Sony screws pooch by decapitating goat [UPDATE] photo

Sony has always been known for their bizarre, provocative PR stunts, but they've always stopped short of actual corpse desecration. Until now.

Sony recently held a launch party in the UK to promote the wicked awesome God of War II, and in reverence to the ancient Grecian cultures celebrated so vividly in the title, they filled the party with topless girls, pits full of snakes, and a decapitated goat, whose stomach had been filled with offal (not his own) that guests were invited to sup upon.

Of course, animal rights groups immediately came to the aid of the exsanguinated livestock, dubbing the event "outrageous", and asking if they provided a comparable decapitated soy alternative.

Sony, being Sony, continued blissfully down the path toward actually murdering children to promote the PSP, by printing pictures of the entire event in the Official PlayStation Magazine. They have since released an apology for exposing such a large, public audience to an accurate portrayal of an ancient Greek orgy, but you just know they had their fingers crossed behind their backs when they issued it.

[UPDATE: Kotaku has word that the event wasn't exactly as Bacchanalian as The Daily Mail made it out to be. Apparently the goat itself was just a decoration, which was kept away from guests at all times, and the "offal" was a traditional greek meat soup, served vaguely near the goat, but not actually from within it. The most intriguing part is that Sony claims the article itself was written by someone not in attendance at the event, and that he, himself, was a cyclops.

So, who are you going to believe? Crazy ol' Sony, or crazy ol' media cyclops?]

@ Nex "The UK papers were the ones ever so offended about what happened"

Yes, but you cited the Daily Mail who are offended by everything. The newspaper is utter dribble, you may as well have quoted the back of a box of Count Chocula.

On the issue, while personally I dont find it any more offensive than say a slaughtered pig carcass at a hog roast at a BBQ, it is insane.

Can you imagine seeing a beheaded goat at the launch party (all be-it an over 18s only one) for a new spider-man film? They didn't over dare dream of this sort of thing when 300 was released.

Why is it people who work in the video games industry are so stupid.

This is AWESOME!!!

This post is a textbook definition of irony!

So you are going to protest Sony's "attention whoring" by well...
BRINGING ATTENTION to their event.

"a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated. "http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/irony

BTW this party sounded awesome. I wish I could have gone, or even been invited. Given it's description I doubt that I will see pictures of it either.

If you eat meat get used to the idea that what you are eating used to be a live breathing animal. Don't get so upset when someone points this out to you.

I don't think most of the people here are offended as much as they just think it was an ass-hat thing to do. Sure, Sony didn't kill the goat, it would have died either way, no tears shed there. But the fact that they decided to use a carcass as a prop at a launch party is more than a little wierd. It's like they have no filter. With all the dumb PR moves they've made, you would think there would be a voice of reason somewhere in the company that would say "yeah this idea's kinda cool, but we might wanna think about this first."

Everyone bitching about animal rights activists really need to shut the hell up. The extent of their reaction to the stunt, according to the article was
The International Fund for Animal Welfare said it was "outrageous" that the animal’s death had been used "to sell a few computer games".

A spokesman said: "We are always opposed to any senseless killing of an animal and this sounds like a gruesome death. We condemn Sony’s actions. It is stupid and completely unjustified."
How is that overreacting? They're not picketing or throwing paint at people or anything, just a statement condemning an action they disagree with. You people are far more guilty of sensationalism than they.

The problem here was that they were exploiting the mutilation of an animal corpse to do nothing more than sell something. I can understand people not being personally offended by it(seeing as they shovel animal carcass into their guts on a daily basis anyway), but doing something like for PR this just seems irresponsible. It could establish a precedent for that kind of questionable act. Given the nature of PR oneupmanship, it could very much lead to unnecessary animal cruelty. It's also not setting a very good example for da kidz.

But shit, I reckon I'm preaching to the damned here, so I'll just drop it.

>The Queen Catherine comment was meant to be distasteful in order to juxtapose such a thing against what Sony did.

Well, the difference is, that the queen/horse story is a rumour, but you didn't present it as such. You could say that she "supposedly did it" - that would sound more acceptable. At least, that would be a direct analogy - noone can tell for sure what kind of orgies the ancient Greeks had, as the documentation for these times is poor and mostly fictional. Most of the things we know about them can be considered rumours at best.
Also, the poor structure of the sentence could make one believe that she did it for publicity.

