If you're lying on your couch at home gazing at the window daydreaming about how the Playstation 4 will play your games, auto-prepare breakfast and feed the cat, I have some bad news for you: it isn't on the way anytime soon.
Speaking with T3 magazine, Sony offered some words in regards to the lifespan of the PS3:
"PS3 won't celebrate its second birthday in the UK until March of this year, and we've said all along that the life-cycle for this generation of hardware will be longer than previous models. PS2 was still going strong after eight years, and with the power the Cell processor provides, not to mention the fact that PS3 is inherently future-proof, we see the PS3 sales curve far outlasting that of PS2."
I have great hope for a statement like this -- I still adore my PS2, and I can see myself feeling the same way about the PS3 as the library expands and I get more of the types of games I want to play. I could care less about the next version of the Playstation ... for now. What do you think?

Wow, did they really say that? Probably just a reference to the blu-rays, but yeah...
That being said, I do hope they are right, as the last thing we need is any new consoles, when there are so few good games for the current ones.
For the PS2, that game was GTA3. Saw it at a friend's house the day it came out...had a PS2, GTA3, and Madden '01 a few days later.
7 years later, my PS2 library consists of 105 games...and that number is still growing: hunting for Ar Tonelico 1 and getting SMT Devil Summoner 2 in May. And I almost grabbed 2 more games during lunch today, but opted for Izuna 1 and 2.
Going on a little over 2 years after the PS3 was released here in the US, still no desire to pick one up. Happy with my 360 and Wii for the time being.
Also, I'm one of those people who are bummed with the lack of BC. But again...I have 105 games. If I were to get a PS3, it would be nice to know that if anything happened to my PS2, I still have my PS3 and I don't have to replace ol' #2.
That statement is especially bizarre coming from someone who claims to own 105 PS2 games. If you're able to find over a hundred games worth owning for the PS2, surely you can find at least a handful of games that interest you on the PS3.
Don't make me get out the fuckin list.
I read that as

darn! I was so looking forward to Cooking Mama:Housepetz edition.
agreed! i never understood that either. i love my ps3 and i see it more as a developers preferred system in the next few years due to the fact that homebrew and/or backups haven't been released for it (and shit like the L4D mods/hacks won't happen as easily on a non-hacked/exploited console)
developers want to make money you'd think and on the x360 its just TOO easy to pirate games. hell, i passed on a few modded xbox's already because it doesn't have bluray and for me that is key to my HD experience.
When it comes to games that are multiplatform, thats not a big reason to say buying a PS3 is the better choice. Why would someone want to pay more money for such a game, have to go through the hassle of a mandatory install and have a game that often looks a bit or a lot worse than its 360 brethren?
So, for less money, you can get any games that happen to be multiplatform. You have to abandon MGS4 (IMO the only game the PS3 has at this point worth owning. Which will change when they get Heavy Rain) and seeing as we are talking of the present and future, lets extend the 360 that same courtesy.
Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect Trilogy, Splinter Cell, Alan Wake, Gears Trilogy, Halo 3, ODST and Halo Wars, Star Ocean.
But throwing names out there isn't going to do anything. Either you knew the games and they mattered or you likely don't care about what titles are coming to the 360.
I will say though, I am happy that L.A Noire is coming to the 360 too. MGS4, Heavy Rain and L.A Noire being three PS3 exclusives would have been something to make me seriously consider getting a PS3. Who knows? Maybe with the passing of time I will find more exclusives on the PS3 I'll give a damn about and will make the plunge.

Ah, here's the thing about x360 "exclusive" games....most of them aren't really exclusive. Bioshock is now on PS3, and has been on PC for a long time, one of the x360s biggest games worth owning for a while. Mass effect, on PC. Halo series, PC (not 3 yet, but it is just a matter of time). Gears of War series, PC. Etc. Why own a x360 when you can play all of the games maxed on a PC that doesn't cost much more than the x360 with harddrive? PC games are cheaper as well, so you'd be saving money in the long run easily.
There are plenty of games worth owning on the PS3 at this time already, way more exclusives than the x360 has, because you see...the PS3 exclusives are ....actually exclusive to the PS3...and not on PC. MGS4 as you mentioned, Uncharted, and Uncharted 2 coming soon (best new game this generation), LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm series (best racing series released on any system IMO), Heavenly Sword (short, but incredible), Killzone 2, Resistance 1 and 2, Heavy Rain, Disgaea 3, Folklore, God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, Ratchet and Clank series, Valkyria Chronicles, Warhawk, and more. These are games only on the PS3.
To be honest, PS3 is cheaper in the long run no matter which way you throw it. Even if you spend $400 on Sony's 80GB model vs. $200 for X360 with no Hard drive, the X360 will quickly add up in cost when purchasing an over-priced hard drive, paying for online, adding wireless, no bluray, so you'd need a separate player if you want to watch HD movies, etc. I'm proud be keeping away from the x360, I don't need a console that is guaranteed to break again and again for no reason, other than poor design. I don't need a system with no good exclusive games, and all these so called exclusives I happily play on my computer.
I have nothing against Microsoft, I love Windows XP, Vista, and 7 is already shaping up very nicely...but they need to get out of the console business now. They have no clue what they are doing with console hardware. I don't get it though, the original Xbox didn't seem to have any hardware problems (just no games worth owning), but the x360 is the biggest failure of any console in history (design wise). Where did they go wrong? Please step aside Microsoft...we can easily buy all your decent games on PC. Thanks. Stick to what you know...Operating Systems.
