Sony to censor PlayStation Home; those f***ing c****! photo

PlayStation Home is a huge part of Sony's upcoming strategy, codenamed Operation: Don't Go Bankrupt, and they seem to be taking a page from Nintendo's playbook to make it happen. While Microsoft's Live service is an anarchistic utopia filled with children exercising their birthright to call each other f**f***s and robot***a**es, Sony's Home service will censor such profanity in the name of appealing to Ma and Pa Middle-America.

Not only will you be forced to clean up that salty tongue of yours, but Sony doesn't want you using any other salty bits you might have, as they will be monitoring public spaces for inappropriate behavior. While this will definitely cut down on the spread of robo-VD, a large portion of their user-base is no doubt going to be upset by their inability to "do" that hot fifteen year-old girl, who is actually a frumpy fifteen year-old boy, who is actually a reasonably attractive thirty five year-old police officer. That's the sort of thing that America, and specifically America's Internet is built on, and anything else is just un-American! Sony, if we can't digitially fornicate, the terrorists have already won.

Meh, Sony won't be able to keep their servers up for more than 15 min at a time so this is a non-issue. Besides, Sony saying they're gonna do something and actually doing it are two very different things. I'm sure PS home will quickly spiral down to become a pron-fest even Amsterdam would be proud of.

It would please me to see this implemented as a client-side string substitution, which could be hacked to allow dirty language through. Or even better, simply an option within the parental control suite. Unfortunately, I don't dare hope for such a happy middle ground.

... why not add an option? Doesn't it seem like the most obvious thing to do, rather than alienate 50% of your demographic which do like to swear, huh fuckin' Sony?

I for am glad they're doing this. Maybe these kids will learn other ways to express themselves verbally without resorting to foul language.

The only single reason i can imagine i'd ever want to use this overblown chat room for, & this is if i lost all sense in my head a decided to blow 425 quid on a side standing foremans grill, is to abuse Sony loving geeks who think it "cool" to stand around in a virtual room & discuss what virtual drapes they've hung in there virtual bedroom. Now take away the fact that i cant call them all "A BUNCH OF F**KING C*CK SUCKING LOSERS!"
....i'm not so intrested..... funny that.

people go out, get drunk, get laid.

i think this whole issue about censoring is getting a little out of hand. the way it reads to me is in public places they will be monitoring. [which they should a little, they are public places, but somehow i doubt it will be the old u.s.s.r.] and at homes they aren't going to do anything unless you get reported, and really why are you going to have someone at your own "home" that is going to report you?

There's not only going to be censoring, but there's going to be MODERATORS! Awesome, just what I need. Some ego driven doofus getting $10 an hour to stand around in Home for 10 hours a day gets to tell me what to say.

Hey, go take a flying leap and r***f l*d yourself, Sony.

Does anybody even think Playstation Home is even a good idea?

When I want to play a game online I want to get to the point not go to somebody's house if I wanted to do that I'd still be in the 16 and 32 bit eras.

Is there a way to not block swearing, but block being a complete fuck face on places like Live. I mean...

This is okay: "Oh, fuck, I got sniped again!"
This is not: "FUCK FUCK FUCK *sucks saliva out of braces* FUCK FUCK FUCK PUSSY PUSSY MICHAEL JACKSON."

you dont HAVE to use it, but yes its indeed a great idea not only for online gaming, but for an online community which is what it should be. the point of online is to bring people together, and what better way then a virtual community?

Looking at the Gizmodo article, I don't think it's that big of a deal. There's a text filter, but I'm sure most people will use voice. And XBL technically doesn't allow profanity either, but it still happens - and often. People are just getting up in arms over (probably) nothing.

The article also mentions (and this is where the real news is, people!) that voice and text will be turned off for underage users. If Sony can cut down on 10-year-olds screaming into the microphone, then they've won me over.

I think the article clearly mentions "public spaces", I dont see anywhere they will censor you or monitor you in your own apartment which is a "private space". And where you can play any music or video in your PS# HD ;) (hint, hint)

I could be wrong though.

Just wait for the damn thing to be out, before dissing it ok?

Not a big deal. I hate hearing 15 year old douches spewing the "n" word and fuck every five seconds. I mean, I can handle not swearing for the hour or so I'm playing in one of these games. This is bad news for the kiddies.

How can they possibly police innumerable 64 person lobbies?
Answer: they can't.

Sony will probably just use the same procedures in place for their MMO's: a tiny number of "Live" GM's who will spend most of their time responding to previous complaints. I wouldn't be surprised if the "Home" GM team IS Sony's MMO GM group. They must be short on work since WoW came out.... =)
