Sony trash talks Apple and the App Store photo

PSP Minis is an exciting venture, and something I'm looking forward to tremendously, not least because it will finally guarantee a consistent flow of affordable games on the PlayStation Portable, and that would make a nice change of pace. Sony is not in a mood to be humble about the new service either, and has launched a direct attack on Apple's App Store, deriding the service for stranding developers and attracting unprofessional game creators. Ouch.

"Unlike with the App Store, we're looking to support everyone that develops for us, instead of leaving developers out in the wilderness," claims SCEE's Zeno Colaco. "We’re not immediately interested in giving developers free access and no help.

"... Some of the developers working on the App Store and PSP Minis tell us that they prefer our approach because they get more visibility. PSP Minis is a different approach altogether in that we still have a professional environment -- if you want to call it that. I’m not suggesting that iPhone developers are unprofessional, but I think that the App Store has attracted a number of hobbyists. Clearly, the PSP is designed for gaming."

Colaco added that PSP Minis isn't being designed to directly compete with Apps, but that thing may move that way in time. He also reiterated that the barriers for entry aren't on the PSP aren't as strict as those in place for the App Store, and even hinted that PSP dev kits might end up completely free.

So yes ... Sony is very confident that PSP Minis will be your one-stop shop for everything small and downloadable. Best of luck to 'em.

While I do enjoy bashing iphone games and the devs that make them, I don't think Sony should be the one bashing them. I still don't like my PSP, and the mini won't change my view of the PSP.

Now when Nintendo starts bashing...

Sorry Sony, but I've played lots of iPhone games recently developed by what you would call "hobbyists" that complete blow most "professionally" developed apps out of the water.

I'm not going to link to the Mercenaries 2 song twice in the same weekend, but it would be appropriate.

The iPhone's SDK is free; to get your app onto the store is a one-time $100 charge. I highly doubt 1) Sony will have a lower entrance charge and 2) will take less than a 30% cut as Apple does. They've also limited the size of these minis to 100MB. iPhone development isn't split between one with a disc drive and one without. Talk about barriers to entry. >.>

I love how Sony can't help but bash the iTunes store apps before their service has even seen the light of day.

It's always the same bravado-laden shittalk with them.

BLURAY isn't being designed to directly compete with DVD's

Guess they always win then

Does the iphone have games comparable to GT portable, dissidia FF or god of war (I know it's minis we're talking about, but hey) ?

...No?? Alright, I'll stick with my psp.
and if I wanted a smartphone which the iphone isn't I'll buy a nokia n900.

sorry if this post seems agressive, it isn't.

Ok, so whats the big deal? The iphone is well known to have gazillions of apps and games, and most of them are garbage. This isn't anything new. He is trying to sell the new psp and convince people to buy stuff from Sony, just like everybody else does for their respective company. Its called marketing, and Apple, Nintendo, Microsoft, they all do it, and they all say their stuff is superior to the competition. This is nothing new. Its always been that way, and it will always be that way. Its like you people believe that Sony is trying to rape your family while MS and Apple are curing cancer, protecting the environment and blowing little bits of candy flavored sunshine out their assholes.

Don't you ever tire of the daily 'Sony did xxxx or said xxxx and now I am outraged!' routine???

Sony love the taste of their toes, and can't seem to help their foot out of their mouth.

This PR shit talking. Sony should be pointing fingers, as they have tried services for music like Sony Connect, in stupid codecs no one uses, and expected success. They forget about cancelling Yaroze, which many starter devs used, instead of building on that PS1 foundation in conjunction with PSN.

Come back when those Minis are ready to go, then speak your jibe.

1. The iPhone has a button. It's the home button :D
2. GT Portable = Real Racing
3. God of War = Hero of Sparta

But seriously, Sony has good downloadble games because its a GAMING handheld. The iPhone is a good mix of novelty and games, but its far from the perfect handheld.

The iPhone has a hell of a lot more to it than a PSP GO (No.1 being that its games actually exist right now.) to most people and Apple wasn't even making a fight against the handheld gaming industry but they just have to make everything a competition. Sony has tried to make a fight against (In order of most to least reasonable):

The 360,
The DS,
The Wii,
Blu-Ray players,
DVD players,
Stereo systems,
Computers,
Porn sites?,
and a PHONE.

I want to point out to the guy who thought it would be genius to say this how non-existant PSP minis are right now and remind him that he's insulting the professional standards of a freaking PHONE!

Hey Sony. That's cool that you're making it easier for developers, but why does it matter if you're hurting the consumers who originally wanted to buy the Go? A demo for Rock Band instead of GT, full priced PSP download games, and still no information on how the UMDs will transfer over, if at all. If you don't have many buyers, there isn't going to be a huge draw to develop for the Go.

I love my PSP, I don't know what i'd do without my iPhone, but sorry Sony, the App Store puts the power for anyone who wants to dev in their hands at a very affordable price to apply. It's even better for former game debs that are embittered with corporate bull to strike put on their own and be their own boss.

Oh, and the devs get the lion's share of the net profit.