>I wasn't aware that we were guilty of constantly insulting
Russians; can you give me another example?

Here: "Look, we found a funny Russian. Let's say that he's a Tetris addict".

Also here. GSC even aren't Russian. They are from Ukraine.

So, does anyone remember the post made by Maddox on www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net about how even tractors and other machines farming veggies for vegetarians are still killing animals? The point was that so many furry friends like rabbits, skunks, etc are accidentally slaughtered by machines while harvesting. So even if vegans are eating veggie burgers and feeling good about themselves for preventing wildlife, some animals probably did die for the sake of their food.

I have yet to see or hear any animal rights activists complaining about this. (If you find any, let me know.) This is why I never side with them.

Yes, Brad Drac, you can call me another guy just "bitching about animal rights activists". To me, most of them are biased morons. Trust me, I've seen some in person. The article linked to us was poorly written by the fact that this was very opinionated material which good journalism should not contain. Yes, with that last sentence, I will admit that I feel a good chunk of Destructoid's articles are poor journalism. (That doesn't mean I don't like it. I still visit here daily.)

I'm rambling beyond the point I was making. I think I've said all I needed to.

Remember the post by maddox saying for every animal you don't eat, he'll eat two? Do you think he actually does that? Of course not. As you well know, that site is a pisstake. Using anything he says as an argument in a serious conversation is patently ridiculous. While it's true some animals are probably killed by those machines, the number is probably very low, and there's little the harvesters can be reasonably expected to do about it.

To you, perhaps most animal rights activists are biased morons. That is dependant on your experience with them. Not all are as idiotically singleminded as the peta douchebags, they just unfortunately tend to be the ones who catch the eye of the media more often(sort of like the columbine shooters fucking up for us gamers). Animal rights organisations have done a lot to ensure animals are treated more humanely, in all manner of areas. If you're genuinely of the opinion that people should be able to do whatever the hell they want to an animal, for whatever reason the like, there's little I can say to you. Otherwise, quit speaking through your posterior.
Besides, the people who I was calling out were those complaining about activists in relation to this particular event, seeing as all they did was issue a statement.

huh1? I read your article and the actual complaint. I targeted the "International Fund for Animal Welfare" for their lack of understanding that the goat was not 'senselessly killed'. It was dead allready. As well that UK paper talks crap, and in UK people are crazy as hell, so they just want attention to the paper that pretty much matches NAtional Enquirer here in NA. sh*t articles.

Who cares what else they do to the carcas, lol. They could put a fake robot parts and make it look like its coming back from the dead or w/e, its a sony event, since when did Sony make sense in their ads.

Brad Drac, I wouldn't use most of the material Maddox wrote as an argument at all. I just wanted to bring it up, because I think Maddox brought up a good point.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about animal rights. To me, what humans do to animals is the way natural selection progresses. That includes any way an animal is dominated in any form.

I don't think it was a very good point. Accidents are by their nature beyond people's control. If I accidentally kicked an empty can on to the street, and someone at some stage tripped over it and got their head crushed by a car, there would be no reason for me to feel guilty. The person didn't die as a result of intent or negligence, just an unfortunate set of circumstances.

I also don't think natural selection applies to humans any more. We have don't have any natural predators nor a natural prey; we have the power to pretty much choose freely any type of food on the planet. However, we also have the power to observe the consequences of our actions, and alter our behaviour based on that knowledge. Anyone who willingly brings about the suffering of another creature when it is not necessary is the very definition of a "bad person" in my books. Also, natural selection does not remotely apply to us within our species. A person's genetic worth often seems to be inversely proportional to how much they breed(watch idiocracy for reference, it's brilliant).

I think what I brought up was a good point because it shows the hypocrisy from animal rights protestors when you think about it. The machines aren't the only cause of the animal's death. Poison from farmers and hunters are used to get rid of "pests" at the farms.

And oh yes. Natural selection does apply to humans too. This goes for both breeding and dominance overall. Anything that threatens human life like (I hate this one since it's overlyused, but I only had 90 minutes of sleep last night. Brain fart) global warming is natural selection at work. Even our technology can cause it. By the way, thanks for giving an intelligent argument with me.

@ Depressive:
Stop. Just stop it. You're done. We don't care anymore.

-> Mxy: Aye, that folly I must concede. I was just using the post as an excuse to plug that film, 'cause it's fskin' brilliant.

