Hasn't the Kinect, a full blown $150 product MS already has said is profitable, already shipped (and nearly sold) around 5M in under a week?
Move has games already, for sure, which appeals to me, I assume Kinect will have them eventually.
Kinect has Dance Central, which while not be for everyone, certainly is going to draw a lot more people in than the Move launch titles.
I'm pre-supposing you sleazily pick up a cheap Playstation Eye via ebay. You don't need the "new" one.
You also do not need the axillary controller - it's optional for a lot of games, and you can use a Dualshock instead.
The Move controller is $50 brand new, and the eye should be around $20 on ebay. Relatively cheap.
360 - Gets going out of the gates but eventually has its issues.
PS3 - Slow out of the gate but becomes a steady powerhouse.
I personally have more intent on getting Move. It looks more responsive than Kinect, not as costly, and Kinect doesn't have No More Heroes coming to it so it can go fuck off.
Expecting to sell 5m by the end of the fiscal year is A LOT different then selling 5m launch week.
Odd that I wouldn't do that, but I'll gladly pay for the Move and No More Heroes so I can play that again when it comes out. Just hope its the unedited one this time around, so both are available in the EU!
I mean, the fact that there are already nearly as many Kinect games released or in the pipe as the EyeToy and PS Eye have had in their entire lifecycles just goes to show that Microsoft knows how to get people excited for its products (and, in turn, make money) way better than Sony.
@ hanowyoucantseeme
You realize that studios said HDDVD was the superior product to blu-ray but the reason they backed blu-ray is they felt the cost of HDDVD's would drop quicker meaning they wouldn't make as much profit and that's why HDDVD failed not because it was hard to manufacture or produce but because of costs...so comparing the kinect to HDDVD doesn't really work because.
On the plus side for the parents out there that do research into cost of games, move controller, sub controller, wii system, all the controllers, most people would probably end up buying the kinect because it ends up being cheaper in the long run vs wii and move. but those who look at upfront costs will make the mistake that move is cheaper, here's an example. 4 member family wants to all be able to play games together, XBOX 4 GB system with kinect, 3 Controllers-412.90
sony playstation 3 system with move, 4 sub controllers, 3 more move contollers, 3 regular controllers-789.77
wii system with wii sport resort, 3 controllers, 3 nunchuks, 3 motionplus, 4 classic controllers-504.86
now this is based on if you have 4 people in your family and everyone wants to play every type of game out on the market for every system, just based on the prices for the systems and everything you would need for 4 people long term makes the xbox 360 the cheaper of the 3. most people look at right now costs so in that way yeah next to the wii move looks cheaper.
Sorry Sony, I'm not buying what you're shoveling. Move did not impress me much when it launched, so I didn't buy it. I doubt I will until the thing is on sale, used, and I can pick up a boatload of titles for $10.
Can not the Kinect only play two people at a time?
Anyway, the initial cheapness of each peripheral is not ground enough to draft a conclusion, as the initial cost of the 360 is less than that of the PS3, which lead to the huge margin of the one over the other - even though the 360 costs more in the long term. Now the roles are reversed. Seems to me that marketing will be what sells either product, and not price point.
You forgot to take into account that some move games require two move wands... so once you take everything into account move really isn't as cheap as people are claiming. It would be nice if someone were to actually post videos on all the pros and cons of every addon, digital foundry hasn't touched on move and they tend to do a great job of letting people know the pros and cons.
Nope, I didn't make that up.
Didn't Sony release statements a while ago saying Move hit 1.5 million in Europe and 1 million in the US? They're not doing too bad, especially if they're right in saying that they're selling these at a profit.
On the other hand, it'd be nice to get some software sales.
tldr: Move Bitch, get out the way.
They mention shipped to retail, not sales. They say purchase intent doubled since May. (May, way back in may), was the purchase intent 2% and not it is 4%? or was it 20% and not it is 40%.. Both percentages show doubling of intent, but you get the idea.
I like Move, tho. It has opened a new venue for my gaming. I hope we get a killer app with it sooner or later.
