 3D experience, one needs to wear things that make them look like a prick.

"If you really want a big theater experience, of course you have to wear glasses. With the latest technology, the glasses are light and you kind of forget you're wearing them after awhile."

The major difference between Sony and Nintendo, of course, is that Nintendo's 3D solution not only eliminates glasses, it eliminates the need for a ridiculously expensive 3DTV. Sony is really underestimating how expensive it is to get into 3D gaming, especially when 100% of the population hasn't even backed HDTV yet. Sure, hardcore PS3 owners are likely rich enough to jump on the bandwagon, but they already own a PS3. If Sony thinks 3D gaming will sell systems, then the company's run by people with ecstasy pills up their arses.

Let me tell ya young-uns somethin'. In my day game companies weren't this immature. They didn't fan thge flames o' fanboy stupidity. They just gave us the goods and let us decide what was best.

Lawds how I miss those days.

I have a 3DTV and the glasses don't bother me or my wife at all. You do forget you're even wearing them.

Also, the MLB the show 2010 3D demo is bad-ass as is wipeout 3D.

At this point, bashing Sony is like a drug to you. You need to do it at least once a day, if not twice.

I am truly sorry for you.

Early adopting 3DTVs... Don't really see the point. Those who got the early HDTVs have a terrible refresh rate as their reward. Good on them suckers.

I think Sony is just bitter that virtually everyone is ready to accept Nintendo's implementation because it will be reasonably priced and unobtrusive. Sony's deployment is expensive and not worth the investment (yet). Active shutter looks like shit, but I'm sure things will get better.

As a PS3 and a DS owner, I have to say Nintendo has the right idea. Sony is on the right track, but I can't help but think that 3D with these glasses is really just a stepping stone to better tech. Besides, I just bought my 720p TV last year. No freakin' way I'm updating.

Seems if Sony can't take the heat from Nintendo, there must be some fear at Sony, if 3Dtvs don't get enough uptake, especially post E3. Commendable that 3DS is set to clean house with 3D that works without glasses, that you can also switch off.

3Dtv is nothing more than a gimmick to sell more tvs. I won't look forward to it, just because its new tech, and Sony and the film industry want to push their fool's gold on us. Sure, it might look a little better, but I don't need to wear a second pair of glasses thanks. Normal glasses are also damn expensive enough, without having to shell out again for TV use. Wouldn't look forward to marathons of gaming 8hr gaming with 3Dtv either.

Fuck that. I hope 3Dtv bombs hard, just like DRM and other stupid schemes they want to push on the people.

@KwikPwn: Thanks, I was thinking the same thing... "what is this, 3rd grade?" was really classy, Sony.

And I think they are just mad because Nintendo totally stole their thunder with a 3D solution that doesn't include paying 3000$ to them. And it fits in your pocket.

No, what people forget is that the REAL INNOVATION in 3D is the invention of clip-on 3D glasses. Not everyone has contacts, and putting a pair over your prescription ones is just silly and not terribly manageable.

I still want to see how the 3DS' 3D works, but I was gonna get the system anyway. New tech is just a bonus. :P

Why are you guys acting as if nintendo invented parallax barrier screens?
A 42 inch parallax barrier TV would cost a lot more than a normal 3DTV costs and you won't have the freedom of movement/multiple viewpoints.

I've got a few beefs with this:

1. Sony shits on Nintendo one minute, (Move is the second coming, Wii is the antichrist) then says "let's be friends" the next.

2. Why dwell on the idea that 3D can only work with glasses? Right now the glasses-free 3D effect only works on smaller screens, but that's only today's technology.

3. I wear prescription glasses. I don't care how not-retarded 3D glasses could potentially look. I'm not wearing 2 pairs of glasses at once. Clip-on sunglasses are awkward enough.

Sony has a very good reason to cry about Nintendo's jabs at their attempts at bringing 3D gaming to the PS3: It's because Nintendo is gonna yank the carpet from under the PS3 with the 3DS. Nintendo is bringing 3D effects to low-end/low-tier users. Basically trying to bring 3D to people that are dis-interested in 3D due to the normally high price. The potential for growth is massive for the 3DS, whereas the PS3's 3D output is too expensive and has too many hindrinces for the consumer to be worth the huge money investment from scratch.

Nintendo is not relenting on Sony. Now that Sony is down for the count, they're making sure that they do not get back up.

i think it's fucking cool to have glasses free portable 3D. I understand how it works and that such tech would not really be feasable to use on a big home TV.

I want a 3D TV and from how comfy and stylish the newer glasses actually look, i really don't mind wearing a set that look like designer glasses while i game/watch 3D TV.

You guys know we're not talking these...

I'll buy a 3D TV when they don't require glasses. It's not that I'm against glasses, per se, but like someone else here said, the glasses thing seems like a stepping stone to better tech. 3DS has proved (according to everything I've read) that 3D can be done without glasses.

