After a disappointing showing in their annual report for 2009, Sony's PlayStation division is moving back to black with their financials. Nikkei is reporting that the consumer electronics giant will announce a return to profitability when they release second quarter figures on Thursday. This is also in stark contrast to Sony's first quarter performance last year, where the division saw a loss of 25.7 billion yen.
Cutting costs seemed to have been the cure. The report goes on to point out things you've probably surmised on your own by now. Obviously, Move will be a big focus in the coming Fall and Sony is banking a lot on adoption of 3D technology by consumers.
Good for Sony. Always nice to hear when someone is meeting with success. With the aggressive software lineup they have coming, I'd expect there to be more positive news next quarter as well. Unless, of course, Move should somehow manage to bomb at retail.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
As long as someone can afford all of this stuff they're sending out then they'll be ok. Just not me in my current state of economy.
Wait, what?
Can't wait for move, and plan on picking up a 3d tv in the next 12 months or so.
Given that games can be updated via a patch for support, there is a lot of scope for backwards as well as forwards compatibility, plus there's a lot of AAA title support upfront, which is more than can be said for Kinect.
Having said that, it won't be a game changer, but I don't think Sony expect it to be. A lot of what they're doing at the moment is manoeuvering to win the 3D format war in the longer term imo. Remember that Sony is a vertically integrated company, unlike MS or Ninty, so they won't follow the same strategy as those two.
I heard they did that a few months ago, maybe even more than a year back... not sure though.
lol, it doesnt always seem to fly like that when we talk about other studios.
Ha, no chance!
Nintendo have made a profit on every Wii made since day one (mostly last-gen components, so cheap to manufacture), plus most of the games are made by Nintendo too... horizontal integration pwns ass and drinks milkshake in this case...
There, fixed that little typo for ya Conrad.
