Sony says no holiday price cuts coming photo

Thinking maybe it's time for you to finally give in and buy a PS3, if only they'd reduce the price just a little bit more? This isn't going to be your year, if Patrick Seybold, director of corporate communications at SCEA, is to be believed (I have a feeling he's likely pretty reliable when it comes to such things.) In a recent interview with Edge, Seybold commented that there are no plans for any price cuts this Holiday season.

"In my opinion," he added, "we have the best line up of any PlayStation generation going into this holiday and consumers will be very receptive to it."

I do think that Sony has a major hit on their hands with LittleBigPlanet, as the beta has been one of the most delightful gaming experiences I've had all year. PS3 was catching up to the Xbox 360 in sales, but now that they have slashed the price of their console, the gap could possibly widen again.

Seybold also mentioned Resistance 2, SOCOM and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift as being among their games that they feel will draw people to purchase the PS3. Are any of these titles (LittleBigPlanet included) system sellers for you?

LBP would be a system seller for me if I already didn't have a PS3. The rest in that list, as far as system sellers go, wouldn't sway me to get a PS3.

I think MotorStorm is a hell of a fun game but not a system seller, especially with all of the great games coming out for 360 this season.

Is this guy for real? The best line up for any playstation generation....

He can't be serious.

Don't tell me you agree with him Colette. I know you've been hypnotized by Little Big Planet (what I like to call a tech demo and creative outlet for wannabe game designers).

None of the games listed interest me, it's sad really...

I was a sony fanboy once, but now...I don't know anymore.

BTW, i'm not saying Little Big Planet is bad, but in all honesty, do you see yourself having the patience and the ability to make your own level and games. I've seen some amazing stuff done by very creative people, but I just don't have the creativity and skill to do that crazy stuff, I'd get bored with it very quickly.

Put it this way: Microsoft has made a price cut, and has a strong holiday lineup, Sony has not made a price cut, and has a strong holiday lineup. Toss in the fact that PS3 costs more than 360, and that Sony's best game, LBP, is going to be difficult to explain (and thereby, sell) properly in short ad segments, and you have a recipe for 360 selling more than the PS3 this holiday.

LBP is a system seller to a "gamer" joe guido is still waiting for his God of War before purchasing a PS3. the game will be huge, but its not going to push hardware

and aside from LBP that line up is pathetic. I doubt resistance is the next big leap in FPS Motorstorm is no GT and Socom is a relic of a franchise

I might be swayed by LBP if I didn't already have a PS3.
But no, the rest of those are hardly system sellers.

@Rainbowblack:

I dunno, man... 60 player deathmatch is pretty cool.

Resistance 2 might be on my list. Little Big Planet and Fallout 3 are for sure purchases for me, as well as Rock Band 2. The new Spider-Man game has me interested, but I'll wait to see how that's received first.

To put it simply, No.

I honestly couldn't care less about those games, and although I can see myself having a couple hours of fun with LBP, I just don't see it's lasting appeal.

I doubt that LBP will appeal the casual gamers, and - aside from LBP - I doubt that any of the other titles mentioned will be system-sellers.

The levels people have made so far are less impressive than what I expected...and my expectations were about as low as I thought they go. The calculator and tetris-thing took the cake. Seconded by all the nods to other games out there like God of War and Shadow of the Collosus. Look, it's a dragon. Dragons are in games!

Sony REALLY does not want me to buy a PS3. That's what I'm taking away from all this.

@natural..

the beta has been out for what like a week and half or two weeks? just imagine the levels in the coming months and into the next year what people can do with a full game (and ive seen the full game and it is goddamn huge, the amount of things to be able to use)so this is absolutely nothing now compared to whats going to come starting next week.

If my Xbox red rings again. I'll make sure I can prevent more Xbox sales, otherwise I'm happy with the PS3 and 360 and only system seller in there is Socom.

Resistance 2? Quite possibly.

LBP? FUCK YES.

Also Killzone 2 isn't too far away...

