It looks like Eric Lempel wasn’t kidding when he said that Sony would “shortly” be posting part 2 of their video walkthrough of PS3 system software update v2.40. The second video was posted on the PlayStation.Blog around 8 AM EDT. Lempel starts off this five-minute segment by introducing the Trophy Collection under the Game tab of the XMB. First is a list of all the games you’ve earned Trophies in. The game title will be accompanied by a progress bar, which represents the percentage of trophies you’ve gotten in that particular game.
You can then go into each specific game, and you’ll be presented with a list of all the possible Trophies in that game. Each Trophy can be analyzed on its own; you can look at its title, level (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum), when it was earned, and its description. In conjunction with the new Trophy system, Sony has revamped PSN profiles. But this video provides confirmation of the leaked profile page images that we saw last week: new profiles will feature three pages.
The first page will show off your eight most recently earned Trophies, as well as your “level,” a progress bar showing how far you have to go until the next level, and the total number of Trophies you’ve received. Page two will show the breakdown of all your trophies by types of precious metals, and the last page contains the three fields of info from the current profile.
Even cooler is the ability to compare your Trophy Collection with a friend’s haul of digital ducats. This will line up your collections by game, and you can then go into individual games to evaluate how the two of you are faring, Trophy-wise. As for the levels, they’re pretty self-explanatory: a Silver Trophy will add more to your progress than a Bronze one, and so on, and a Platinum Trophy is awarded only after you’ve earned all the other Trophies for a game. Also, the PSN friends list capacity has been doubled to 100.
The video ends by noting that “developers have the tools” to patch Trophies into existing games; for a list of games that will include them at launch or be patched, hit the jump. There, you’ll also find the official press release from Sony. Oh, by the way: firmware v2.40 will be available for download on July 2nd.
[Update: According to PS3 Fanboy, the details of some Trophies will remain hidden, similar to Xbox Live’s hidden Achievements. The article has been changed to reflect this. PS3 Fanboy also has the scoop on the first third-party PS3 title to support Trophies: BioShock. Finally, Trophies will not be retroactively awarded -- the system won’t analyze your save games and give you Trophies accordingly. Instead, you’ll have to earn the Trophies from scratch.]

New PLAYSTATION®3 System Software Update (v.2.40) to Enhance Community Features
Update Includes XMB™ Access In-Game for Easier Communication with Friends and Trophies, a New Ranking and Rewards System for PS3™ Gamers
FOSTER CITY, Calif., June 30 -- Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced details of PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) system software update 2.40, designed to enhance the way PS3 users play and interact with one another. Through regular firmware updates, SCEA has the ability to continually deliver new features to PS3 system that address the needs of its users. Now with the 2.40 update, PS3's community and in-game experience will be upgraded with new offerings that gamers have asked for. The update will deliver XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) access in-game, enabling PS3 users to connect and communicate with other gamers and utilize other XMB features seamlessly while playing most games.
In addition to being able to communicate with friends from within a game, PS3 users will also be able to earn Trophies following the 2.40 update. This new, integrated system enables gamers to tout their accomplishments via profiles, which also allow users to compare their skills to other members of the community. Firmware update 2.40 will be available on July 2.
"Today's PLAYSTATION 3 experience has evolved significantly from what we debuted at launch, and the 2.40 firmware update will drive the PS3 community experience forward at a time when the platform's momentum is stronger than ever, with the launches of several recent blockbuster titles and other exclusive content on the way," said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing and PLAYSTATION Network, SCEA.
"We listen closely to our community, and we're proud to deliver new features that have been among the most requested -- XMB access in-game and Trophies. These features provide new ways for the PS3 community to easily connect, communicate and share gaming experiences with one another in and out of games."
XMB Access In-Game
XMB access in-game will enable gamers to interact with friends using messaging, view their friends' online status and profiles (including their -- all without interrupting the flow of gameplay. By pushing the PS button on the PS3 controller, the Home menu takes center stage over a game in progress. Depending on the game, XMB access will either automatically pause the game or it will continue to run in the background. With these enhanced communications features further connecting the PLAYSTATION Network community -- which has more than 9.8 million registered accounts worldwide as of June 2008 -- the Friends list capacity has doubled to 100 Friends.
Beyond utilizing Friends list features, XMB access in-game will allow users to sign-in to PLAYSTATION Network, manage PLAYSTATION®Store downloads, quit a game, and access various options within the Settings category. PS3 users can also quickly end their game and navigate directly to other PS3 system features simply by selecting to view content such as photos or videos stored on the system's hard drive. XMB access in-game works with most existing PS3 games.
In addition to these enhanced community features, the 2.40 update lays the groundwork for gamers to customize their individual gaming experience by accessing the XMB during a game and selecting music stored on their PS3 system's hard drive. Once a music file is played, users can access a control panel via the XMB that enables them to pause, stop, or repeat the track; go to a different track; or shuffle. The 2.40 update provides developers with the tools that will enable them to offer personalized background music as an option in their games, and the supporting titles are expected to be announced in the future.
Additionally, the firmware 2.40 update includes Google-powered Internet search functionality on the XMB, allowing users to input search terms and be directed to a search results page without having to first open the PS3 Internet browser. PSP®(PlayStation®Portable) system recently added similar Internet search functionality through a firmware update.
