Sony says third parties are abandoning the Wii photo

Sony's Rob Dyer has been saying a lot of things lately. The publisher relations VP has been sharing some controversial opinions in a recent interview, and one of those opinions regards the very touchy subject of third party success on the Wii. According to the Sony man, publishers are realizing that their games aren't selling on Nintendo's waggle box, and have started to return to the Sony flock.

"What publishers have said is they're not going to spend the resources on Wii," gloats Dyer. "... When I walk into a publisher, I ask, 'Where are you guys pushing your resources?' In the past, it was 'look how hot the Wii is,' or 'look how hot the DS is,' and 'we should put resources there.' They did that and realised, 'You know what, third-party products just doesn't sell on that platform.'

"Now they're taking those resources, coming back to us and saying, 'Sony we're going to be able to provide you with that exclusive content,' or 'We're going to put more engineers on it and figure out to maximize the Blu-ray and get more out of PS3.' That's what we're seeing now."

Dyer adds that he doesn't even have to work hard to entice publishers away from the Wii anymore, and that "Unless they've got a particular franchise that's worked well on the Wii, you don't see a lot of innovative new IP coming out on that platform."

Even so, it's the Wii that's still selling a ludicrous amount of machines. Seems the general public doesn't much care about good games, but I think we all worked that out already.

The problem with Wii is that though its sold over 50, 60 million units (im just guessing here) the majority of those people aren't gamers and won't buy anything, or are barely even aware of anything that doesn't have 'Wii' in the title. Hell even Mario Galaxy didn't sell as well in comparison to New Super Mario Brothers 'Wii'.

Its never been truer than this gen- When developing for a Nintendo platform, your biggest competitor is Nintendo.

Sony really needs to stop boasting and this. All anyone needs to say is, how are cross platform games selling on 360 compared to ps3 and his tail should go between his legs and he should piddle on the spot right there.

Third party developers can abandon the Wii all they want because the third party developers are responsible for the huge majority of shovelware trash that's out there! They release their pathetic rubbish then complain that it doesn't sell well, so they leave the Wii. I'm sorry, but am I supposed to be saddened by this?

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play some "No More Heroes 2", one of the few 3rd-party Wii games that's actually worth playing.

Looking at all of the recent stories there's no doubt that it's true, although it does kind of make you question the professionalism of this publisher relations VP for just stating it outright.

So Sony's just ignoring all the studios that have had bad fiscal years for investing a large budget in HG games that haven't been selling? I mean, not to divert attention from developers also just not being able to crack the Wii demographic, but isn't Sony and MS's push to HD kind of why we don't have exclusives anymore.

I mean, there's a lot of games that went cross-platform when financial stakes were raised and right now we even see third party giants like EA stumbling.

Granted, you're never going to get Sony execs to own up to anything, but c'mon. If Sony hasn't had a role in the death of exclusivity, they wouldn't be scrambling to abuse those gimmicky pre-order exclusives to gain attention now.

If anything, I see some of these developers "leaving" Nintendo just to spread shovelware to the new wagglers on the block, little else.

I don't know about you guys, but I know about 10 people with Wii's, of those 10, only 1 of them is a gamer, the rest are for the kids to play Wiisports on or for Mummy to play WiiFit for a week then stop bothering.

My sister plays the odd bit of guitar hero, perhaps 2 songs a year and dad has played Rappala fishing once or twice.

The one "gamer" i know with a Wii hasn't touched it since he got his PS3.

It certainly doesn't look good for 3rd party games, specially when even the nintendo games are being neglected by the userbase.

@Jaycobo - There was a whole article and obligatory fanboy argument about how cross platform games are selling on PS3 vs 360 yesterday. Turns out generic FPS games have a higher % uptake on the 360, but interesting varied titles have a better % uptake on the PS3. Go figure.

It's pretty ballsy to talk smack about a company that's trouncing you in 2 different markets. A small return to success, and Sony execs just cannot help strutting around like they own the joint. What I find funny is that it's actually a pretty huge advantage for us gamers, to desperately have Sony and Microsoft clawing for second place. They're trying pretty hard to please/woo us, and that's the way it should be.