LBP may not be a system seller, it may sell sh*tloads to existing userbase, tho. LBP 2, however, will shift a helluva consoles (if it won't be multiplat, depending on who owns the franchise), because it will then be an established name..

I see LBP as a system seller for sure.

I have a friend who after showing LBP videos to is now saving up for a PS3, so I'm sure there are others out there. I also see little kids crying to their paretns that they want the Sackboy game so they will be able to set their PS3 next to their Wii Fit.

@brainderailment

I agree there are many PS3 games (some exclusives some not) that are well worth the purchase.

I honestly don't think that Little Big Planet is going to be that huge outside of the gaming community that already owns PS3s. Aside from the news I get here I pretty much NEVER hear anything about Little Big Planet. If the game is expected to be such an incredible system seller it needs to be brought to the attention of a much more diverse audience and I don't see that at all. I predict that Sony will continue to fail hard even after LBP drops, and it pains me to say that too.

Sony and MS have completely different business plans. MS can afford to take a big hit on the hardware since they'll make it up through Live and DLC. Sony on the other hand really only has its hardware and software to make money off of. It will hurt Sony more than they like, mainly because their lineup hasn't differentiated itself enough from the 360's. Plus it sounds like MS will be pumping a lot of money into their holiday marketing campaign.

The one thing I never see mentioned a whole lot is that when deciding to buy a PS3 or XBox 360 is the fact that you need to have an HDTV. I don't watch HD TV and all of the streamed online content I watch isn't HD either. So, I don't mind a $399 console price but I don't want to buy a $800 dollar HDTV just to play it on or buy a $400 PC monitor with HDMI. That to me is the deal breaker.

@ nefas

..Uhh...you don't NEED a HD TV for either consoles. I played my PS3 for a year on a SD 27INCH CRT TV and my friend still plays on his 21 inch SD CRT RCA.

...on topic though, The titles they have out are total fun, I don't know if they are of caliber though to sell machines especially at currently price point coupled with the state of the economy. Just have to wait and see I guess.

@byrc - Nah, Im no Sony fangirl. I do think LBP is pretty special, but the other games are definitely not interesting for me personally. If I didn't own a PS3 already I wouldn't buy one for these games. Still, I have hope that the PS3 still can come into its own eventually ... I just think it needs an extensive library like PS2 does to have a chance at that.

I don't think they've got the best lineup of any Playstation generation, but I wasn't expecting them to drop the price again any time soon.

@Mattchewie

Why bother playing on a SDTV when one of the major selling points is the HD graphics. Trying to deal with text heavy games and PSN on SD is just too much eye-strain-o-vision for me. It is also a major loss in value. Its a bit extreme but to me its like paying 399 for a PS2 in 2008. I can play a PS3 on my SDTV but that doesn't mean I want to.

My love for games is in conflict with my wallet.

The wallet always wins.

Therefore, $400 is too much for a PS3.

Sorry, LBP and Motorstorm!

Give in to the HDs
You must have them
You are feeling sleepy

Seriously, HD is completely amazing compared to SD and the prices are really coming down. I bet with the economy as tight as it is, retailers will have some great deals on HDtvs this holiday seasons.(fingers crossed)

I am actually in the market for a new game console. I'm trying to decide between buying a PS3 or another 360. PS3 has a couple of Pro's over 360's cons but what the PS3 doesnt have is games, and none of these titles are appealing to me.
PixelJunky's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/09/2008 07:33

@chronicus_prime......the PS3 doesn't have games is a myth or you just don't like to game. The only games the 360 is getting this holiday are Gears 2, Fable, and Banjo. The PS3 has Uncharted, MGS4, Wipeout HD, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, LittleBigPlanet, Bioshock, and in early 2009 Killzone 2 and infamous.

Otherwise both systems will have all the other games in common, many of which the PS3 is the lead platform. Really you can't go wrong with either, but when you look at what each machine offers IN the box. The PS3 is easily worth the price.

Not sure why you'd want 2 - 360's instead of one of each system.....other than being a blind fanboy and not a real gamer.
