Sony says the same things about the PS3 that Sega did the Saturn photo

And that doesn't bode well, does it?

I hate to draw the comparison, mostly because the Sega Saturn is my favorite game system of all time. But the parallels between what Sony's Kaz Hirai is saying lately compared to what Sega said about the Saturn back in the day is kind of scary.

This comes from a Sega Saturn white paper:

...growth won't be possible on competing systems that offer a simpler architecture. It may be easier in some ways for developers to create programs for the competition because there's less to learn and work with from a technology standpoint -- but that means that developers are much more likely to run up against the limits of the system in a short span of time.

And this from Kaz Hirai's mouth:

"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?"

At insertcredit, they point out that while that logic is flawed, following it could mean that the PS3 would end up being my favorite system. Nah. I don't see that.

Here's one parallel I do see: both Sega then and Sony now are full of sh*t. Another parallel? Both systems cost too much right out of the gate.

Your fondness of the Saturn was for all the great games for it. The PS3's lineup as of today isn't that great but we're about to get more great stuff in the future so its still uncertain whether the PS3 will end up like the saturn.

What Im really wanting to know is where is Sony's answer to Segata Sanshiro.

He didn't say it was the best system. He said it was his favorite. Read.

I thought the Saturn was an absolutely amazing system, but only if you lived in Japan. It was actually kind of a horrible system in the U.S., because we didn't get even half the awesome stuff that was available. The only reason I know about the Japanese Saturn goodness is because my friend imported one a while back, otherwise I wouldn't have known about any of it.

Also, didn't the Saturn fail as badly as it did here because of the PS1? Oh, the irony!

They both have a lot of fighting games. 360 has all the same fighting games as PS3, but 360 doesn't count because no one wants to play fighting games with that shitty dpad.

The only game worth playing on Saturn was Guardian Heroes. The only game worth playing on PS3 is um..

@mrplow8 real fighters use arcade sticks. the dual shock 3 d-pad is atrocious for fighters.

I, for one, think the PS3 and Sony are in pretty big trouble unless they can somehow get their act together and turn it around. The economy has a lot to do with the reason why.

It's sad that he seriously believes that making your system 'harder to work with' is better cuz it keeps you busy for a longer time with one game.

I can understand this. But the Saturn failed because Sega was already in the shithole moneywise. Sony is NOT in the shit hole.

problem here is that blu-ray is brand new. Developers didn't have nowhere near enough time to fool around and test with it...hence why most are straying away from it. Plus it costs a lot. It's obvious that if you don't have money to start your first big game project, the PS3 isn't the way to look.

and then look at all the games on the PS3. Sure most are for the "hardcore" or "non casual" crowd, but that strays the possible casual "I want more than just a blu ray player" crowd. Plus the PS3's high price when it first dropped...

so yea. It's hard to compare these 2 systems when they're phailing for different reasons in the end.

If you wanna go further in depth, Sony said the same thing about the PS2 which, at the time, was considerably harder to program for that the PC-like architecture of the XBox.

Sony probably should have just found a good way to use existing technology to make a really pimped out gaming rig instead of developing the Cell and Blu Ray and putting all of those expensive technologies in one system.

The PS3 is pretty powerful... it's like, getting the newest DirectX when most games don't even utilize its potential.

Bad move on Sony's part? Yes and no. They have the most powerful system out there, so if any developer decides to put its effort into it, the absolute best games will be on the PS3 (Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, etc.,)

Big problem with Sony is that when MS cut the Xbox 360 prices by $100 bucks, Sony packaged Uncharted with a 160gb PS3 and upped their price by $100. Sony needs to release the 80gb (or the 40gb model) for 299$ then they can really compete.

Which console has an arcade stick on its default controller? The answer is none of them. If you want to play with an arcade stick you have to buy it no matter which console you own. But if you want to play with a dpad, the PS3 wins because it has a good dpad on the default controller that comes with the console.

When the PS2 was king this flew. When futuristic HD games are now being backported to yesterday's graphic standard because the general public apparently doesn't give a shit they have a problem.

I love my PS3. I think it's a beautiful thing. Moar games and less talk plz.