Only a month until GoW3, awwwww yeah!

Fuck those publishers. The chances are they're releasing crap on it anyway because those guys are the only ones that ever complain (excluding CAPCOM because they as a company weren't complaining but just one guy on a podcast or something). All I can hear from these bastards is:

"Our games aren't selling! This is not because of poor adverting, lack of any interesting mainstream or quality games or years of shovelware but because Wii games do not sell!"

Yeah a lot of Wii games don't sell as well as they should but a lot of PS3 and Xbox 360 games don't either. It happens but they can ignore it on the other consoles because they can magically grow a brain when it comes to them.

Out of the 300 Total PSN3/Wii TItles i own. Only 37 are for the Wii.
(( They are the only decent games for the Wii. Almost all 1st Party Games. & Either BoomBlox, DeBlob, & some of the Exclusive M Rated Games... MadWorld, Manhunt 2, Wii REMakes, Umbrella Chronicles, & Darkside Chronicles. ))

I really want Luigi's Mansion Wii though... I'm a sucker for that GCube game.

Well, thank god we have you and your little circle of friends to tell us how the video game industry is doing. Where would be without the knowledge that your friends don't buy any Wii games. Forget about the fact that there's 76 different million sellers on the Wii and 53 of them are from 3rd Party's.

Nope that doesn't matter, because your 10 friends just bought a Wii and only play Wii Sports on it. So the rest of the world must be exactly the same as your 10 friends. Those 10 people out of over 67 million Wii owners can't be wrong, right?

As for Sony, I don't see 3rd Party's rushing to your systems either! "you don't see a lot of innovative new IP coming out on that platform." Well that's a matter of his wrong opinion. I don't care if you love, or hate the Wii, but you have to admit that tons of new IP have come from the Wii and now its just getting ported to the HD systems. Is getting Wii hand-me-downs really something to brag about Sony?

I agree with jaycobo. Also with SC when he say generic shooters do better on the 360. The reason for that is cause more people have it and now a days every one likes shooters. The 360 is filled with followers I'm not saying that to bash the 360 but its the truth. If you have ever seen the movie The Wave you can see what I'm talking about. People are easily brainwashed and minipulitive.

To those who instantly see my name and chant "fanboy fanboy fanboy troll troll troll" without reading my comment - Fuck you very much.

To those who read my comment and can understand what i'm saying - Thank you very much.

Seriously, do you guys REALLY think that all those millions of Wii owners know when the next 3rd part game is coming out? Or have even the slightest bit of interest in it? I think the 3rd party games sales vs Wii console sales figures answer that one.

My parents want the Wii (that i gave them) back soon, because Mum wants another fitness game that she'll play with for an evening then never touch again. Not for Monster Hunter Tri, or any other 3rd party title. The only games they've ever bought for it that aren't WiiSports or WiiFit, are the one's I bought for them for birthdays and shit, and they NEVER get played, EVER.

That's just my experience of the Wii, however I've got it at my house right now and I must say after trawling for weeks trying to find a half decent game to play on it, i've found No More Heroes and that truely is a diamond in the shovelware rough. Loving it.

Again though, what percentage of Wii owners do you think even know that awesome game exists?

I'd put my money on less than 10%.

I love how he said that 3rd parties used to focus all their resources on the Wii and DS, and now they're jumping ship to the PS3 and... Oh, wait. There's no "and".

They STILL aren't making games for the PSP.

I only complain because my PSP has been sitting next to my bed, unused, for far too long. And now that I picked up the iPhone version of Chinatown Wars for only $7, I have even less of a reason to recharge that battery...

But hey, he's right about the PS3. I rarely play my Wii, and if 3rd parties want to focus on the PS3 (and undoubtedly the 360), that's all the better for me.

I have to say that that top 10 comment he made is pretty ballsy considering a game can sell over 2 million on either the Wii or DS and not even come close to the top 10. In what world does that make the game a flop? Though I do agree that the Wii owner base is fairly fickle and it's tough to figure out what will actually sell on that platform.