-> Angry: You don't give animal advocates enough credit, methinks. If certain actions aren't taken to protect our crops, we run the danger of not having enough food. Very few animal rights protesters(aside from the aforementioned peta type douchebags) actively try and prevent the populace from producing and consuming meat products. They realise these are very complicated issues, and that eating meat is very deeply ingrained into our culture. As the old adage goes, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. You can not ensure your survival without protecting the means to your survival. Besides, I'm pretty damn sure all animal righters use organic products whenever possible. There are definitely hypocrites and assholes, but don't assume they're the majority.

As for natural selection, I don't think it means what you think it means. Feel free to clarify.

Also this sort of pisses me off that sony would do something so incredibly dumb. Especially after Virginia tech and the attempts to blame violent videogames. Videogames don't need anymore bad rep.

Also I have a question. If by chance people did start piling up dead bodies for a release of a WW2 game would PETA care? Do they care about people? Or just dead goat carcasses?

The party was in Athens, and maybe that kind of thing is ok over there, but this would be a huge no-no in the US. While I think it's cool to target your advertising and marketing to the region, I think a company as large as Sony (especially having the PR issues they are) would be unwise to pull a marketing stunt such as this. I would think GoWII wouldn't need anything but a gameplay video to get people excited about it.

I don't understand what the point of this is...honestly parading around a corpse, still warm( I mean come on, don't act like all of you have balls big enough to even want to hang out with something like that) and asking people to eat Offal(aptly named) straight out of it is revolting. And it's not revolting because something died or it's for the sake of selling something...but more so because it's slightly savage in that gruesome manner that we don't have to be anymore. And honestly the past history of a culture is not something to just flaunt for the sake of dollars, especially when its some thing so far removed from your every day situations. And no I'm not saying that it never happens anyway, ie: the pig roasts and such...or fish heads left on the bodies, soups made from heads of animals, etc... but orgies in blood and to have something realistically dead there is a little perverse. So what if it was perverse back then, or we call it perverse now, it's just not something that is appropriately displayed by Sony. This wasn't an exhibit to teach people how it was, or to show where Greeks came from...it was a promotional situation to point out their product. And for me to stand around something dead and spilling out hot meat that I'm supposed to eat from in a very disturbing manner is just unappealing and slightly insulting to the history of the situation...but a lot of people have done a lot of fucked up things in the past, this doesn't mean we should mimic it. Why is it that just because they did hold orgies and have vomitoriums to gorge and re-gorge, and giant festivals based on death and deities...btw gods? give me a break. The fact that anyone anywhere has died for a 'god' is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Homosexual pedophiles, inter species love, decadence and over indulgence, rediculous policies, malicious behaviour, pig headed leaders, over zealous conquesting...the list goes on and on. The funny part of this is that it seems they didn't bother to showcase all the wonderful things the Greeks were able to accomplish in their past. What a shame they had to Jerry Springer it up once again...and that is exactly why it is offensive...it's so low brow and silly. And just because you all have a hard-on for these situations of being the biggest or the baddest or the coolest(though I don't see how showcasing a corpse makes you awesome), or even the type to stand up against the social norm, and support those that 'push the envelope' when all they really did was jerk off in your face...and you licked every last drop up. Somewhat like the trend that booth-babes included into E3...why were they there? To accent the great time and effort put into the entertainment they are SELLING you? Yeah sure...except it is an odd and uncomfortable situation when this super-hot woman has to cater to a bunch of knobs who would never have the chance to speak with them otherwise. Don't get me wrong, I like hot women too...most guys do haha But honestly stop trying to defend this with "Oh but it shows the history of a beautiful culture and blah blah blah" Go fuck yourself with that...Honestly, you ask a Grecian what it is that made them proud of their culture and history. Orgies in blood, sex with horses, boy fucking, toppless whores, crazy heads of state, and animal slaughter will not be things of pride. So please...before you even try to defend the idea that this is somehow a brilliant display of Greek culture, go sit with a corpse, eat something from its warm stomach and then smear the rest of it all over a bunch of hot women that will be screaming for help because this idiot that has jumped on them is as savage and barbaric as it is to praise people to re-enact anything along these lines.

There's a difference between hunting and eating and promotional materials for a fucking video game...

By the way, does anyone know what gender was the goat? Cause (ahem) it's a bit difficult to discuss in Russian, as there are two separate words for male and female goat.