I see sony and sega having a lot of similarities, though not with the saturn- I see a lot of the same problems associated with the dreamcast and the psp with the gamegear- it seems to do more with licensing and support than with the dev platforms- some devs will say that ps3 is horrible and some will say that that it is no problem- just depends on their background. The big thing is that MS (like sony and nintendo in the 90's) have been sucking up 3rd party contracts and leaving sony with some 3rd party games, but mainly relying on their own IP's (resistance, LBP etc.) for their power punches. I mean, really the 360 doesn't have much in the way of an MS library- pretty much it is fable, halo is even exclusive 3rd party. I was dating a girl that worked @ sega when it went down and heard the talk from the meetings and when I was in the office (since I was teaching at the time and would go to lunch in the sega offices with my ex GF) and it really does sound a lot like the talk that you hear nowadays with the PS3- personally I want to see the PS3 survive, not just because I own a PS3 and not a 360, but because I don't want to have to own an xbox, if I do get one at some point I want it to be because there is something I actually like about it

I still think they are making good points. For example, I played the Killzone 2 beta tonight, and I've never seen a better looking game, ever. Good things take time, and the 360 is easy to dev for, and easy for PC devs to port 360 games from pc. Easy is quicker, cheaper, etc, but hard will lead to new possibilities and might be more rewarding.

The biggest problem is that whilst this is technically true, that PS3 games will look better and better long after the 360's development is perfected, it's going to leave Sony in a very weak position in the meantime. With it's cheaper development costs, larger install base, and decently high attach rate, even a supposedly completely tapped out 360 will be a more lucrative platform for developers than the PS3 potential, and so only a small first party exclusives are ever likely to see the extra power being used, much like with SEGA's titles on the Saturn.

Untapped potential is not necessarily a good thing, as any original Xbox owner can testify.

To be fair, the Saturn was a mess because SEGA didn't think 3D was going to be the next big thing. Their whole paradigm was wrong.

The PS3, on the other hand, just costs too much. It's a 3DO, not a Saturn.

I'm still not buying a 360. You guys can bitch about the PS3's price all you want, but when the competitions "cheaper" alternative has the reputation of being in the repair shop more time than actually playing games I say that argument is absolute bullshit.

I really don't understand the popularity of the Xbox 360 at all. Most of my friends have them, and very few have PS3s. However, I have yet to see that game that wows me to the point I have to buy one. Gears 2 looked ok, didn't really pull me in. Halo to me has always seemed like just another shooter. 360 has most of the JRPGs so far this gen (which is what I normally enjoy playing), but those have been subpar. To me it seems like a system with alot of mediocre games.

My PS3 was bought as a MGS4 bundle, which was the system seller for me. If it wasn't that game, it would have been Valkyria Chronicles. Little Big Planet is a blast. Heavy Rain later this year would have probably been a system seller for me also.

Only thing interesting I see on 360 in the future is the new Star Ocean, which may make me buy the 360, but looking forward I may buy just the arcade only for that one game then let it rot/sell it/something.

Did people forget how hard the PS2 was to develop for too? I think it did just fine.

Also, the PS3 is selling at a better rate WW than the 360 since launch, and that's with 2 cheaper competing consoles. It is also sellling at over 2x the rate of the PS1 since launch, which went on to sell over 100mil worldwide.

Considering all chips stacked against Sony (media bias mainly), I believe their 10 year lifecycle for each console will end up winning out in the end.

The no games thing should certainly be put to death.

@Baldar538

I own both, but the 360 has Xbots, who will defend their system without fail. See, Sony fans have been around the bend and seen some disappointment; Xbots are getting to that point. I mean, how many Red Ring reports and disc scratching systems do you have to have before people realize Microsoft doesn't give a shit about you?

I will admit, I love my 360. However, my main problem with Microsoft is that they completely abandoned my Original Xbox. 100% abandoned. No games, no updates, no more systems sold in case mine breaks.

Sony is going to support the PS3 for 9 years. The PS2 is STILL(!) coming out with NEW games! I will support that! All Sony needs to do is reduce the price tag, market to the casual gamer, and bam; they can have great success again. What's happening to Sony is a shame. The whole corporation shouldn't be blamed for a few executive's decision to not have a price cut.
