Sony sells 85,000 PlayTV boxes in a week in UK photo

We've had our eyes on this PS3 DVR attachment called PlayTV. Eyes only. Not our paws, though, as Sony has only released it in the UK. The little add-on units are selling like hotcakes. We're hoping that the strong sales will have them considering a US version someday.

PlayTV has sold 85,000 units in its first week of sale. Tech Radar says that there was some worry that the device would be poorly received by gamers, but now I think it's clear that PS3 owners want to record things off the telly.

The device will be available to Europe in time for Christmas, letting even more users record live TV to their PS3 hard drives and stream it to their PSPs.

Would you watch TV on your PS3 if you could? Or do you think our cable box DVRs are good enough?

IIRC, it doesn't do HD, right? In that case, meh. But if I'm wrong, and it does, then DO WANT

My store was sent 100+ units of it, as of today we have sold ZERO.

It basically serves the same purpose as a 'Free-view' box (Available for around £10 from ANYWHERE), just has the rewind/fast-forward/record functions that no-body really wants considering the restricted channels.

We have a nearby branch (And a competitor store nearby) that have moved quite a few units between them. From what I've heard however most of the buyers have asked for refunds, some because they live in areas that can't recieve the signal, some because they already have a freeview box (stand-alone or built into TV) and some because they were plain dissapointed in the channel selection.

No Sky, No HD, No Novelty.

Even the people who come into my shop and but EVERYTHING have been steering clear of it. (And yes, it is the PS3 owners who tend to flash their cash)

I can't see it being on the market too long.

Ever since I learned I can take whatever I want off of the internet, I don't really watch TV.

@TUoAnonymous:

I'm not sure if we're watching the same Sky, but the one I get is littered with repeats and nonsense imported American shows, as well as overpriced sports and movie channels. The only good content on British TV is on the main five channels, all of which PlayTV can receive.

The real attraction to this for me was the awesome interface. It puts anything ANY set top box manufacturer has created to shame - it's just so fast. Recording is easy and it's all HDMI and beautiful digital.

I laugh in the face of anyone who buys PlayTV thinking they'll get any more channels than are already available on Freeview.

@Neiltc13

At present am using the Virgin (No doubt soon to follow trends and change it's name) set-top, anything I could record, rewind etc I have access to already via the On Demand, well bar the news.

Unfortunately in the area I'm in - and it may well be just this area, although it is far from a wealthy area - a large amount of people will splash money on anything that fits either of the two following criteria 1) Made by Sony, 2) New. They will do this with no regard for anything it says on the box.

While this is really good for sales, the environment completely changed my opinion on the 'Console Wars'.

So, at least from what I've seen, I would have to say that if you were in this part of England, you'd be laughing in a lot of faces.

I rather just save my money and do the ol' "Torrent & Transfer" to my PS3. Besides, I only have around 5 gigs left :(.

I live in Finland and was happy to order one from Amazon.co.uk. The free channels here are enough for me and the majority of people. I have no experience with other DVRs but the price was pretty good if you already have a PS3 anyway, the scaler seems to be better than my TV's built in one and now I can record from the TV. Also, it's got no DRM so I can do whatever I want to with the recorded material.

I'd get it. With no DRM it's a very nice little device. Is it HDMI only?

I thought it did do HD. If it does not then I am not sure I would want it. But if it is cheaper than a slingbox, I may grab one.

Should work without HDMI. It is currently a bit unclear whether it will support HD by a software update or if it is going to be a separate hardware product but originally they were talking about this supporting HD...

i would definately buy one given the option. I suppose for those who currently have a dvr its less of an issue but i can think of many people who dont own one, or are like me and do own one but its only in my parents room so having one of my own would be pretty sweet. Also given that i own a psp this would be like a dream i'd certainly have much more to watch during class so i dont fall asleep.
