Sony to terminate 8,000 jobs photo

To have your job hanging by a thread, especially in these worrying financial times, is not a good thing, but 8,000 Sony workers are about to feel the pinch as the PlayStation 3 manufacturer looks to cut its staff down to size.

As Sony allegedly continues to lose money on the PlayStation 3, one analyst has suggested that a staff cut of this size won't help the company out very much: "This staff reduction won't be enough. Sony doesn't have any core businesses that generate stable profits - the next thing we want to see is what is going to be the business that will drive the company."

The staff cuts are expected to be implemented by 2010, which should be just in time for the release of Home.

Is this specific to their videogame department? Well I guess it doesn't really matter, 8000 jobs sucks either way.

This is actually quite depressing.

I really thought the games industry was bucking the trend of this global "financial tsunami".

I guess I was wrong. It's all going to go to shit afterall.

I'd be worried, if I had a job at Sony.

Hell, I'd be worried even if I had a job ANYWHERE.

Also, you guys might want to back down on the fanboy angle.

Why? Real people are losing jobs. Real people are losing their meal ticket for the next few weeks/months.

That sucks for sony employees. Financially, the free MMO Home sounds like an example of the thinking that is losing them money in a market that is pretty healthy relative to others.

Oh shit, somebody said something bad about Sony! Time for you to pull out the big guns. Trolling Microsoft!

The Zune kicks ass no matter what anybody says. Oh I also heard that they went black on the Xbox so have fun with that one buddy.

Uh oh. Sony definitly needs a "stimulus package." Hurry and lobby the Japanese government to steal a bunch of money from successful companies so that they can cut jobs instead, and give that money to Sony!

From what I've read, this does not effect the PS3 sector of SONY, however they are looking at that part to see what could be done about improving its performance.

How about an advert, or two? There, save teh consultants, I just saved you $10,000.

That's an awful lot of jobs being lost. I feel bad for those people.

The job cuts may not heavily affect the PS3, but the rising strenght of the Yen over the dollar and the Euro will. Sony gets 80% of its PS3 profits from overseas sales of the systems and if foreign currencies are weak against the yen then that cuts into Sony's profits. Low profits across the board means Sony may have to rethink how the PS3's current revenue stream is done....PSN for free may become a thing of the past.

I wish they would just partner with Microsoft and build a common console using a common network. Their offering is not strong enough on its own, but they could put their efforts into developing some good games for the Microsony box.

Sony hardware and Microsoft software would make an amazing console indeed.
