Sony sweetens the PS Vita cross-play deal with new promo photo

[Update: I originally wrote this all wrong and suggested games like UMvC3 would be free because I have shit for brains. I've fixed it all up now. Sorry about the original post being basically totally wrong and stupid. At least for once I can be accused of lying to make Sony look good.]

Sony wants to really push the cross-platform connectivity between the PS3 and PS Vita, and is letting three games play piggyback in order to do so. Anybody who buys such games as Hustle Kings, Wipeout 2048, or Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 on their Vita will be able get PS3 content downloaded for free

Top Darts, Motorstorm RC, and Hustle Kings can be played on one system if you buy it on the other. If you get Wipeout 2048 on Vita, you can get free tracks from Wipeout HD or Wipeout Fury.

That's a solid little scheme right there, and one worth taking advantage of. Cross-play could be the ace in the Vita's hole, especially since the Vita's early consumers are sure to be dyed-in-the-wool Sony product fans. Well done Sony, you get a smiley sticker!

One of the smart moves Sony has taken with the Vita.

Well done, indeed.

And what of those of us that already own UMVC3 on the PS3? Do we get to download the Vita version? Or do we have to RE-PURCHASE the digital version to cross-play a game we ALREADY OWN and have purchased TWICE already?

Keep doing this, and I may forget the whole "UMDs? What UMDs?" thing. Hope they do this with MGS collection.

That's actually really awesome of them. I thought we would get shafted and have to buy both versions twice. This is actually the best Vita news I've heard in some time. If this becomes standard and most Vita cross-play games come with both versions than that's really cool.

@Teffy what about reading the article?
Teffy's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/17/2012 15:58

@Cornelius Klein Yeah I did a bit of digging - this article is flat-out WRONG. Here's how it actually works:

- Buy Hustle Kings on either PS3 OR PSVita, get the other version FREE
- Buy Wipeout 2048 on Vita and Wipeout HD Fury on PS3 and get HD FURY as FREE DLC for 2048 on the Vita when it comes out
- Buy Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and any DLC you purchase works on BOTH versions.

That is not even remotely close to what this article is saying and I hope that it can be corrected.

If they gave me the PS3 or Vita Version for free when I bought the other version of MLB The Show 12 that would be enough to knock me off the fence and buy a Vita.

@KieranD No, it nets you a free copy of the HD Fury DLC for 2048 once the DLC is available.

This post super misinforms people. The only game you get both ways if you own one version of it is Hustle Kinds. Wipeout HD and Fury you get if you already own the Vita version, not the other way around. And you can't get UMvC for free either way, the DLC is just cross compatible.

A little editing, perhaps?

Need some clarity here.

Top Darts, Motorstorm RC, and Hustle Kings get free games on the opposing platform (Buy one, get the other free).
UMvC3 has cross compatible DLC.
Buying WipEout 2048 when you own WipEout HD or Fury gets you free track downloads for WipEout 2048 cross-play (WipEout HD tracks and WipEout Fury tracks respectively in two separate DLC downloads).
Scissors's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/17/2012 16:08

Damn I got excited over semi-misinterpreted reporting. Jim you don't get the Vita version of UMVC 3 free you get to share the DLC between them. It's the first party Sony stuff that's available on both plats, but we already knew that.

Well fuck. Guess the old saying "if it's too good to be true than it probably isn't" applies here.

Oh well, they COULD have made a huge cash grab and got a ton of positive press, but as we all know, Sony has a severe allergic reaction to positive PR. Its the same condition ea, activision, capcom and ubisoft have.

Being cool makes em itchy and irritable.

Still cool, i wanted to buy hustle king for the ps vita, but was not sure because i have it on ps3. So i'm happy to have it on ps v too !!!

I hope game like NHL 13 or NFL 13 do a combo like this. They even could make the game cost more.

Like 79$ for NHL 13 ps3 and a Downloaded code or card of NHL 13 on psv.

I think it would work great for sport game! Continuing your season on the go would rock.

You actually need to have purchased the Wipeout HD Fury stuff on PS3 already, to get it free on Vita, otherwise it will be up for sale for everyone else.

@Teffy you are actually wrong too

1. If you purchase Hustle Kings for PS Vita, you will get Hustle Kings on PS3 for free. If you already own Hustle Kings on PS3, you’ll be able to download the PS Vita version for free.
(if you purchase on Vita, you get the PS3 version free but if you already had the game on PS3, you get Vita version free)

2. If you purchase WipEout 2048, you will be able to download WipEout 2048’s DLC packs, WipEout HD and HD Fury for free when they launch on PS Vita later this spring.
(if you purchase 2048 on Vita and already own HD and HD fury DLC packs on PS3, you can download them to Vita for free when the pack is released on Vita)

3. DLC purchased for the PS3 version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 can be used on the PS Vita version for free (and vice versa).
(DLC for Ultimate marvel are shared between PS3 and Vita)

4. Buy Motorstorm RC for PS3, get Vita version free and vice versa

5. Streetfighter X Tekken share DLC with PS3 and Vita if you buy on either platform Capcom confirmed

I am confused as to how I get my Shuma Gorath and Jill Valentine I've already "paid" for (collector's edition downloads) on my Vita version of UMVC3. I thought they were supposed to carry over?

Still sweet.

I own Hustle kings, so there's a free Vita game.

I'm totally buying Motorstorm RC, so there's a free PS3 game.

Win win.

I wonder how they will do it for RUIN!?

"Oh well, they COULD have made a huge cash grab and got a ton of positive press, but as we all know, Sony has a severe allergic reaction to positive PR. Its the same condition ea, activision, capcom and ubisoft have."

they can't offer free Vita downloads for 3rd party games unless the publisher agrees to it. Hustle Kings and Wipeout are published by Sony which is why they can do that. UMvC3 is obviously a Capcom product, which why why they stated "Our friends at Capcom are also offering shared content for no additional cost with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3."
