Sony to open up PlayStation Home beta to the public 'very soon' photo
     PSN

In the wake of the European PlayStation Forums’ announcement that they’ll be offline next week for a PSN authentication update, we also have a related story that will surely be very exciting for many PS3 owners. According to a thread on the official PlayStation.com Forums, there’s finally a light at the end of the long, dark tunnel of waiting for PlayStation Home.

Forum member ‘patches 4 socom 3’ received the May 08 issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine, and found a neat surprise within its glossy pages. It came in the form of an article called “PlayStation POV: PLAYSTATION Network in ’08”, authored by Susan Panico, the Senior Director of the PSN. Towards the end of the piece, she confirmed that Sony will shortly be making their Home beta (which has been invitation-only thus far) open to the public.

This is obviously huge news for all the PS3 owners that have been waiting with bated breath for a peek at what Home is all about (and probably even for those people who have been breathing normally). Personally, Home always piqued my interest somewhat, but I’ve never been dying to try it out. And of course, the endless delays have only caused my curiosity to wane. Still, I try to reserve judgment before I actually have hands-on time with things, so I’ll definitely give the public beta a shot.

So far, I only know of one Dtoider who has been in on the private beta: decoyb. With nearly 22,000 registered accounts, you think we’d have at least a few people that Sony picked...has anyone else been experimenting with their virtual apartment? And do you guys even care about Home at this point? Well, if you do, I’ve attached the three photos that the forumite snapped; the header image is one of them, with the important parts (poorly) highlighted.

home is gonna depress me. having a virtual condo of awesome, and the continued my search for a condo/townhouse in LA in which anything under 400k buys you fail, is depressing.

@MaxVest: I think I’ll resign if I ever make a non-typo spelling error on Destructoid. But I’m glad that there’s at least one other Dtoider who also knows the correct spelling of that term. What the hell does “baited breath” mean, anyway? That doesn’t make a lick of sense.

Very soon could mean months when considering the magazine comes out once a month, for all she knows their readers will expect some update within the next two issues.

Like monosylabik said, I'll believe it when I see it.

@ BuckF1tches:

Home BETA is like...putting a layer on top of a game. It doesnt change the actual game to do things it doesn't already do. But then that was the case with R:FoM until it was updated...now you can bring up your friends list in the games lobby. So who knows what updates will happen from now to then.

Is it what we called "soon" in DNF time line?

Our beta period should expire soon if they don't renew it again. It's pretty stable now and game launching works so it does seem ready for an open beta. The war room for warhawk sounds pretty good and you could launch into warhawk before the warhawk update. So they probably added group launching which makes me think they're getting ready for the public beta.

I'm excited about anything thats better than second life. Hopefully someone in the beta could tell us once it starts how it compares. I predict: @home = full of win

I'm still waiting to see how gamers as a whole treat this, and if it's a genuine improvement over Live or just a gimmick.

well corak, that's the best part. sony isn't releasing it until its done. as long as its almost perfect then fine but if they can't get it right they won't release and i have no problem waiting for perfection. it had better be more then most expectations are hoping for. i can't wait to see what happens with it a year from now. my prediction: home will grow, ea still won't have any clue what needs to done with game rooms, resistance2 will topple all in its path, killzone will be weak, and warhawk will receive 6 more maps. don't hold me on these now, i will.#1_in_the_home_G!!

I'm in the beta I have been since it first started and was also in the Warhawk Beta. Home at this point to me is useless there is not only never anyone in there, but even if there was it just doesn't appeal to me. After you watch all the trailers you can only play so much checkers in the main square before you realize you are bored. I could give a fuck in real life about decorating my house, I pay people to do that so I sure as fuck never want to do it when I'm on my PS3!

Some weirdos are going to enjoy home but as for me I would rather play games with people on XBL. I'm sure people aren't going to believe me that I'm in the beta, if you don't that's fine. D'toid if you needs screens hit me up I have a camera and can get you some.

I have been a beta tester with home for about a year and I have spent roughly 1 hour on Home in which I deleted it from my games list though I can re-DL it. Might be better when people I actually kinda know (D-Toid?) are on it as so far it has blown baby chunks.