Trophies
Trophies offer a new and innovative way for gamers to showcase their gaming accomplishments. PS3 users can earn virtual trophies, which will be viewable on the XMB's Game category under a new Trophy Collection icon, and will also be touted through individual profiles. These profiles will serve as virtual representations of PS3 users, allowing them to personalize their identities and display their gaming accomplishments within the PlayStation community. Gamers will be ranked on a Level-basis depending on the bronze, silver, gold, and platinum trophies they earn across all games. They will also be able to see how much progress they have made toward the next Level, as well as compare their Trophies to friends.
Super Stardust™ HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage the Trophies system and will offer a variety of trophies*. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:
BUZZ!™ Quiz TV
LittleBigPlanet™
MotorStorm™ Pacific Rift
NBA 09 - PS3
PAIN*
PixelJunk™ Eden
Resistance 2™
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
Warhawk™*
*Requires a game update to be downloaded and installed.
PS3 users can expect to see additional first and third-party games bringing Trophy support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. SCEA is actively working with developers to ensure that Trophies are incorporated into new titles in the future.
Before people jump in on the "OMG where are my MGS4 trophies or Uncharted trophies!?" kick I would just like to point out that the press release only states that the list above consists of first-party games for the PS3.
3rd-party or independant developer games for the PS3 may already have something lined up for the 2.40 update.
Wow, July 2nd. Not to figure out if i fiddle with 2.40 before or after i go see Hancock, or for that matter if i will go to work.
I guess now with thw trophy system, i wont be able to simply scream "I'm better than you at it!" to all my friends huh?
Oh the insanity my house will endure if Guitar Hero or Rockband get trophies.
Okay, so while my horrible Internet connection is loading these videos now, can anyone answer the question of whether or not we'll be able to log into multiple PSN accounts and use multiple headsets on a single console now? I honestly think that's just as important as in-game XMB...
WOW !!! I have to say I am very impressed with the trophy system. I would like to know the significance of a person's "level". Is it going to be like the XBOX360's achievement score, which is just a score, or will your level actually allow to access to features people with lower level s can't access?
@Pedrovay-- You can use multiple PSN accounts on one system. It's how my friends and I share Rock Band song downloads. If you mean at once, sorry, no clue.
Sweet, two days instead of two Novembers ago! I kid. Kind of.
Other than the leveling system it seems like a carbon copy of the xbox system. Thats not a bad thing; copying the best bits of competitors products is the key to MS success after all.
Also, I dont understand why samit says you cant see what you have to do to get a 360 acheivements because most of them come with descriptions of how to get them when you click on them.
Like Drunken Haze said, you click on the Achievment to see what it is, theres only some that havent got anything on...
Anyone know how they are gonna back date the tropies for all games?
I'm not sure I'll care about PS3 trophies. The 360 is still my main platform and I really only use my PS3 for exclusives. Still, nice too see that this is coming.
Not that it's a big deal, but yeah if older games incorporate trophies it'd be nice if it just picked up my accomplishments without me having to redo everything to that point. Like I said though, not a big deal to me. It'll be fun to get some of these though I'm sure.
What I love about the PS3’s Trophy system, as opposed to the 360’s Achievement system, is that you’ll actually be able to see what you need to do in order to obtain a certain Trophy
It definitely looks a lot better than I expected. The most welcomed feature is definitely the ability to see what you actually have to do in order to receive a trophy. I'm surprised the leaked images were real.
@coffee. just cuz they didnt announce it, doesnt mean there wont be trophies for gta4 and mgs4. those two games were not made by sony thats why there was no official announcement about them working with this update
I think that would be the best way to make trophies the more appealing system is to make your level mean something. I'm not sure what a certain level would get you but it would be cool if it actually did get you something. The only thing would suck is that people would start level grinding and I wonder what sony is going to do about people using other people's game saves if they put trophies in games you've already beat.
Quick point - will these trophies be unlocked when we actually achieve the necessary criteria or does it unlocked by reading off of save files?
Both would have their faults - if it comes down to save files, people will simply cheat their way up to stupid scores, which would be irritating. If its surpassing the criteria, does that mean we would have to start our old games over?
Either way, super stoked about the update, it looks awesome!
My birthday is July 2nd as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seems ok to be honest, I only have Warhawk and SS HD from the list anyway, not a big deal to earn the trophies, particaurly since I barely play Warhawk anyway. The only issue occurs if the developers patch in trophies for all my other games! Wouldn't mind earning some on games I play tons anyway, like CoD4.
Tonight's the night we're gonna make it happen,
Tonight we'll put all other things aside.
Give in this time and show me some affection,
We're going for those pleasures in the night.
I want to love you, feel you,
Wrap myself around you.
I want to squeeze you, please you,
I just can't get enough,
And if you move real slow,
I'll let it go.
I'm so excited,
And I just can't hide it,
I'm about to lose control
And I think I like it.
I'm so excited,
And I just can't hide it,
And I know, I know, I know, I know
I know I want you, want you.
We shouldn't even think about tomorrow,
Sweet memories will last a long long time.
We'll have a good time baby don't you worry,
And if we're still playing around boy that's just fine.
Let's get excited,
And we just can't hide it,
I'm about to lose control and I think I like it.
I'm so excited,
And I just can't hide it,
And I know, I know, I know, I know
I know I want you, want you.
now i know i'm an ass for saying this, but i wonder how many times they had to yell "CUT!" and take it again because the guy would say "achievements." lol