2 people at a time, but you can play 4 player games that allow you to swap in and out and it recognizes everyone without any problems. You can walk into the kinects point of view and it won't hurt the person playing the game. Yes i agree marketing will be the one thing that leads people to buy one product over the other. Most people would prefer to let marketing do all the background checking and price comparisons for them, I just imagine that if sony, MS, and nintendo got together and took all the pros of each system combined them we would have one killer system. sadly what we end up with is 3 systems that are great to play but all have flaws that only those people out there willing to take a look at the big picture realize.
Look at it from a developer standpoint: by making a Move-specific game, you're limiting your audience to 1-2 million (at MOST). Your options are to expand your target audience by also making a Wii version (cheaper, larger install base than PS3, larger install base than Move) or by making your Move-specific game also have Dualshock 3 controls. To be honest, I'm far more excited for an HD Wii than a PS Move killer app. Sony just doesn't get how to push developers to support their products.
That was my entire point. Microsoft accomplished in one week what Sony's 3 month + long *goal* is.
I kinda feel bad for them.
How so? They have not sold 5 million Kinect units. Nor have I seen any sales info anywhere. If they had it would be plastered all over the net.
Microsoft is "hoping" to sell five million by the end of the year, by the looks of local retail stores in my area they have barely sold any. Not saying Move is moving any faster or slower, as it's just sitting on the shelf as well. That's just my local area though.
Link to your source that they have almost already sold five million units please?
You have to hand it to MS, They cut their teeth to some extent being involved with dreamcast, they entered their own console in 3rd as the underdog. Leapfrogged Sony, the gaming masters, with their second entry. And now are poised to dominate with the xbox720 with natal2 tech that recognizes the slightest finger movements and the expression on your face.
Sony has grossly misspend their R&d on a wand that overnight looks like something from the dark ages compared to the sic-fi aura kinect emanates. Sony will be unable to catch up to the massive tech lead Microsoft has established, and unless nintendo throws some kind of a miracle curveball with a mind reading device, may actually slip to 3rd place...although unlikely as Sony will be almost crippled to command a2nd ever again.
Scary isn't it. Btw I own ps3 with move, and are waiting for kinect launch down under in 2 weeks.
"I'm going to assume Kinect vs Move is going to go alot like 360 vs PS3.
360 - Gets going out of the gates but eventually has its issues.
PS3 - Slow out of the gate but becomes a steady powerhouse. "
Also, we're all GAMERS here right? You do realise the Kinect IS NOT for you. It's for Oprah, Ellen and justin Beiber loving Soccer Moms and their little kids. Microsoft don't want you to buy Kinect, they don't care, you've already bought their Xbox, you already buy the games and probably pay for LIVE - that's why no CORE games launched with Kinect, because they DON'T WANT YOUR MONEY. They want NON-GAMERS money, because they've already got yours.
How any GAMER can say "Kinect is really cool and Move is lame" is beyond me.
Move however is specifically aimed at YOU. sure they've put some crap in there for your mom, or your kids, but primarily it's been made for YOU AND ME. With the FPS games, the Fighting games, the RTS games in mind. The Dancing and TV show (what's with that?) games are a complete after thought. this thing was designed with what YOU want from motion controls in mind.
Don't be a second rate consumer, using something aimed at Kids and Soccer Moms, with a few CORE games promised down the line sometime (ooooh you can play your game with the controller like normal, but for an extra £130 you can use HEAD TRACKING too) - PSeye does head tracing too you know.
Seriously, Move is fucking awesome for FPS games, and we all know the majority of GAMERS play a whole lot of FPS games.
If dancing and fitness games are your bag, then sure, get kinect, but on your way to the store please hand back your gamer card and join the casual queue.
With some crystal ball gazing I expect Kinect at some point to supplement core games. Not going to speculate on how thats going to be acomplished.
Er...no. Kinect hasn't sold 5 million, that's MS's projection of what it might sell. Actual sales numbers haven't been declared. These aren't even shipped numbers (eg: sold to stores and not consumers)