Unless GoldenGamerXero is your ghost account!

Also, as someone who likes you Sexy and does read your post, you could make the same argument for PS3 and 360. There are a ton of people who only play Halo and Killzone and never touch their PS3s. In fact I know people who bought a PS3 strictly for Blu-Ray and don't play games.

Just because there may be more gamers on the Wii who aren't cautious of some of the better Wii releases doesn't mean the percentage is higher than those who act the same towards their PS3 and 360.

The smash bros community loves it, and melee was actually more broken than Brawl ( I still hate you Meta Knight ), but the point is about the core use of the Wii.

The fighting game crowd and even the Mario Kart players are into it. Tatsunoko may not be selling like crazy in here, but it's the successor of MvsC2, do you really think that the core players won't embrace it?

@Xyliac - I've been seriously considering it. GoldenGamer is not me! But i am {--} this close to making an alter.

Seriously though, I'm not ratting on the Wii, it's fucking good and what it does. Never has a games console bridged the gap between toy and games console so well, not since the introduction of consoles when they were all considered toys.

And fucking props to Nintendo for doing that, they single handedly CREATED a market from nothing, from houswifes and well, just about ANYONE.

BUT - Despite the few hardcore players playing mario Brawl or Kart, and the rest of us who love to rip through the latest Zelda, for every one of us there must be another 10 Wii's sat in living rooms, having not been touched since WiiFit got boring about a year ago, or since the kids got bored of WiiSports.

All i'm saying is that in my personal experience, it's a case of 10 out of 10 Wii's are now neglected, that's sad, but in my personal experience it's true.

Posting what I wrote on another website:

Everyone acts like the Wii and the HD consoles were given fair, even shares of initial third party support, therefore "proving" the Wii can't support hardcore content when the same content that sells on the 360 or PS3 bombs on the Wii. But that's completely untrue.

The "hardcore" situation would have been much different had the Wii had Resident Evil 5 or Metal Gear Solid 4, had it had Mass Effect or Modern Warfare, had it had Assassin's Creed or Final Fantasy XIII.

Similarly, the 360 or PS3 wouldn't have done so well had they been forced to rely on Deadly Creatures or MadWorld, Mushroom Men or Umbrella Chronicles, The Conduit or Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.

It's not a fair comparison at all. All of these negative developer perceptions are built on a foundation of misconceptions and faulty logic.

To be fair, I think we've passed the point of no return in terms of image, but that doesn't mean developers can continue to blame the Wii or Nintendo. Rather than saying, "Nintendo and the Wii do not support us or our content", they should say, "We let our biases and ignorance cloud our initial judgment, so we now best develop on the two HD consoles and forget the vast opportunities we missed had we merged our sophisticated content with a platform that had the widest potential audience".

No console is intrinsically "hardcore", it's whatever console developers collectively decide to support with their best content. The Wii would have been capable of supporting hardcore content had the developers been there from the start.

(And granted, while Nintendo shouldn't have to and isn't obligated, it would have been in their best interest to have nipped this in the bud from the beginning, doing whatever they can to start that perpetual engine of "hardcore" content with third parties.)

Well, I can't help but wonder how many games the 3rd parties are relying on are the mini-game fests that we've been stuck with for a while. Have we gotten to the point where they've finally started losing interest? Maybe the publishers would serve better to market the games, and try doing something different for a change.

Natal and Arc are opening the gates for the so called "casual audience" and shovelware games as well, but nobody still didn't realized that coming

What about Greenberg and Major Nelson's arrogrant attitudes for MS? Why are people so mum about MS attitudes but lash out at Sony's the first chance they get.

Publishers complained about how their 3rd party games dont sell on the Wii long before Sony made this comment. This is why you dont see games like AC 2, Batman, GTA, and many more on the Wii. The Wii does sell the most hardware and software thanks to Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario, and many other casual games such as Carnival Games or Wii Play.
