PSP Minis is an exciting venture, and something I'm looking forward to tremendously, not least because it will finally guarantee a consistent flow of affordable games on the PlayStation Portable, and that would make a nice change of pace. Sony is not in a mood to be humble about the new service either, and has launched a direct attack on Apple's App Store, deriding the service for stranding developers and attracting unprofessional game creators. Ouch.
"Unlike with the App Store, we're looking to support everyone that develops for us, instead of leaving developers out in the wilderness," claims SCEE's Zeno Colaco. "We’re not immediately interested in giving developers free access and no help.
"... Some of the developers working on the App Store and PSP Minis tell us that they prefer our approach because they get more visibility. PSP Minis is a different approach altogether in that we still have a professional environment -- if you want to call it that. I’m not suggesting that iPhone developers are unprofessional, but I think that the App Store has attracted a number of hobbyists. Clearly, the PSP is designed for gaming."
Colaco added that PSP Minis isn't being designed to directly compete with Apps, but that thing may move that way in time. He also reiterated that the barriers for entry aren't on the PSP aren't as strict as those in place for the App Store, and even hinted that PSP dev kits might end up completely free.
So yes ... Sony is very confident that PSP Minis will be your one-stop shop for everything small and downloadable. Best of luck to 'em.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Now when Nintendo starts bashing...
The iPhone's SDK is free; to get your app onto the store is a one-time $100 charge. I highly doubt 1) Sony will have a lower entrance charge and 2) will take less than a 30% cut as Apple does. They've also limited the size of these minis to 100MB. iPhone development isn't split between one with a disc drive and one without. Talk about barriers to entry. >.>
OMG JAM STORELONG IS A PSx3 FANBOYYYYY
It's always the same bravado-laden shittalk with them.
PS3 isn't being designed to directly compete with Nintendo
BLURAY isn't being designed to directly compete with DVD's
Guess they always win then
I almost would have rather gone to work and labored than not and be this boredddddddd.
Oh uhhh some thing about Sony... etc...
...No? Alright, I'll stick with my iPhone.
Does the iphone have buttons?
Does the iphone have games comparable to GT portable, dissidia FF or god of war (I know it's minis we're talking about, but hey) ?
...No?? Alright, I'll stick with my psp.
and if I wanted a smartphone which the iphone isn't I'll buy a nokia n900.
sorry if this post seems agressive, it isn't.
Don't you ever tire of the daily 'Sony did xxxx or said xxxx and now I am outraged!' routine???
This PR shit talking. Sony should be pointing fingers, as they have tried services for music like Sony Connect, in stupid codecs no one uses, and expected success. They forget about cancelling Yaroze, which many starter devs used, instead of building on that PS1 foundation in conjunction with PSN.
Come back when those Minis are ready to go, then speak your jibe.
1. The iPhone has a button. It's the home button :D
2. GT Portable = Real Racing
3. God of War = Hero of Sparta
But seriously, Sony has good downloadble games because its a GAMING handheld. The iPhone is a good mix of novelty and games, but its far from the perfect handheld.
The 360,
The DS,
The Wii,
Blu-Ray players,
DVD players,
Stereo systems,
Computers,
Porn sites?,
and a PHONE.
I want to point out to the guy who thought it would be genius to say this how non-existant PSP minis are right now and remind him that he's insulting the professional standards of a freaking PHONE!
Oh, and the devs get the lion's share of the net profit.
Seriously! They need to just shut their stupid mouths, make good shit and let people enjoy it, then brag about their success after they have success.
*rolls eyes*
:)
Instead they should focus on shaming DSiWare. And considering we got yet another broken up DS game bit this week, I expect the shaming to occur day... fucking... one...
...Until they realize how much more money they could be making selling worthless shit for a buck a pop like MOST (not all) of the devs on the App Store...
PS, wasn't the PS3 a "gaming" machine for a while too? You know, between the time period when it was an all-in-one entertainment system in the beginning and before it was an all-in-one entertainment system currently?
PPS, please forgive any spelling errors, but I'm posting via Destructoid's toilet edition... From my iPhone. My PSP 3000 is too big to hide in my pocket at work.
I like the qualifier "immediately" in there, implying that somewhere down the road they WILL be interested in giving developers no help. This, sadly, is more truth than fiction. As companies like Sony are interested in homebrew when their product is languishing, but not so much when the user base picks up. Same thing with backwards compatibility. They're 100% behind it when they need to make up lagging marketshare, but when they start gaining, they drop it by the wayside like trash.
I predict that based on Sony's past arrogance, if they enjoyed the success of the App Store, their disregard for developers would be at least as bad as Apple and likely worse.
The other thing is how is Sony's trash talk any different than Michael Dell making remarks about the viability of Apple? Or Ballmer yapping about the Zune being superior to the iPod or the iPhone not being a "serious" phone? Sony should focus less on TELLING us what they will do, and just do it. You build a great app framework with great games at great value, Sony, and we'll buy the f*ck out of your system.
Gamers ultimately go where the good stuff is, regardless of who makes it.
You're a baller ONLY if you can back up your trash talk with actual buckets.
Check your history. Sony didn't care about the Homebrew community and didn't start targeting it UNTIL someone figured out how to load a pirated ROM. THAT'S the line that was crossed. You can piss and moan about how horrible Sony treated that community but look at it from Sony's perspective. Homebrewing on that console effectively gave a LOT of people a free pass to steal anything they liked and laughing at Sony the entire time.
The TRUE travesty of the entire affair is because what started out as something purely innocent turned into Sonys biggest problem with the platform. And the only lesson learned here by all three is anytime there is a homebrew community, it's a matter of months at most, before that community turns everyone onto stealing games. Once that is achieved, the number of users using those techniques dramatically increases. And in the end, the message sent to the companies is that homebrewers cannot be trusted.
It's a sad affair but after what happened to the PSP, that's all the excuse companies needed to make sure shit is never open again.