I am perfectly happy with my current TV, and perfectly happy not to be 'bleeding edge' with my tech. I very much like not being a consumer whore, and not wasting my money on new, new, new - the technological merry-go-round. That being said, I will be buying a 3DS. It looks cool and shiny and Mario will pop out at me with his smiling plumber face. "It's-a-me, Mario!" How could I resist.

"Now that Sony is down for the count, they're making sure that they do not get back up."

Really? Really? The company set to overtake MS's home console sales and is not far off (globally) Nintendo's handheld is "down for the count"?

And we're talking about a handheld console vs a home console, it's a whole different ball game. There is no-way in hell the 3DS is going to "finish off" the PS3! Don't be silly boy.

You might want to watch terms like "ridiculously expensive 3DTV", on this one, Jim. Since Nintendo hasn't given a price on the 3DS AND the fact that any extension of their technology into other media realms is yet to even be pondered at this point. Nobody is denying that the 3DS technology is breath-taking, but how much it costs remains to be seen.

I fully agree that the idea of 3DTVs is "ridiculous" in the extreem, but if Nintendo's technology is only possible at the handheld scale, it will have limited impact on the larger media consuming public and will be nitch market rather than a revolution in 3D imaging. Note that I highly doubt this is the case, but if Nintendo actually attempts to contain the technology to that small scale arena, they will either loose big or come off as the new Microsoft duche bags of the 21st century.

@sofik88: The difference is that Nintendo is not actually bashing Sony. They just shut them up by showing a much more appealing concept by a fraction of the price, while Sony was trying to sale us "the future of entertainment". They didn't even need to address the attack to Sony for it trying to be defensive...
More classy than Sony's "because real boxers don't fight like this..." move.

Sure, when there is a comparible quality glass-free 3D TV, it may very well kill the 3D support of the PS3, but that doesn't mean the PS3 it's self is "down and out" - that's just silly.

I'm intrigued to see the various 3D TV options available as I will be in the market for a 3D TV in the next 12 months.

I like what I hear about Sony's Android powered WebTV, and if one of those comes with 3D too, I'll happily buy 4 pairs of glasses and enjoy some 3D gaming on there.

I don't know, but I would be surprised if you couldn't turn off the 3D, use the TV as a normal HD TV and bring the glasses out and flip the switch for gaming and films.

It all depends on whether or not the glasses free tech looks as good as the glasses required tech.

Has anyone even tried on the Sony 3D glasses?

They're comfy (I guess) and te 3D effect is awesome. But they're also $150 USD/pair.

So if you have a family of four, and the 3D tv comes with a set, you still need to buy 3 more pairs. That's freaking expensive.

The technology is nice, but too expensive for now. And I'm a migraine sufferer, so no 3D at all for me ;_;

Doesn't matter that it's a handheld. Actually it does. Nintendo is using the 3DS to disrupt Sony's attempts at 3D. This isn't trolling. This is business lingo. Nintendo is using value innovation to bring something that is considered high-end to a low-end market. The whole point of the 3DS being unveiled at E3 was to yank the carpet from under Sony, who was banking on 3D being their leg-up over Nintendo. As you have noticed, that strategy was pretty effective.

Nintendo has already disrupted the PS3 with the Wii, and now they're doing it again with the 3DS. The PS3 will not grow customers as the Wii, DS, and undoubtedly the 3DS will. I don't think Sony will be able to recover financially from this. I think it's just a matter of time before they and Microsoft leave the game industry. And with the rate that the economy is going right now, it's gonna be sooner rather than later.

Indeed. And while the commercials did what commercials did, it wasn't as though they were trading barbs like this outside of advertising. Coke and Pepsi have been doing it for decades, as have Tide and Cheer, but they don't say things aside from advertising that criticizes other companies.

It's changed a great deal, only the blind and daffy don't see that.

@Vanor - God i hope you're wrong.

A Nintendo only gaming industry? God please Noooooooooooooooo!

There are only so many cartoon children protagonists I can handle in my games. Seriously, Nintendo has NEVER "done it" for me, I ranted earlier this week about how they've just never clicked with me with their smiley, bright coloured games.

I want to kill stuff and i want it too look fucking awesome when i do.

I would swap a million Zelda's AND a million Mario's for one Killzone, Socom, MAG, Gran Turismo or even, dare i say it a fucking Halo!

Nintendo's sales are over-rated. As is shown by the huge gap between hardware sold and software sales. The sheer amount of Wii's bought, played for a month or two and discarded is shocking.

"ooh, we've got a Wii, let's get WiiFit" - played for a week, discarded.
(My parents, my buddy, my aunty, and at least 6 of my mum's middle aged female colleagues)

They CREATED customers with their Console-toy bridge product (Wii) but it just doesn't cater to the hardcore gamer - an ever growing and MASSIVELY profitable market.

Tell the bajillion people that bought MW2 that their only gaming option in the future is going to be Nintendo and the World will be flooded with tears. We'll need to make an arc, and the bloody Wii is not coming on MY arc!