They bring up interesting points about the App Store, which are quite evident if you have dug deep enough into it. It would seem that hey still have professional barriers (like with the cost of the dev units) because they are expecting a professional product in the end, and although we are yet to see whether this pays off it's nice to see that they are interested and expectant of standards which will hopefully go to ensuring us some good cheap games.

I think the AppStore is getting a reputation as a wild frontier with no rules except for inconsistant enforcement of vaguely worded policies. So from that respect, so long as PSP Minis are a consistant quality, I don't doubt they'll do well. However, I think AppStore competition is a bit too lofty of a goal to aim for.

Instead they should focus on shaming DSiWare. And considering we got yet another broken up DS game bit this week, I expect the shaming to occur day... fucking... one...

personally I think that they should be doing the exact opposite- what really makes the CFW scene so appealing is that homebrew devs can make apps and games that sony won't or doesn't. Allowing absoluteley anyone to dev for the "Go" and allowing them to sell and/or give away apps for the machine only discourages future piracy and gives homebrew devs a chance to make a few bucks win-win

"Clearly, the PSP is designed for gaming..."

...Until they realize how much more money they could be making selling worthless shit for a buck a pop like MOST (not all) of the devs on the App Store...

PS, wasn't the PS3 a "gaming" machine for a while too? You know, between the time period when it was an all-in-one entertainment system in the beginning and before it was an all-in-one entertainment system currently?

my problem with the app store is that I cant buy anything from it since Im from latin america and they wont accept international credit cards. Is one of the most annoying things ever that they release a product in a country and then give no support at all because you can only buy from them if you have a US credit card. Stupids...

>> "We’re not immediately interested in giving developers free access and no help.

I like the qualifier "immediately" in there, implying that somewhere down the road they WILL be interested in giving developers no help. This, sadly, is more truth than fiction. As companies like Sony are interested in homebrew when their product is languishing, but not so much when the user base picks up. Same thing with backwards compatibility. They're 100% behind it when they need to make up lagging marketshare, but when they start gaining, they drop it by the wayside like trash.

I predict that based on Sony's past arrogance, if they enjoyed the success of the App Store, their disregard for developers would be at least as bad as Apple and likely worse.

The other thing is how is Sony's trash talk any different than Michael Dell making remarks about the viability of Apple? Or Ballmer yapping about the Zune being superior to the iPod or the iPhone not being a "serious" phone? Sony should focus less on TELLING us what they will do, and just do it. You build a great app framework with great games at great value, Sony, and we'll buy the f*ck out of your system.

Gamers ultimately go where the good stuff is, regardless of who makes it.

You're a baller ONLY if you can back up your trash talk with actual buckets.

Why does Sony think that trash-talking is the way to sell your product? I'm an iPhone user, and there are many things about iTunes that I hate. I am also an owner of the PSP, and will purchase the PSP Go as well. I don't need to be told the problems with their competitors products, I need to see a superior product produced by Sony. I'm just turned off by the fact that companies feel like they have to trash-talk to justify their product, when the product they are referring to has sold millions more than their has and is far more successful than theirs. I am definitely getting the idea that Sony has the smallest penis of the bunch...

Considering the fact that the iPhone has been gaining news at conventions for being the next "casual" gaming platform, its no surprise Sony will trash talk it. Although the comparison is a bit one-sided: iphone= a phone with not too much gaming ability, pspgo = dedicated gaming ability...

Brosof K,
Check your history. Sony didn't care about the Homebrew community and didn't start targeting it UNTIL someone figured out how to load a pirated ROM. THAT'S the line that was crossed. You can piss and moan about how horrible Sony treated that community but look at it from Sony's perspective. Homebrewing on that console effectively gave a LOT of people a free pass to steal anything they liked and laughing at Sony the entire time.

The TRUE travesty of the entire affair is because what started out as something purely innocent turned into Sonys biggest problem with the platform. And the only lesson learned here by all three is anytime there is a homebrew community, it's a matter of months at most, before that community turns everyone onto stealing games. Once that is achieved, the number of users using those techniques dramatically increases. And in the end, the message sent to the companies is that homebrewers cannot be trusted.

It's a sad affair but after what happened to the PSP, that's all the excuse companies needed to make sure shit is never open again.

I just don't think you should bash something that isn't directly trying to be a gaming platform. Sony should bash Nintendo for that, not Apple. Then again, the DS is destroying the PSP, so I guess they would sound real stupid if they decided to do that. Honestly though, the iPhone isn't trying to be mainly for gaming like the PSP is, so his comments seem to make no sense. Why attack something that isn't your direct competition? The iPhone is (Mainly) for casual game players, while the PSP is for the hardcore games player.

I love my PSP, and I love my iPhone however the iPhone is a phone first and it's the primary reason why I refuse to buy games for it, I'll download the free demos but the biggest drawback is there are no physical buttons which compromises percision and obscures the graphics. I would much rather play hero of Sparta, which is no where near as good as GOW, on my PSP than my iPhone. I just hope sony doesn't put too much attention to getting these minis and neglect getting real games on the PSN for download

Zenonia etc etc is amazing. I just downloaded an app that let's me stream my entire iTunes library of a few hundred gigs just like my Orb app does my tb hdd.
