Sony to have more games than Mega Man sequels by next March (update)

Sony to have more games than Mega Man sequels by next March (update) photo
     Kaz Hirai

It is often said that good things come to those who wait. Up until this point, if you happened to have purchased a PlayStation 3, you are banking on that phrase. Well, allow me to be the bearer of good news -- something that I think you'll agree that Sony could use a lot more of lately.

During an interview with the Nikkei Business Daily, Kazuo Hirai (Chairman and Group CEO of Sony) let it be known that Sony is well aware of the criticism that the system has too few games in which to woo gamers with. Not only that, but also that Sony is going to counter this with a renewed vigor -- by working with software publishers on all aspects of marketing games. How many of said games, you ask? Expect to see around 200 software titles and 180 download-only titles to be released for the PS3 by next March.

While sooner is always better, picking up steam after being dominated by a much cheaper console with just as few must have titles is always a slow process. Expect to see the PS3 back in competitive form, and ready to duke it out with whoever is leading the pack by March. With Ken Kutaragi gone, and Hirai at the helm -- things are already starting to look a lot brighter for the PS3.

[Update: Well it looks like things aren't as rosy as we initially thought (otherwise known as journalists everywhere jumping the gun). Luckily for us, a SCEA spokesman was quick to set the record straight. Hirai was citing international figures, so the correct number of first-party games announced for 2007 is more down the lines of 15. Personally, I was happier with the original story -- but the truth will set you free. Doesn't mean you'll like it, but it is what it is. Sorry, Sony fans.If it makes you feel any better, I'm bummed out too. I was hoping to cover positive PS3 news for once.]

200 games? Sounds like PR lies... just doesnt seem like a reasonable number right now. I mean how many games do they have to this point, like 12?

A whole slew of crappy Cabela ports is due any day now by this assertion.

Add to that every EA sports game save MLB will be 2008 by then, throw in some 2k sports, and you're 1/4 there.

Maybe they'll release 30 SingStar DVD's and call those in that 200 total they're predicting.

BluDesign at 06/21/2007 00:31
beer_baron: Are you counting total released to date by march or this story's "200 new titles by march"?

Right now they're at about 50~ or so. So, put me down on 5, under.

So basically, they have to put out 9-10 games a week for the next year straight. And 5-6 of those have to be brand new, non-downloadable titles.

Seriously, though, are there even going to be 10 brand new games released every week in general? All systems combined?

By the time they have a decent library, The price point will have dropped reasonably enough for me to consider buying one. But I'm gonna venture a guess and say that its not gonna be by march '08. 'till then, I'll be happy with my 360, and copious amounts of cheap llallo.

Corncobtacular's Avatar

I wonder if the total 380 number assumes that different SKUs count as different games...for example the Japanese, American and European MGS games would count for 3 different games.

Then they could count their video trailers as software titles.

@ raggedROBO.
because this is a videogame blog where people interested in the subject come to get related news and comment on it. I would tend to disbelieve this statement from any of the companies. So, at least in my case, It's not Rabid anti-Sonyism. I have owned the ps1 and ps2, like the vast majority of posters here. I just don't feel it's in my interest as a consumer to purchase a ps3 currently. And I'm going to voice that opinion here because this is the proper outlet to do it. Plus I'm bored at work.

If any of the major manufacturers claimed that they'd be releasing 10 games a week for the next year, we'd be making fun of them, too. Just because some of us didn't buy a PS3 doesn't mean we can't afford it.

It means we research major purchases before dropping half a grand on them.

@ Sue - "General All Around Bashing?"

Would you like to see bashing? Stating that Sony is making promises it can't keep (just like Nintendo or M$ would be, making the same outlandish claim) and that the PS3 is an ill-advised purchase (unless an alternate-history WWII FPS is worth $600 to you) isn't exactly bashing.

Sony engineered themselves a money pit that's too expensive to develop for and has too few users. Note the evidence of the sinking ship; rats jumping overboard, leaving Kaz at the helm. Now they're making crazy-talk about 9-10 games a week, 5-6 of those disc-based retail titles.

THAT'S closer to bashing. I say closer, because it's still all true. And thanks for being holier-than-thou after calling all of us cheap bastards for not jumping on the overpriced folder-at-home bandwagon. I'm sorry you're disillusioned, but don't accuse the rest of us of the same sort of shortsightedness and bias that you displayed when you bought Sony's new console on the merit of their last console, not the current one.

I've never been shot in the head, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that it would suck.

Sure, all the other companies have their flaws too, but the point is, The PS3 doesn't look like an attractive purchase to alot of people right now. And this promiss of 10 games a week is spurilous(SP). You have to conceede that. Now I see why Sterling feels the need to hit as many sides of an argument as he can when he posts an article. People like you saying, "well if you gonna say something bad about company A, then you have to mention everything that company B has done too! even though its in no way contextual."

In a way, the both of the arguers, Su and Stripe alike are pretty much correct. I don't know about the most, but I do believe it's my own opinion that should dictate when to buy something and when not to. If a person so wishes to buy a PS3 right now, then more power to them and I hope it all works out in the end. If another person wants to wait until more titles are released, who am I to tell them they made a bad decision, if they wanted or enjoy it? Perspective is one thing. Forced perspective is another. That's not pointed at anyone *nod*

As for this claim.. It doesn't necissarily say GAMES so I am going to take it that it could mean anything... Software titles could mean anything software. From Movies to Games.. If they take both into consideration, then yes - they will meet their goal more than likely.

"Where's the bashing of MS and XNA? Where are all the user created games? Where is all the cross-platform? Why all the hardware failures? Why is a 120GB HDD damn near $200?"

This is a post about Sony. And everyone already knows that console manufacturers fuck you in the butt for peripherals and addons. I have yet to have a 360 hardware failure, but do I think M$ is above criticizm? Fuck no, XBL microtransactions and $3 Xbox 360 backgrounds are a fucking joke. But is M$ trying to tell everyone that they're still the market leader when their console has taken a royal shit? Nope. They're not even haughty about being the current HD console leader. They're just making and licensing good games, not bragging about how they're going to make an unbelievable, absurdly-high number of them. You were "holier than thou" when you made the absurd supposition that we were all broke college students, and insinuated that that must've been the only reason anyone wouldn't drop a week's salary on one. I was when I started bashing (read: gave you exactly what you asked for.)

"15 minutes at the Target Kiosk"

How about hours and hours at a friend's house playing Resistance and thumbing through demos? And my comments have nothing to do with the actual quality of those games, I can read reviews, I can garner consensus, and first and fucking foremost, I CAN FUCKING COUNT. I know exactly how many more games I can get for my 360, and I know exactly how much it costs. games divided by console cost could probably be a fair equation for value, discounting quality and features (that only get used because there are no games, like blu-ray media and the cell processor for Folding@Home), and the math is pretty fucking simple.

In all fairness, value is a personal judgement. For me personally, Resistance < $600.

Oh, and BTW:
http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/detail.asp?dpno=7019981&Redir=1&description=US%20Modular-HD%20External%20Enclosure%20/%202.5%20120Gb%20Drive%20Combo-Drive%20Cases%20&%20System%20Enclosures

120GB 2.5" drive w/ enclosure - $157. So there's $50 of MS markup, provided that the interface on the Xbox 360 drives costs about the same as a USB/IE1394 enclosure. That's not really too bad, considering M$ can get $30 for a VGA cable that ought to be $10.
