Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

An anonymous employee of Sony UK sent us an e-mail that states that up to 160 jobs are planned to be cut from SCE UK, SCEE Central, SCE Cambridge, and SCE London. The move is being made to streamline the company due to the fact that "our industry is in the middle of a period of transition where some of the fundamentals of our business are changing."

The e-mail goes on to say that they'll be going over with each employee whether they're "at risk" for firing or not, and that they'll go on to talk with the employee more if they're at risk. You can check out the entirety of the message in the gallery. The employee told us that Phil Harrisson was there, but he didn't talk to anyone, and wasn't looking too happy.

What does this mean? Well, it certainly doesn't mean that Sony is in fatal trouble. The fact is that the games division of the corporate giant was in the red due to the PlayStation 3, while most other parts of the company were reporting success. I'd gather that there's just some pressure to cut down Sony's losses from the games division.

"our company is in the middle of a period of sucking where some of the fundamentals of our business have been completely yanked out from under us by shite marketing and unsound decisions made by the group of rhesus monkeys we though would do better than oxford educated CEOs"

i imagine the interveiw process to go as follows:

sony mgmt: did you work on the psp version of the getaway?

employee: maybe

sony mgmt: step into my office...

employee: why?

sony mgmt: b/c you're fucking fired.

seriously, mass layoffs are terrible. hopefully those that lose thier jobs will find better opportunities.

You see, Microsoft? You crash the PS3 launch, and this is what happens - innocent people lose their jobs.

At least the image had a different quote this time. I grew tired of hearing about Hirohito.

I blame Jack Thompson myself. As well as Sony being a bit crappy.

Being an employee of SCEE, this also affects SCE Liverpool, where at least 60 people will lose their jobs.

These job cuts are also on a global scale not just restricted to europe.

Ugh, this reminds me of my long dark breakfast of the soul at intel, where the only food was oatmeal made from the bitter ash of disappointment and lost dreams. I hereby give general permission for anybody to shoot me dead on the spot if they ever find me working for a big company again.
