So, Nintendo murdered everyone at E3, not just with its rather terrifying selection of awesome games, but with its stunning 3DS demonstration. If you haven't seen the thing in action, let me confirm that it's pretty amazing stuff. Sony boss Kaz Hirai hasn't seen the 3DS, but that didn't stop him chatting sh*t about the technology behind it.
According to Hirai, his company has already researched the prospect of "naked eye 3D for portables" and concluded that it "does not have high precision." He added that Sony's own brand of 3D, however, would "increase hardware sales" of the PlayStation 3. He confessed he hadn't seen the 3DS in person, but his conclusion seems to be that the tech behind it doesn't work, even though everyone who has seen the 3DS knows it works.
Sounds to me like somebody's a little jealous at being upstaged. Hardly surprising, considering that 3D is Sony's latest attempted trump card and nobody was talking about it on the showfloor because they were too busy gawping at the 3DS. Nevertheless, we all know Sony's MO by now -- talk trash about a product until they realize it's successful, then copy it.
Expect a 3D PSP to arrive in the future and join the ranks of DualShock Controllers and PlayStation Move. Y'know, those other gimmicks that Sony said were crap before jumping on the bandwagon.
SCE President Downplays 3DS Tech [Andriasang]
Maybe the tech IS good enough, but Sony can't afford to take a hit by selling another peice of hardware below cost.
What Kaz Hirai actually said
"In an interview conducted at E3 on the 16th, Hirai told the site, "Based off internally conducted research, naked-eye 3D for portables does not have high precision, and at present there are limitations."
Hirai would not issue a comment on the 3DS itself, stating that he'd yet to see the system (this was on the second day of the show). However, he apparently gave the site indication that Sony does not intend to pursue naked-eye 3D technology for portables.

Combined with the fact that there were only a handful of original games announced at E3 also makes me one sad panda.
Sony has some good stuff in the works, but it would be nice if Kaz would just shut his mouth until Sony stops hemorrhaging money as a company. Business to business, balance sheet to balance sheet, Sony is in no position to take shots at Nintendo.
But honestly this is just pathetic, but hardly surprising. It's pretty common to trash talk other competitors, but doesn't make it any less stupid. But they are talking about to very different products. Making 3DTVs with the same technology as the 3DS would be impossible and very impractical, no glasses or not. 3DTVs still need glasses, and there is very little Sony could have done different at the current time. So why not just share the market? Nintendo has the best alternative for tiny screens, Sony the best for big screens.
Looks like his research team, is about to be fired. So I guess its official, Nintendo's research team is better than Sony's. But I guess we already knew that, because one keeps copying the other. Even though Sony keeps claiming that they were working on everything years ago. According to Sony they invented the chicken, and the egg, so which ever one came first, they invented it!
Sony talking shit about Nintendo's technology, when they're practically copying the Wii.
Oh, hypocrisy, you make me laugh.
Maybe this will be similar to how the Wii's motion control stands to succeed because the product is, through and through, a motion control system. And in this case the 3DS is a 3D system, through and through. Whereas people have to invest in Sony's motion control for them, by buying motion control games and motion controllers. And the 3D is, as I've seen it, largely cosmetic and optional for the PS3's games. I can't see a lot of developers investing their time and money for something the majority of consumers won't be participating in due to either not having an awesome TV, or not wanting to wear glasses.
Does this mean Sony can't succeed in either of these things? No, but I think with both motion and 3D, they won't be nearly as successful as Nintendo because they aren't as fundamentally committed to either idea.
Because the touch screen controls can act like a second stick in many regards, so a second stick isn't really needed (except for lefties)
Aaron Greenberg vs Sony: who can talk more shit in the least time?
And soon enough, 3D will be mainstream. The hype and popularity of 3D in cinemas isn't a bad sign either.
To add to what Chardan said, I also believe that most of the PSP games that people expressed grief over wanting a second analogue nub were the ones that were just console games for handhelds. Like God of War, Metal Gear Solid and the like. Even with improved graphic capabilities on the 3DS, it's likely we'll be seeing more portable games than just reworked console games.
The only thing Sony is waiting for is to see how well the 3ds succeeds. If it does, which it will, there's no doubt they'll be releasing a 3d psp eventually.
Does he mean its "not fucktardedly expansive tech" or something else?
The deal without the glasses, however, that is something they should work with.

The glasses have a 30% dignity loss, at least.
I'm a southpaw and I'm not worried about the 3DS. Not even for games that require the stick and the touch screen. You can always use your finger if the stylus is too awkward. Lefties can poke with their right hand, right? Sure, fingerprints are an issue then. . . But fingerprints didn't stop all those people from getting an iPod XL.
So, in other words you're not as good as Nintendo at designing hardware.
Or am I being lied to by THE MAN.
Lefties are a myth.
I'm safely assuming that the D-Pad and the Analog Slider aren't going to be used at the same time.
Anyways, back to Sony dissing the 3DS. Once Sony stops copying Nintendo, I think they can talk. I still have a useless SIXAXIS controller that doesn't have rumble because of those fucktards.
My thoughts on this whole 3D gaming and entertainment is if I can do it without the glasses than I might jump into it. So sony needs to figure out how there doing this and imply it to their TVs
As for what SONY is saying, they aren't talking smack as it appears Jim has jumped to conclusions over some statements that never actually said anything directly about the 3DS. It's wonderful how people managed to create something out of nothing and I usually respect Jim's blog posts so this just makes me slightly annoyed.
Will definately be getting the 3DS as soon as it reaches UK shores I have been impressed by Nintendo's E3 show and the heavy third-party support (way to launch hardware, Nintendo!), but I can see myself also getting a PSP2, having been a fan of the original PSP.
Shocking as it may be, apparently one or two people think that the whole 3D-with-no-glasses part of the 3DS is kind of a cool thing. Crazy, right?
